Sunday Reflections…

Well I got up this morning to a still cold, mostly white, snow covered world. But today the wind is out of the south and the temperature is getting up above 50 today, so I expect to see some grass and bare areas before the day is out. It’s been over a week of being mainly trapped in the house, below zero wind chills, frozen pipes, BAD roads, Storm damage, etc… I feel ready for Spring…

This has been our reality for well over a week! But today we will get up to around 55 degrees! 🔥

In another way, its been so beautiful… We have gotten to spend some quality time together and I will miss that part of being trapped inside together 😊 I haven’t watched the news or read the paper or even payed attention to the outside world…

But, the snow is melting… This week is warming up, we will be in the 60’s by midweek! Which will bring a whole different experience that we may not be ready for either…

When all this ice melts and we warm into the 60’s + the Skeeters will be back around… You know what that means… Spring is Coming!

“There’s a patch of old snow in a corner
That I should have guessed
Was a blow-away paper the rain
Had brought to rest.

It is speckled with grime as if
Small print overspread it,
The news of a day I’ve forgotten —
If I ever read it.”

~ Robert Frost

Have a Blessed Sunday! 🙏🏻

Winter Beauty From MY Window…

We don’t get “BIG” snow like this very often… Thank God! So many aren’t prepared for it! Power goes out, heat goes out, no water, etc, etc… I myself even lost one of my main greenhouses from the sheer weight of the snow… But, today I’m gonna try to focus on the Beauty of it all. Much of it from my window 😊 Its COLD out there 🥶

This doesn’t really say “Way down South in Dixie”… But this is from a window in my house today…
My front yard… Beautiful! But, ‘Come on man’ 🥶
From my front porch, looking down the hill past the Pond into the holler… Again, how Gorgeous! But just try walking down there! Slip and slide 🛷
From an upper window after dark. It’s hard for me not to just stay out there all day like a kid.. it’s just so beautiful! But it’s so cold!🥶

I just thought I would share a few pictures of what I think is a Beautiful, Winter Landscape. The “Entertainment of the day” the last few days has been sitting in front of the French doors and watching the birds eat the seed we’ve been throwing out. Even our dogs are glued to the ‘Theater of Life’ that’s just on the other side of the glass.

Enjoy your snow day! And stay warm 🔥

PS: Spring is Coming!

Winter Waterfall Beauty | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I just LOVE my Waterfalls and my Pond! And I get to enjoy the beauty year round! All 4 seasons bring something special to my life. This bitter cold and snow is rough, in one way, but in another it brings extreme beauty to my door! It’s not safe to be out on the roads right now, but here in my Landscape… It’s all good 😊

I hope this morning finds you safe and warm! It’s very cold 🥶 out there… But seeing my ‘Winter Wonderland’ somehow makes it better… More beautiful. More bearable… And I know that this is really the foothills of the coming Spring! And I am ready!

Be careful out there!

Snow…? NO, Wait – ICE Day…

A good old fashioned ICE Storm ⛈ is what we woke to this morning! Not as bad as predicted, thank the Lord! We’ve had to endure weeks with no heat before from bad ones and let me tell you, it’s not fun! But the stone walks all are slick with ice and impassable, So is my driveway! Therefore, we were forced to close today… So, we got that goin for us 😊!

A day off in the Winter can be a fun day! Especially with a pretty snow ⛄️ BUT, Ice just shuts you down…

Snow days are always fun days! Snowballs, snowmen, sledding, 4 wheeling, snow cream, ahhhhh the good old Snow Daze!!! But an Ice Day? What do you do for fun on an Ice Day? In my humble opinion, Ice Days are the crappiest of all days off due to weather…

BUT, there are some beautiful views and pictures to be had…

A little damage, but not too bad.

I just thought of the perfect Ice Day activity…. A Big, Fat, NAP! 😴 💤

Y’all have fun 😊

ICE STORM –

“Icy rain comes with a crinkling sound
Like little silver coins falling on grounds
Tree limbs covered with translucent ice
Channels of pure white gleaming calm.

In icy storm proud oak to earth stumbles
Aromatic bushes are much more humble
Intact is the grace of their ice laden veins
Bowing in reverence for mighty Rummager.

In opaque sunlight plump scarlet berries
And metallic ice enhanced the olive curves
Of bent bushes like crimson cheeks and skin
Luminous adorn a maiden’s clandestine arc.

Power outage, phone and Internet gone
Forget about connecting to world for fun
Ponder upon slavery of new convenience
And think of sustaining with bare essentials.

but who would remember the deadly storm
In morning light the heart merrily romps
Transient is the wondrous beauty of icicles
Pain and glee of nature such as don’t last.”

If You Don’t Like The Weather, Just Wait a Few Minutes…

It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring- And that old tune is right on the money today! WOW what a storm! 40+ mile an hour winds too… But the kicker comes tonight!

This is so true! The weather is changing today! Thunder storms and high winds with temps in the upper 50’s will change over the next several hours to an ice and snow mix with temps in the LOW 20’s! 😲

I think one of the most important things to remember is our pets. The temps are gonna go LOW & will stay that way for several nights – and they will need a little shelter.

We’re gonna be cold for the next couple weeks. Don’t forget – If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.

Stay warm folks! And have a Great Weekend!

Beautiful, Early Snow ❄️ A Blessing For The Gardener | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Our first snow ❄️ came a bit early this year! Pre-Thanksgiving snow is a rareity in the South for sure 😊 But don’t let it get you down! I try to enjoy the blessings and the opportunity’s as they come!

A snowy landscape is Beautiful! Get out and😊

Snow is very beneficial for our gardens too!  Just a few things that snow does –

  •  Snow brings nutrients to the soil! (Free Fertilizer!) – Nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur & more are captured in the snowfall and are then slowly released into the soil as it melts.
  • Snow ❄️ is a wonderful blanket that insulates and protects the soil and many plants from freezing damage.
  • Snow helps to recharge our groundwater!
  • Snow gives US a break from the garden too😇

Snowy weather brings the birds to your feeders! They come all day to eat, to get a drink and even bathe. I LOVE to photograph birds in our landscape and at our feeders. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Enjoy this beautiful day while it lasts! We got an early taste of winter and for many of us, a day off 😉
Happy Pondering!

Snow Daze are FUN Days!
January 17, 2018, 3:29 pm
Filed under: Articles, General Blog Entry's, Outdoor Lifestyles | Tags: ,

You know, we don’t many bonafied snow days around here… When we do – IT’S ON! 4-wheelers, tractors and sleds, old car hoods to slide down a hill on, snow men, snow balls, snow cream, etc. etc… 🙂 We were just warming up for a minute this morning getting ready for round 2 & it started snowing again! SO, BEAUTIFUL! Then the sun came out and the snow didn’t stop – WOW! A Sun-Snow Shower 🙂 Awesome morning!
Then I got to remembering all the old sayings that the old folks used for weather. Stuff like ‘if it rains on the first, rain for 15 days…Blackberry winter, Indian Summer, etc., so I posted this thought on facebook and got so many old sayings from Facebook friends. Here are just a few old sayings – When snow stays around….”The snow is lying waiting on the next one”.  OR “the devil is smiling when its raining and the sun shines” & “The number of fogs in august = number of snows in winter”. “My grandmother always used to say that if it was raining and the Sun was shining, the devil was beating his wife”. Or one of my favorites “If snowflakes were secrets, everyone one would raise their face to listen”. And on it went 🙂
My grandmother had a saying for everything too! I’m sure she had one for when it’s snowing on a sunny day, but I can’t remember it. BUT, at least I had time to think about it today while we were playing in the snow.

She can play all day in the snow!

Ranger is ready!

Y’all have fun today! Dress warm!
