Carter's Water Garden

After The Storm…

The rising sun revealed varying amounts of damage. Some lost trees, lots of roof damage, hail damage on cars, limbs and debris all over… Thousands still have no power this morning. BUT, in many ways we dodged a bullet! I haven’t heard of any deaths related to last nights storms! đŸ™đŸ» And it really brought many people together helping each other out, checking on neighbors, picking up debris, etc…

Here are a few images that local people posted of storm damage and a map of power outages that are still being repaired.

All our local workers are cleaning up and repairing damage as I write this. Things like this really bring things into focus. We must all count our blessings đŸ™đŸ»

Now, heres an old cliche’ for ya’… ”If you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute, it will change”! Temps in the 70’s and tornados yesterday – Frost warning Tonight! đŸ„¶

Cover tender plants, bring in house plants, etc… Frost in the AM!

Have a great day! Count your Blessings! Love thy neighbor! And cover your plants đŸȘŽ đŸ˜Š

Pond Tip Tuesday | Spring Pond Tips | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Spring is no longer a rumor… It is HERE! People are calling in a frenzy to get their names on our maintenance list to insure they get their Ponds Serviced for the season! Its always exciting moving in to Spring Pond Season! Getting ready for another great year with our Koi Ponds and Water Gardens ❀ Guess what? A proper Spring Pond Cleaning is the key to success!

If you want clean, clear water and healthy Koi, a good Spring Cleaning is of utmost importance!

We clean a LOT of Water Features for our Clients. But, many do their own clean out. So for the all the DIY’s out there, here’s a great little checklist to help you prepare for your clean-out. Experience has taught me that ALL projects benefit from advanced planning! Having all the necessary supplies on hand before you get started always makes it go faster and easier.

Come by the Pond Shack for all your Pond Supplies.

Planning ahead a little just means you can spend less time working on your pond and more time ENJOYING it!

Here’s a list of supplies you will need! đŸ‘‡đŸ»

1. Fish Nets – Before you drain your pond for the spring clean-out, you’ll need to catch and relocate your fish. Purchasing a good quality net means doing this without injuring your fish during the catch and release.

2. Planting Pots – Spring clean-out is a great time to thin and divide plants that have grown out of bounds or crowded a pot. Make sure you have some aquatic plant pots & aquatic plant soil handy so you can re-pot and share your new plants with other water gardeners.

3. Extra Gravel – After the freeze and thaw of winter, you’ll inevitably find rocks and gravel that have shifted, exposing bare liner. With an extra bag or two of gravel, you can cover exposed liner in a jiffy.

4. Aquatic Plant Fertilizer – Take advantage of the water-free accessibility of water lilies, lotus, and other plants that may need to be fertilized, by having a container of aquatic plant fertilizer tabs on hand when you’re doing your pond clean-out.

5. Container for Plant Debris – Grab an old plastic plant pot or bucket so you can easily dispose of any debris that you gather from the pond bottom or from dead plant matter.

6. Rubber Gloves and Boots – Spring clean-outs can be cold, wet, and messy. Arming yourself with boots and gloves will go a long way toward making this chore much less unpleasant.

7. Fish Container – A large tub or tank will be needed so you can have a roomy place to keep your fish during the clean-out. Use water from the pond to fill the tank and use a small fountain pump to re-circulate the water.

8. Net to Cover the Fish Container – Fish, especially large Koi, jump, and they may very well jump right out of the container that you have set up for them. Be sure to cover it with a net that is pulled tight across the container to prevent them from jumping.

9. Pump and Discharge Pipe – To drain the water out of the pond, you will need a pump and some discharge pipe. It’s OK to use your pond pump, but even better if you have an extra pump to lessen the wear and tare on your pond pump. About 2,000 GPH, depending on the size of your pond, will do the trick.

10. High Pressure Nozzle – Use a pressure nozzle on your garden hose to dislodge debris and algae from the rocks.

11. Pond Detox – Always detox the newly filled pond before you put the fish back in.

12. Expanding Foam – Expanding foam may need a bit of a touch up in some areas. Be prepared with a can of it just in case.

13. New Filter Mats – Filter mats should be replaced approximately every 3 years. If you think it might be time, be prepared by purchasing replacements prior to your clean-out.

14. Pruners – Part of a spring clean-out is pruning back dead plant material from the previous season. Make sure you have a good pair of pruners and/or scissors to get the job done.

15. Plastic Rake – You can rake the leaves right out of your pond with a small plastic (child’s) rake. The plastic lessens the chance of damaging the liner and the small size makes it easier to maneuver in tight spots than an adult size rake.

Always, always, always detoxify your pond after a clean-out! We carry this product in stock at the Pond Shack at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio. Get a bottle BEFORE your cleanout

After the Water Feature is thoroughly cleaned, re-filled, detoxed and running, carefully place the fish back in the pond & start adding fresh Cold Temperature Bacteria to the Pond to get the system up and running correctly.

After a clean-out , we recommend you start adding Beneficial Cold Water Bacteria right away. Add by label instructions and after you have used the full bottle of Cold Water Formula, it will probably be time to switch over to regular Beneficial Bacteria. Get all your Water Feature Treatments at Carters Nursery Pond & Patio.

With a little work you too will be ready for a Great outdoor season.

Its Springtime Baby! đŸŒŒ

Happy Pond Tip Tuesday!

Have a great day!

Sunday Reflections…

Well, the first week of Spring has been exciting as advertised! Plants, Ponds, Stones and Boulders have been flying! Today – Grass to trim, bird feeders to fill! Including the Hummingbird Feeders that we have recently put back up for our returning babies ❀ But not until we eat Breakfast!

Country Ham, eggs and biscuits! Suey!!!

Jacob also insists on getting a haircut today, so Jo made quick work of that!

Decent pile of hair came off that boy!

Just to prove my point that its a lot of hair… It didnt take much shaping of the pile to reveal a “dead dog” 😂

Anyway… It turns out that our son was under that pile of hair too 😼 WOW!

I would have kept going… But it turned out well 😊

The Barber came to cut my hair,
I told him that it wasn’t fair.
My hair had done him no harm,
Without it I would loose my charm.
The Barber he grinned a silly grin,
Said to cut my hair would be no sin.
That I should face it like a man,
But I’m a coward and away I ran.
Do you like sitting in a Barbers chair,
With him chopping away your lovely hair.
Once my head was full of curls,
Covering my face with twisty twirls.
But then the Barber came my way,
I was a child, I had no say.
Off came my curls one by one,
The Barber seemed to have great fun.
Now I’m old and very grey,
I’m nearly bald, my hairs gone away.
But when I see a Barbers chair,
I feel the loss of my curly hair.
You know I truly rue the day,
When that first Barber came my way.

– Bernard Shaw

Have a great Sunday Evening!

Spring has Sprung! NOT SO FAST
Jack Frost Hasn’t Left For The Season Yet! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I’m the worst about planting to early before the “Last Frost Date”… Depending on who’s frost chart you use, our last frost date is somewhere between March 31st. and April 15th.

Frost Advisory TONIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING!

I normally wait until April 15th before planting my tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, squash, melons, etc… But as a Nurseryman, I have to be ready with plants in stock! So we have moved plants back inside – tender growth shrubs, flowers, hanging baskets, flats of sedum, roses, and so much more! AND, I still have to get the rest of our houseplants back inside… UGH!!!

I hate to do it, but it beats all my plants getting frost-burnt or even worse – Dead… Gotta move em back in…

This isn’t a ”Late Frost” by any means… It has just been so warm that this is a Surprise! So I thought I would share the news, just in case you havent heard đŸ„¶

📱 Spring is Here! Cover your Plants! 😊

“The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.”

Sunday Reflections…

Good Morning! And, ”Happy Vernal Equinox! I’ve been hollering ’Spring is Coming’ since February, and finally – here we are đŸŒŒ SPRING!

Belle has been patIently waiting for Spring and the Flowers that follow 😊

Yesterday we held our annual Spring Workshop and Customer Appreciation Day and so many people came out! We talked gardening, water gardening, Koi, and more. We ate some Wonderful Craft-made Pizzas 🍕 and saw some beautiful Art Displayed by a wonderful local artist – Matt Brown.

Featured Artist Matt Brown and two Lovely Ladies ❀
Our local news station even came out and interviewed us and shot some video.

The Sun finally popped out late in the day and we saw the Full Moon after dark 🌝

We found Spring by the light of the 🌕

Now that Spring is here, its time to go to work!

“Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfill.

~ Robert Frost, A Prayer in Spring.

Y’all Have a Beautiful Sunday!
