Wow right?! I think Christmas has gotten here faster than any year in my memory…

So it begins… Christmas is coming! 🎄

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 🇺🇸

I’m having my last cup of coffee for the morning and its fixing to get busy… We are hosting the days festivities and there is a LOT to do 😊 I’ve been listening to and watching the rain fall this morning, thinking about all I have to be thankful for… It’s quite a list! 🙏🏻 At the top are all my family and friends that truly enrich my life ❤️ I have been blessed to be able to live and work with the people that are most important to me in my life. Many of them will be here at our house later today, that is a true blessing🙏🏻 When I say the prayer later today I must also remember our soldiers and sailors that couldn’t be home with family today! I am very thankful for them and their sacrifices as well 🙏🏻

Happy Thanksgiving! 🙏🏻🦃🇺🇸

We live in the greatest nation in the world!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Using All These Leaves 🍁 🍂 Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN 38305

I have been asked a few times on the radio lately about composting, so I went back in the archives and pulled this up. This was 1st published over 10 years ago!
A big blowing storm just came through and left plenty of leaves 🍁 to get us all started…

“Fall is one of my Favorite seasons! Cooler weather, fall planting and gardening and all the great family gatherings and food are wonderful. Fall is also a GREAT time to start a Compost Pile. All those leaves, plants and grasses that you have to cut back and all of the upcoming holiday food scraps add up too a great supply of usable components in a compost pile!
Starting a Compost pile is quick , easy and won’t cost you anything to get started! Compost is one of nature’s best mulches and soil amendments and you can use it instead of chemical fertilizers. Compost improves soil structure, texture and increases the soil’s water-holding capacity. Compost loosens clay soils and helps sandy soils to retain water. The organic matter in compost provides food for microorganisms, which in turn keeps the soil in a healthy, balanced condition. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus are produced naturally by the feeding of microorganisms, so few if any soil amendments will need to be added.

Once the process is complete you can use this free resource as mulch, soil amendments, top dressing for your lawn, to make compost tea for veggies & more. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

It’s easy to get started .

-Bag your grass clippings or mulch up all those leaves for the compost pile!

-Save those kitchen scraps and add them to the compost pile. Kitchen scraps are typically high in nitrogen, which helps heat up the compost pile and speed up the composting process. Egg shells, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels and scraps are good candidates for the compost pie. But DON’T add meat, grease or other animal products!

– With a compost pile, bigger is often better. Heat builds up with a bigger pile, but you don’t want to get much bigger than about 3 feet by 3 feet, if it’s too big it can be hard to work around. Multiple piles may be in order .

– Aerate your compost! If you are composting with a pile, or in a static (non-tumbling) compost bin, be sure to mix up the contents so that the pile gets oxygen and can break down effectively. Turn it with a pitch fork from time to time .

– Don’t let the compost completely dry out. A compost pile needs moisture to keep the composting process active , BUT , don’t keep it too wet.

– Too much of any one material will slow down the composting process. If you have all leaves, all grass clippings or an overload of any other single type of material, it can throw off the balance of the pile. It’s best to keep a balanced mix of green (nitrogen) and brown (carbon) materials.

When ready, this compost will be wonderful for the whole garden!

Good Luck and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!”

Sunday Reflections…

It’s Thanksgiving week! 🦃 And Thanksgiving Dinner is at my house! I’ve been thinking about all the work I have to do this week to prepare… Making a list… But, at least the menu is set… I got ham again

Im doing the ham again… Ya’ gotta love ham!

I also got the sweet potatoes 🍠 But I’m putting a different spin on it this year … Instead of the regular ”Sweet Potato Casserole” you may expect… I’m Doing a Sweet Potato Bar instead! You get a whole, baked Sweet Potato & you top it yourself! Brown sugar, butter, marsh-mellows, candied pecans, fresh cinnamon, whipped cream, etc!

I’m doing a ‘sweet potato bar’ this year. I’m envisioning a great success 😊

And I always fix several pecan pies from my MiMi’s recipe…

My family loves PIE! Heres a few I fixed for Holidays past… 2 Pecan and 3 French Coconut 🥥

Everyone else is bringing something as well, can you say Feast! There will be Family and friends and LOTS of good food! I have a LOT to be Thankful for! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I am also very aware of the men and women who serve our country 🇺🇸 and will be unable to return home for the holidays. We owe them a very special Thank you and prayer ❤️🙏🏻

And there are so many around that don’t have as much to be thankful for… Many that even dread the holidays. I know I need to do my part to help others as well…

Well, with all that being said, I better get started…

Have a Thankful week 🙏🏻

“Give me the end of the year an’ its fun
When most of the plannin’ an’ toilin’ is done;
Bring all the wanderers home to the nest,
Let me sit down with the ones I love best,
Hear the old voices still ringin’ with song,
See the old faces unblemished by wrong,
See the old table with all of its chairs
An’ I’ll put soul in my Thanksgivin’ prayers.”

Yep, The Time Is Here… A Final Reminder | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

We have topped the peak of Fall Color and are flying down the slope over the hill… Leaves are comjng down now in earnest. I know I know, Ive said it before and Im not trying to be a bother, but a Leaf Net sure would save you a LOT of work!

You can use risers and bows fashioned from PVC pipe to make a frame for your Pond Netting that will stand up to the elements. Easy to erect and easy to tear down too. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Keeping the leaves and other fall debris out of your Pond is a good thing! Leaf debris is unsightly, it also quickly starts to decompose releasing many compounds that are bad for your fish. In turn algae is fed by the decomposing leaf matter and oxygen is depleted. ALL of these things combined can be catastrophic for the health of your finned friends, in heavy leaf fall areas, it can even kill them.

ALSO – in the Fall and Winter most of the aquatic plants are asleep, leaving very little cover for your Koi… Pond Predators, like Blue Herons strike most often in the Fall and Winter… BUT, Blue Herons can’t get your treasured Koi through the Pond Netting! So that’s another big plus for having a Pond Net!

A Blue Heron is major Predator of our Koi and pond fish! BUT, we can stop them from harming our ‘finned friends’! Simple Tools like a Fall leaf net can help with more than 1 task

Pond Tip Tuesday is all about helping YOU with your Pond Maintenance. Once you get a handle on it, you will enjoy your Pond and Waterfalls so much more!

Have a great day!

Sunday Reflections…

We had a beautiful week of nice Fall temps, enjoyed the peak of Fall color and got quite a bit of work done to boot… Today was a nice family day of preparing for the Holiday Season that is upon us 🦃🎄 We decorated a bit, went thru all the menu for Thanksgiving to take inventory and be ahead of the game. We also cooked up a big pan of Chicken and sausage gumbo 🥣

The gumbo came out great!

Even the dogs helped in the kitchen…

Bell volunteered to be a taste tester 😊

We are only a week and a half away from Thanksgiving😮 This season is just flying by 🌬

I love the decorations that my wife does around the holidays 😊

Im starting early this year! Im already in the Holiday Season 🎅🏻

Thanksgiving is Coming!
