Carter's Water Garden

The Last Day of Summer is Here… | What do I need to do to my Pond going into Fall? | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Good Morning! Brace yourself… This is the last morning of late Summer… tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox, ie; The 1st day of Fall 🍁

Fall will bring many changes to our Gardens and Ponds, its important to stay ahead of the game!

I always try to post proactive things you can do to keep your Water Garden clean and your Koi healthy over the Fall & Winter. Things like – Cutting your aquatic plants back, using pond/Koi netting, watching your skimmer more closely, feeding Cool Temp Koi Food, etc. – There’s another very important thing you can do to really keep your ecosystem active and working well

– Switch to Cool Season Beneficial Bacteria!

We stock a complete line of Water Treatment Products for your Pond and Water Garden. Including Cold Temp Beneficial Bacteria | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Our Cold Water Beneficial Bacteria works and keeps on working when the plants and fish aren’t active and really helps the quality of your Pond Water! It is extremely effective at reducing sludge, dead and decaying leaves and plants, built up fish waste & excess nutrients like ammonia, nitrates & phosphates. These things make for poor water quality, reduced water clarity and can have catastrophic effects on your fishes health.

The next piece of ’Low Hanging Fruit’ im going to serve up is this : Every Pond should have a floating Pond thermometer  Our finned friends are cold blooded & water temperature is very important when it comes to seasonal feeding times. Pick one up at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio today.

This should be standard equipment in every Koi Pond and Water Garden. Grab one at Carters Nursery today…

The last Pond Tip for today is this – “Our Koi have eaten well this year & have put on a good bit of fat to get them through the Cool Season ahead. Now is the time that many of my clients and fellow Koi enthusiasts start asking a very important question…

– When do I stop feeding regular food and start feeding Cool Season Koi Food?

When the water temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit you should switch to a Lower Protein, Cool Season Koi Food. We like to call it the ‘Rule Of 60’… | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Switching to a Cool Temperature Koi Food is very important for the health of your Koi!

Well thats enough for today  I just want you all to be ready with the tools and things you need to easily succeed during the changing of the seasons.

Tomorrow is the start of a new Season! Are You ready for some Fall? 🏈 🍁 🔥

PS: Join us October 1st for a FREE Pond Maintenance Workshop!

Waterfall Wednesday | #Waterfallwednesday | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Turn around and its Waterfall Wednesday again! Which by the way is my favorite day of the week! Not only do we get to enjoy beautiful Waterfalls, its the halfway point of the week 💥 YES, thats the weekend you see in the distance ❤️ Love it!
My offering is a beautiful backyard pond with twin upper waterfalls that flow under a stone bridge before combing into a final cascade that flows into the pond below. Here are a few different prospectives to view…

A beautiful close in shot for #Waterfallwednesday.
A wider shot that shows the bridge stone and the falls as they flow into the pond.
The view from below… The Koi’s view of the world… Maybe the most beautiful view…

I sure do hope you enjoy this beautiful #Waterfallwednesday !

Happy Pondering!

Pond Tip Tuesday | Trim & Fertilize Aquatic Plants For Peak Performance | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Summertime is here & with the hot weather comes a HUGE growth of our Aquatic Plants – I LOVE IT! BUT, beware!

Fertilize your Water Lilies monthly for peak performance.

Pond Tip : Stay ahead of possible plant clogs and stream or waterfall dams by trimming and pruning your aquatic plant growth! It will keep your pond looking great and you will see increased bloom and performance as well! ALSO – Check and empty your skimmer weekly!

Its as simple as that folks! I clip dead or dying lilies once per week (and fertilize monthly during the season)! I also thin marginals as needed – Usually once or twice per season will do the trick! And vola’! NO clogs, or plant dams all season long!

Here’s to a GREAT Summer season around the Ponds!

PS: We offer weekly & monthly pond maintenance services. Call for more details – 731-424-2206

Throwback Thursday | #Throwbackthursday | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

This popped up in my Facebook feed today as a memory. I thought it was a great Throwback Thursday to share. Recreational Ponds and Interactive Water Features are HOT!

“The old fashioned, chemical treated swimming pools are becoming a thing of the past. This beautiful crystal clear “Recreational Pond” is all natural and 100% organic! Plants and bio filters do the work and you have all this beauty to enjoy when it’s too cold to swim.”

I just love #Throwbackthursday!

Pond Tip Tuesday | Keep Those Aquatic Plants Blooming! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Here we are already past the mid point of July… Your Waterlilies are still blooming, but they seem… tired 😓 All those fantastic blooms, take a LOT of energy! NOW is the time to prepare your Lilies and Lotus for the ‘Late season push’…

Giving your aquatic plants a little trim and feeding them with some easy to apply aquatic fertilizer tabs will help them to perform well into the Fall season!

My Pond Tip today – Keep your Aquatic Plants fed and trimmed.

Try doing these 2 things and you can thank me later

#1 keep your lilies & lotus fed (fertilized) to keep them performing into late summer and fall. It’s very simple to do! Come by and grab a container of Aquatic Plant Fertilizer Tabs. One of us will show you how to poke em’ down into the root zone of the plant… and your done… It’s that simple

Your Aquatic Plants will flourish with a little TLC. Do it now and enjoy them all the way to frost in late October.

AND #2 is to keep your aquatic plant growth in check! All this Warm weather has them growing like weeds

  •  selectively trim marginal aquatics to keep in check and to promote strong compact growth.
  • remove yellowed unattractive Lilly pads & spent blooms to Promote new growth and bloom.
  • Keep Waterfalls & streams free and clear of excessive plant growth and debris! A plant dam will cause a leak every time!

That’s my Pond Tip for the week. It will keep your plants in top shape well into Fall & it will get you up and out in the garden for some much needed “Aquatherapy” 😊

Have a great night!

Throwback Thursday | Water Lilies | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Yep, it’s #throwbackthursday once again and this memory just popped up in my Facebook feed and provided the perfect inspiration. Aquatic plants are some of my favorites! And this beauty is hard to beat ❤️
Say hello to – Nymphaea ‘Red Flare’

This night-blooming lily produces magnificent magenta red, flowers that are held high above the waters’ surface. These fragrant blooms can stand 7″ to 10″ tall 🤩 Did I mention that they also bloom at night? Yes, the blooms open in late evening and bloom all night and into the early morning. A total show stopper!

Red flair is one of the tropical lilies that I always try to procure for my own Pond. They achieve the “trifecta”… Beautiful, Fragrant and a Night Bloomer! Boom 💥

Well, that’s my offering for Throwback Thursday!

Have a great evening 😊
