Pond Tip Tuesday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Well, we are past the Summer Solstice and approaching the 4th of July. Meaning, the HEAT is ON! 🌞🥵 All the aquatic plants are full and lush as they can be. But, they are getting heavy & about to need some TLC!

I always wait until after the 4th of July party, then I give my plants a good haircut. It will extend the beauty of most plants through the remainder of the season. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio

The 4th of July is a great time to trim back your heavy hanging baskets, overflowing pottery & your crazy Aquatic Plants!
It’s also a great time to fertilize them! It will blow your mind how quickly they fill right back in and start blooming again. WOW!

I always cleanup & trim back my plants mid season to rejuvenate vigor & produce more blooms into the late season. Try it!

While you’re at it, have a jar of Aquatic Plant fertilizer and feed those babies! The ROI is Beautiful! 😊

We stock Aquatic Plant Fertilizer Tablets for your convenience at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio. They are super easy to use and work great! Keep your Aquatics looking great all season long!

So there you have it! After that big 4th party, spend a little time and trim back your bloomers and your aquatic plants, and fertilize/feed them! It will keep you looking great all the way through Fall!

Happy Pondering 🤔

Pond Tip Tuesday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I Love Koi! I love watching them swim, I love feeding them, I love the fact that they are so long lived as well. And, I LOVE finding new Koi that catch my eye and adding to my collection… But, how many Koi in any given pond are enough?
– When do I have too many Fish?

Staying in balance is what it’s all about. Flow rates, filter size, plant load AND fish population! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Not having too many fish in your pond is a Big Deal! It literally means the difference between a healthy low maintenance pond & a problem pond… Who wants green water & sickly fish?

I try to keep my fish stock to a percentage. You can figure it two ways – 1” of fish per square foot of surface area OR 1” of fish per 10 gallons of water. If you keep to these parameters you will have a much healthier, lower maintenance pond.

Remember the guidelines when it comes to fish stocking rates – 1” of fish per square foot of surface area OR 1” of fish per 10 gallons of water. This will help keep your pond in balance! And it will help you relax… That’s a Huge part of being a Pond Owner 😊

Pond Tip Tuesday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

It’s getting HOT folks! Saturday was a scorcher – 102 F. Heat factor… Whew 😅 Can you say “Dog Days” are coming… What do you do when it’s too Hot to breathe? A/C!!!

A better question: What can you do in the Hot months to help your Koi survive & thrive?

As the temperatures rise, the Dissolved Oxygen in the water goes Down… How can you increase the D.O. In the warmer months? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Waterfalls and streams help to increase the Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.) in your Pond.

In the Spring, Fall & Winter D.O. Is usually ample when you have a waterfall and aquatic plants, But, as the water temperature increases in the late Spring and as we enter Summer, the D.O. goes way down! That can cause serious problems for your Koi! Even death 💀! What can you do to fix this?

Many of my clients have an aeration system in their Pond. This helps to increase the D.O. (Dissolved Oxygen) In the water! It’s also a great safety for your fish as well, it’s very unlikely that the waterfall pump and the aeration system would fail at the same time, leaving your finned friends vulnerable. I recommend powering your aerator on a separate circuit as well, in case of GFCI interruptions. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

A good aeration system really increases the Dissolved Oxygen in your pond water! This means a healthy pond, clean water & healthy vigorous Koi!

As you see here, the air column pushes up from the bottom, really moving and oxygenating the water.

A good aeration system is fairly inexpensive & simple to install as well.

This is my Pond Tip for the week and I hope it helps 😊

Happy Pondering!

Pond Tip Tuesday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Good morning fellow “Pond People”! We have been enjoying a very unusual Spring season! Now the temps are rising and Summer is almost here! With it, as usual, comes a HUGE growth of Aquatic Plants – I LOVE it! BUT, beware!

Aquatic Plants are a BIG part of a Water Garden. Stay ahead of any possible problems by keeping plants trimmed and in check.

Pond Tip : Stay ahead of any possible plant clogs and stream or waterfall dams by trimming and pruning your aquatic plant growth! It will keep your pond looking great and you will see increased bloom and performance as well! ALSO – Check and empty your skimmer weekly! 💥

Its as simple as that folks! I clip dead or dying lilies once per week (and fertilize monthly during the season)! I also thin marginals as needed – Usually once or twice per season will do the trick! And vola’! NO clogs, or plant dams all season long! 😉

Here’s to a GREAT Summer season around the Ponds!

Pond Tip Tuesday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Having a Koi Pond or Water Garden is such a joy! A BIG part of having one is setting it up to be LOW Maintenance! Filters that collect debris and keep the water clean are a must! But there are a few other things that really help in the care and maintenane of a Water Garden… One of the biggies is a basic “Pond Net”!

A small Pond Net with an extendable handle is a must have if your a Pond Owner in my opinion! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio

There are several types of nets as you know – Leaf nets, Koi Nets, Skimmer Nets, etc… But a general purpose Pond Net is what I’m talking about! They are perfect for getting those 2 or 3 leaves off the bottom of the pond. Or if you drop something in the pond and need to fish it out – you’ll need a dip net to grab it. They are perfect for getting a piece of gravel out of the bottom of the skimmer too!

This is a little larger net that is multi purpose. You can clean debris and even move fish with this one.

Inexpensive and invaluable! Add one to your Pond Tools. You won’t be sorry 😊

Have a great day!

Pond Tip : My Koi Pond Is Frozen! Don’t Break The ICE! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

10 degree windchill this morning 🥶 Brrr! Ice Ice Baby! But, don’t worry, it will be ok… Just don’t break the ice!

Don’t break the ice! It will harm your Koi! The powerful shock waves created by a blow to the ice can break their bones and rupture organs!

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER break the ice by banging on it! It can cause your fish great harm – it can even KILL them! To allow the escape/exchange of gasses in a frozen over pond, keep a hole open in the ice. This is IMPORTANT!!! It will keep the gases from building up under the ice and allow for oxygen exchange and keep your fish from suffocating. This will also allow the pump to get water if the surface is frozen. If you have a skimmer, this will be MUCH easier on you! The water movement will help keep the ice from forming. You may need to keep the hole open by adding water from a water hose, bucket or pan of water. (This is why I always say “keep a dry hose” or a 5 gallon bucket for this purpose! If & when you use your water hose be sure to drain it when finished-to keep it from freezing and bursting, or just keep it in your garage). You can also use a floating pond heater or a small pump in a shallow area to “flash up’ and break the water surface. Just do it! 😊

It’s cold for a few days, but it will warm soon. Lets take care of our finned friends ❤️

Spring is Coming !  💐
