Friday Radio Report | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

FUN show today with the “180 Crew” – Dan Reaves and Sea Bass! It’s HOT outside and that was a topic of conversation for sure! Add in the fact it’s also been WET and stormy makes for interesting things in the garden! Including lots of insects, fungal problems, leeching of nutrients from excessive rain, WEEDS! Etc., Etc…

  • One lady in particular is having problems with their Zucchini rotting on the vine. I suggested that it’s probably blossom end rot, caused by calcium deficiency. The soil needs lime to be added. It’s not an instant fix to add lime to the soil, but it will help for the future. There are calcium rich foliage sprays that will help too.
  • Another caller was asking about a hardy palm for our area – The most popular and hardy Palm I have found for our area is a Windmill Palm. They really add a tropical feel and survive well in our area. Call me for specifics or pricing.
  • Another great question was about making Pesto – do I have any advice? I lOVE pesto! And, yes I will give you my opinion. To me the biggie is FRESH, High Quality Ingredients! I also suggested trying an alternative to Pine Nuts… Pistachios! Try it and tell me what you think! Ingredients – 4 cups fresh basil leaves. 1/2 cup shelled, roasted pistachios, 1/2 cup FRESHLY grated Parmesan cheese, 3-5 cloves of garlic, fresh squeezed lemon juice – 1 TBS., 1/2-3/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Salt, Pepper and I add 1 dried cayenne pepper! DO NOT – Slap your Momma! Although you may want to after you taste this Pesto! YUM!
  • Our new “Roundabout” at Deddrick and Highland St. is still very controversial! I’ll be glad when it’s built and traffic is flowing well again 🙂
  • Night Fishing – Yes or No? I say YES!

Summer is HERE! Get out and ENJOY!

Next week is a BIGGIE! Sunday, the 1st. of July marks the half-way point of the year! WOW! Time flies…

AND – Wednesday is the 4th of July! Independence Day! Fireworks and FUN! God Bless America!

Have a safe and happy 4th. of JULY! God Bless America!

Y’all have a great weekend!

PS: Starting next Friday I will be on 2 hours each Friday instead of only 1! TWICE the FUN! Give me a call 🙂

This ‘Outdoor Room’ is an Extension of the Home! Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I have been touching on the “Outdoor Lifestyle Area” as of late. You know, a comfortable area to enjoy right outside your door or window. A place to enjoy the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees… 🙂 But with ALL the comforts of HOME! The idea isn’t a new one… It’s really just history repeating itself. In fact, comfortable outdoor spaces have been in demand as far back as history goes! And for good reason! There is nothing better than kicking back in your favorite chair by the ponds edge, the grill is smoking up something good to eat while your kids play in the sun.

With that thought in mind, here is another short video of just such a space…

Hump Day Koi Fix | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Lets talk about a variation of the Koi we looked at last week. Last week we talked about the Asagi Koi. Today lets talk about the Shusui Koi – Shusui are the scaleless (Doitsu) version of the Asagi.

In Japanese Shusui means “Autumn Water”. Shusui are the scaleless version of an Asagi.

At first sight, you might say they have little in common with the Asagi Koi. The normal blue net pattern is replaced by a row of scales along the dorsal line (top of the back). But the Shusui is actually bred by crossing an Asagi with a German mirror carp. This was first done in 1910 by Yoshigoro Akiyama, resulting in the Shusui – the very first Doitsu scaled Koi variation!

Like the Asagi, the belly, gill plates, side and fins of the Shusui should have an orange or red pattern – Preferably red.

I hope this little “Koi Fix” satisfies you a bit and helps you get through the week 😊

Happy Pondering!

WHAT Makes an Outdoor Lifestyle Area (Video) | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Sure, a lot of things make up an Outdoor lifestyle area. But I think the best ones are an extension of the home. They tie the Indoor & Outdoor spaces together seamlessly. They are comfortable spaces and they can be enjoyed year round.

I took this short video yesterday of such a space. We have worked with these folks for many years now and I stopped by for a visit. My video doesn’t do it justice 😊

The Water Feature is the nucleus of the space. It can be viewed from inside the home as well as most anywhere within the Outdoor Living Area. The wonderful sound of the Waterfalls fills the air.

Please let me know if I could assist you in designing an Outdoor Living Area of your own.

Happy Pondering,

Sunday Reflections…

What a beautiful night last night was. We stayed out by the Pond till midnight or later. Summer time in Tennessee is so fine!

My Pond is even more beautiful at night I think.

Then early this morning we were sitting on the porch watching a nice gentle rain shower fall. I’m thankful for all these blessings.

“That beautiful season the Summer!
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;
and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.”
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Enjoy your Sunday!

This week we had several great calls/questions!

  • Leyland cypress problems! Dead spots, etc… Why and what can I do? This has become all to common. This is a big reason that many are advising against planting Leyland Cypress all together. Disease has become common among the Leyland. Especially Bot and/or Seiridium Canker. Limbs turn yellow to grey and/or completely die. You can normally find sunken cankers oozing sap around the main stem. You can’t spray to treat this disease! You can only try to keep them healthy and happy… Including irrigating them during dry weather. Drought stress is VERY bad for these trees.
  • Do we still have flowers and hanging baskets? YES! We are loaded with beautiful flowers 🙂 Y’all Come!
  • AND the #1 subject today, was of course – Tomorrows POND TOUR!
