Carter's Water Garden

Sunday Reflections…

Up and at it this Sunday morning… Quick chores, feeding the animals, feeding us, coffee ☕️ goes without saying… Spring is in the air! Shrubs and flowering trees are busting open, some a little prematurely… But, it’s a beautiful thing to see.

Last weeks bud is this weeks early flower. Spring is almost here! It’s a little early, but man it sure is beautiful 🤩

This is when you can really see the coming of Spring. The trees changing color, the daffodils 🌼 blooming. Forsythia blooming, early cherry trees and plum and crab apples busting open… It’s hope and healing and medicine for those ailing from Spring fever 🤒 Get out and find your cure!

“Flowers clad in colorful t-shirts and vibrant shorts are swaying in the gentle breeze. Birds are singing. Trees start filling with leaves, and the branches laden with exploding buds look majestic. Balmy spring days are coming. I am happy, very happy.”

~ Bhuwan Thapaliya

Have a great day!

Sunday Reflections…

Crazy weather… It was supposed to have rained all day, but it didn’t rain a drop 💧So in essence we got a free day! 😊 So nice and so warm, it turned out to be a wonderful Spring day! Walking around the Landscape, so much is blooming 🌼 Daffodils, Magnolias, Forsythia and the Maples, birch and willow are coming out like gangbusters – don’t forget the Privet 🤧 can you say Pollen…

My grandad and I built this old chicken house together and our hens laid many an egg. This old Magnolia that lives back here never disappoints ❤️ Always a harbinger of Spring.

Did I mention crazy weather? Rain tonight. Freezing temps tomorrow night, followed by more rain and a chance of snow by weeks end… “If you don’t like the weather”…

Have a wonderful evening! 1 week from today we will have a much longer evening 😊

“Come with me into the woods. Where spring is advancing, as it does, no matter what, not being singular or particular, but one of the forever gifts, and certainly visible.”

~ Mary Oliver

Pond Tip Tuesday | Gear Up! | The Leaves Are Falling | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

The Fall color show is really starting to unfold 🍁🍂🍁 I LOVE the Fall Landscape… The color and texture of the sumac always gets it started. Then slowly but surely all the other native trees follow suit! My favorites are always the Dogwoods and Red maples, along with the sassafras, Black Gum, Hickory and Sugar Maples… Its just so beautiful 🤩 But the color fades, the leaves fall and many will find their way into your Pond.

A small Pond Dip Net with an extendable handle is a must have if your a Pond Owner! It will make cleanup so much easier! Having the right tools is the key | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio 2846 Old Medina Rd. Jackson, Tennessee

There are several types of nets as you know – Leaf nets, Koi Nets, Skimmer Nets, etc… But a general purpose Pond ‘Dip’ Net is what I’m talking about! They are perfect for fishing those 2 or 3 leaves off the bottom of the pond. Or if you drop something in the pond and need to get it out – you’ll need a dip net to grab it. They are perfect for getting a piece of gravel out of the bottom of the skimmer too!

They even come in different sizes… You can clean debris and even move fish with this one.

Inexpensive and invaluable! Add one to your Pond Tools. You won’t be sorry 😉

Have a great “Pond Tip Tuesday”!

Monday Morning Moment of Zen

This was a place of Zen for me for many many years… Sitting or laying in the shade of this old Hickory tree. It was a host to mistletoe and a home for many squirrels 🐿 including a large number of flying squirrels… And in the Fall the golden color was so beautiful…

I took this picture laying down under this old tree. I was told by many that this was the tallest Hickory tree they had ever seen… It was over 200 years old.

This 200+ year old tree is gone now 😢 But I still remember it… And I can still find a quiet peaceful place of Zen sitting under a nice tree or in the woods. Try it today and enjoy some Fall beauty ❤️

Throwback Thursday at Carters Nursery, Pond and Patio

I LOVE #throwbackthursday! It’s a wonderful opportunity for meaningful memories. Like this one today.

My dad brought this Saucer Magnolia home many many years ago. It wound up in a special place in our Garden.

My dads friend George grew all kinds of trees up in McMinnville, TN. When dad saw these blooming, he knew he wanted one. He brought one home from a visit years ago for me to plant. We waited until the proper time and my Uncle Doug and me planted it here. It’s always a dependable bloomer and a harbinger of Spring.
This throwback is also special because we just recently lost Uncle Doug to Covid. Seeing this picture today, really gave me a special memory. Thanks Shannon 😊

Have a great #throwbackthursday ❤️

Today Is The 50th. Anniversary Of Earth Day 🌏

Today is Earth Day! What is Earth Day you ask… Here’s the official definition – “Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.”

Like most public things right now, Earth Day celebrations have been cancelled for public gatherings… BUT, you can personally celebrate by doing something “Earth Friendly” like –

  • Plant a tree (Native please)
  • Plant some flowers (Pollinators)
  • Start seperating & recycling trash
  • Start a compost pile for organic compost
  • Talk to your kids about responsible conservation

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, with the goal of raising awareness about mankind’s role in protecting our natural world.

We are going to plant a tree on our property today with our son in  honor of Earth Day! I hope you can get out and enjoy our beautiful world today as well!

Check out Googles Earth Day theme 👇🏻

Best Trees For Fall Color | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

This came up yesterday on the radio – So here ya go…

“We’ve been talking a lot about fall color around the nursery, on the radio and on this blog. Have you been getting out to see it and experience it… I hope you have been and are still doing just that! 😊 Here’s the color map –

https://smokymountains.com/fall-foliage-map/

I have had SO MANY questions the last couple of weeks about my favorite trees to plant for Fall color and what I would recommend to plant in people’s Landscapes. So here is a short list of some of my favorite trees that do well here in West Tennessee.“

Mark’s Top Ten Trees for Fall Color –

  •  Red Maple – Acer rubrum

One of our best trees for Fall Color.

  • Sugar Maple –  Acer saccharum

Wonderful Color + the BEST Syrup ever😜

  • Balled Cypress – Taxodium distichum

Such a unique tree! Bald Cypress are very underutilized for their seasonal interest. They are such a beautiful tree. Interesting fact : The Bald Cypress is a deciduous conifer.

  • Dogwoods – Cornus florida

Everyone thinks of spring with the Dogwood tree blossoms, BUT – They are beautiful in the fall with their red tinged leaves and shiny red seeds.

  • Sassafrass – Sassafras albidum

One of my favorite trees for several reasons! But the biggie is the breathtaking Fall Color! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

  • Ginko – Ginkgo biloba

A “Living Fossil” – This unique tree ‘WOW’S’ in  the Fall!

  • Crepe Myrtle –  Lagerstroemia

Not only does this ornamental tree bring outstanding Spring & Summer interest, they also bring eye popping color every Fall!

  • Black Gum –  Nyssa sylvatica

The Black Gum or Tupelo Gum tree is one of my favorite natives!

  • White Oak – Quercus alba

Big native shade tree with striking, deep crimson/red Fall color.

  • Sourwood – Oxydendrum arboreum

A very unique native tree, really shows out in the Fall!
