I had to put on my coat to drink my coffee on the porch this morning while watching the sun come up đ Cold morning, but what a beautiful day! We have been enjoying a string of these âperfect daysâ…40âish degrees in the morning, then warming into the 70âs, not a cloud in the sky â€ïž

We got several things done this week, including our last event for the season, our annual Fall Pond Maintenance Workshopâ is in the books… It always seems to sneak up on me, but I think this year has flown faster than any I remember… Boom đ„ weâre in October… Boom đ„ in a month we fall back and its dark at 5pm… Here comes Thanksgiving đŠ and Christmas đ… I guess what Iâm saying is, get out there and enjoy this beautiful season! It will be gone before we know it đđ
“There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots may be lighted on, and produce so pleasant an effect on the feelings, as now in October.”
~ Nathaniel Hawthorne
Iâll be in the garden the rest of the day!
Have a wonderful Sunday!

Good Morning! Brace yourself⊠This is the last morning of late Summer⊠tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox, ie; The 1st day of Fall đ

I always try to post proactive things you can do to keep your Water Garden clean and your Koi healthy over the Fall & Winter. Things like â Cutting your aquatic plants back, using pond/Koi netting, watching your skimmer more closely, feeding Cool Temp Koi Food, etc. â Thereâs another very important thing you can do to really keep your ecosystem active and working wellÂ
â Switch to Cool Season Beneficial Bacteria!

Our Cold Water Beneficial Bacteria works and keeps on working when the plants and fish arenât active and really helps the quality of your Pond Water! It is extremely effective at reducing sludge, dead and decaying leaves and plants, built up fish waste & excess nutrients like ammonia, nitrates & phosphates. These things make for poor water quality, reduced water clarity and can have catastrophic effects on your fishes health.

The next piece of âLow Hanging Fruitâ im going to serve up is this : Every Pond should have a floating Pond thermometer  Our finned friends are cold blooded & water temperature is very important when it comes to seasonal feeding times. Pick one up at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio today.

The last Pond Tip for today is this â âOur Koi have eaten well this year & have put on a good bit of fat to get them through the Cool Season ahead. Now is the time that many of my clients and fellow Koi enthusiasts start asking a very important questionâŠ
â When do I stop feeding regular food and start feeding Cool Season Koi Food?

Switching to a Cool Temperature Koi Food is very important for the health of your Koi!
Well thats enough for today  I just want you all to be ready with the tools and things you need to easily succeed during the changing of the seasons.Â
Tomorrow is the start of a new Season! Are You ready for some Fall? đ đ đ„
PS: Join us October 1st for a FREE Pond Maintenance Workshop!

The older I get, the quicker these seasonal changes seem to come⊠WOW! Are we already looking at the END of Summer?

Summer is going out on a HOT note! High 90âs today & we may very well see 100 degrees tomorrow! đ„” But, then on the official 1st day of Fall (Thursday the 22nd) the high is only gonna be around 80 degrees⊠Do the seasons know itâs time?

âDuring the autumnal equinox, the sun shines directly on the equator, and the northern and southern hemispheres get the same amount of rays. The alignment officially occurs this year on Thursday, September 22â
So the 1st full day of Fall is on the 22nd. Are you ready for Fall?
âLyric night of the lingering Indian summer, Shadowy fields that are scentless but full of singing, Never a bird, but the passionless chant of insects, Ceaseless, insistent. The grasshopper’s horn, and far-off, high in the maples, The wheel of a locust leisurely grinding the silence Under a moon waning and worn, broken, Tired with summer. Let me remember you, voices of little insects, Weeds in the moonlight, fields that are tangled with asters, Let me remember, soon will the winter be on us, Snow-hushed and heavy. Over my soul murmur your mute benediction, While I gaze, O fields that rest after harvest, As those who part look long in the eyes they lean to, Lest they forget them.â
~ Sara Teasdale

I have been asked a few times on the radio lately about composting, so I went back in the archives and pulled this up. This was 1st published over 10 years ago!
A big blowing storm just came through and left plenty of leaves đ to get us all started…
âFall is one of my Favorite seasons! Cooler weather, fall planting and gardening and all the great family gatherings and food are wonderful. Fall is also a GREAT time to start a Compost Pile. All those leaves, plants and grasses that you have to cut back and all of the upcoming holiday food scraps add up too a great supply of usable components in a compost pile!
Starting a Compost pile is quick , easy and wonât cost you anything to get started! Compost is one of natureâs best mulches and soil amendments and you can use it instead of chemical fertilizers. Compost improves soil structure, texture and increases the soilâs water-holding capacity. Compost loosens clay soils and helps sandy soils to retain water. The organic matter in compost provides food for microorganisms, which in turn keeps the soil in a healthy, balanced condition. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus are produced naturally by the feeding of microorganisms, so few if any soil amendments will need to be added.

Itâs easy to get started .
-Bag your grass clippings or mulch up all those leaves for the compost pile!
-Save those kitchen scraps and add them to the compost pile. Kitchen scraps are typically high in nitrogen, which helps heat up the compost pile and speed up the composting process. Egg shells, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels and scraps are good candidates for the compost pie. But DONâT add meat, grease or other animal products!
â With a compost pile, bigger is often better. Heat builds up with a bigger pile, but you donât want to get much bigger than about 3 feet by 3 feet, if itâs too big it can be hard to work around. Multiple piles may be in order .
â Aerate your compost! If you are composting with a pile, or in a static (non-tumbling) compost bin, be sure to mix up the contents so that the pile gets oxygen and can break down effectively. Turn it with a pitch fork from time to time .
â Donât let the compost completely dry out. A compost pile needs moisture to keep the composting process active , BUT , donât keep it too wet.
â Too much of any one material will slow down the composting process. If you have all leaves, all grass clippings or an overload of any other single type of material, it can throw off the balance of the pile. Itâs best to keep a balanced mix of green (nitrogen) and brown (carbon) materials.
When ready, this compost will be wonderful for the whole garden!
Good Luck and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!â
