We spent another day riding the backroads & some main streets too 😊 I really enjoy doing things like this. Meeting local people, seeing the natural beauty of our own state, it’s very refreshing. Jo has been the pilot and I am the navigator with a map & an iPhone… Nothing and nowhere is safe 😂
Here are a few more pics from the road –

Ive got a pretty cool wife. When I asked her what she wanted to do for our 25th. Wedding Anniversary, she didn’t say what I expected. I figured a cruise or island trip or the like. No sir. She said why don’t we just mess around and take a slow trip around some cool spots in the state. Drive the back roads and see where they take us… WOW! That just hit the spot & sounded perfect! So that’s what we have been doing the last few days. I’m going to put a few pictures on here today and a few more tomorrow and so on and just see where else this road leads 😊
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Taking time to actually STOP & smell the roses is a rare thing. Let’s all agree to do just that this week! Stop by the park! Or, take a walk, or go fishing, or take a ride in the country, or …. The possibilities are endless! The reward will be yours and yours alone 😊

Working and spending time in my garden is my enjoyment. Slow down this week & stop and smell the roses.

I had a customer come in to the Pond Shop yesterday needing help. He has had a Pond for several years now and is ready to make it lower in maintenance. He wants to put a skimmer on his Pond! He is a DIY guy and wants to install it himself and he wants to do it right. BUT, he has fish… Several are pretty good sized Koi and he is worried that the Pond Skimmer could be a problem… His #1 question was – “Will my Koi get trapped in my Skimmer Filter”?

One of the first things you need to do when choosing a Skimmer Filter for your Pond is to find out what size Skimmer you need.
The first thing I told him while answering his question was NOT to worry about the fish. It’s overwhelmingly NOT a problem. I showed him around the Ponds here at the Nursery & once he saw the simple operation of the system and how healthy & happy my Koi are he was a believer.
Then I asked him a few questions to figure out what type and size Skimmer would be best for his application.
- I found out that he has a fairly large Pond/Water Garden, 3′ deep, with quite a few fish.
- He has over 2,500 gallons of water in his system.
- He has a fairly powerful pump – around 7,000 GPH (gallons per hour). The water from that pump splits and goes to 2 different Waterfalls.
- His Pond has No bottom aeration.
- We sketched out the pond from a couple of photos that he had on his phone and were able to quickly figure out what he needed.
He installed this Pond himself. It’s basically round in shape with 2 different Waterfalls. The pond is 3′ in depth & the upper shelf is approximately 1 to 1 1/2′ in depth. There is no stone in the pond and no gravel on the bottom… Which after he saw how we do it is about to change 😎 Seeing is Believing!
Not only did he need a Skimmer Filter, he needed a Plumbing upgrade! He had a mis-mash of plumbing pieces going to 2 waterfalls from a submerged pump in the bottom of the pond. So we specified 2″ flex PVC Plumbing AND we added a Check valve in there to make it easy for future maintenance. We also decided to install a 2 stone aeration system.

So easy to install! A simple Aeration System will make your pond healthier, your fish happier & will help with much needed dissolved oxygen for your finned pets.
And we specified a Top of the line Skimmer, with an adjustable faceplate, a rigid debris basket and a removable weir (just in case his fish need some time to adjust to the new Skimmer).

This is the Cadillac of Pond Skimmers! With an adjustable faceplate, removable weir & rigid debris basket, the Signature Series 1000 Pond Skimmer by Aquascape Inc. has got you covered! | We are Master Certified Aquascape Contractors! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee.

Here’s a side view of his new Skimmer! When this is properly installed it will be virtually invisible & do most of the work throughout the year!

The Skimmer we chose has LOTS of room inside the basket, an adjustable faceplate, a removable weir and is a great choice if you have Koi. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee.
He left ‘Carter Country’ a Happy Customer!😊 He purchased the Skimmer, plumbing, fittings & Aeration System plus 10 bags of gravel and set off to install his new Skimmer 🙂 He has promised to send me an after picture and a report on his installation. I will share it with y’all too. It makes me smile when I talk to a fellow Pond Enthusiast that is excited about the hobby and his Pond!
PS: IF you ever have a problem with Koi getting trapped in the skimmer (its only happened a few times in 30 years) – give me a call and I will help walk you through the “training process”. It’s really as simple as checking daily and shooing them out, they will get the point. It’s also a great idea to remove the weir flap from the skimmer faceplate until the new wears off for the fish IF your having issues.
Happy Pondering!

Last week I talked about the Kohaku because I had customers looking for some and we got to talking and looking until we found one he liked. As you know the Kohaku is one of the “Big Three” of the Koi world – The Gosanke – Kohaku, Sanke & Showa.
I have covered them before and broke each down in that article, but I think that each one of the Big 3 needs their own Blog! So today We’re talking about the 2nd. of the Big 3 – The Sanke!

In the early 1900’s, a new variety of Koi was developed by the addition of sumi (black) markings to the basic Kohaku patterns of red and white. This new variety was named Taisho Sanke and is usually referred to as simply ‘Sanke’.
Originally known as Taisho Sanke or Taisho Sanshoku they are commonly called Sanke by most in the hobby. Sanke Koi are one of the most popular and rightly so. They are beautiful, graceful fish & have been in the forefront since their introduction. The word ‘Sanke’ means ‘Tri Color’ in Japanese, signifying their three colors – White (Shiro) the base color, Red (Hi) the main overlaid pattern & Black (Sumi) the 3rd. accent color pattern. They say a show quality Sanke starts with an outstanding Kohaku pattern with beautiful black (sumi) accents that compliment the Koi. Some variations of Sanke include – Doitsu Sanke, Maruten Sanke, Tancho Sanke and Gin Rin Sanke.
Remember- Enjoy your Koi! 😊
and…. Happy Pondering!

I want to keep it short and sweet today. Today is my Wife & I’s 25th. wedding anniversary! WOW is all I can say! All I have I owe to her, & I love her more today than ever. Happy Anniversary Sweetheart!

That’s us cutting my Groomsmens cake. She made it for me. If you look close you can see that it’s me crossing a stream and waterfalls. She knew me so well even back then 😊

I was doing a few things at the office late yesterday evening & ended up sitting down up front by the Pagoda Stone Fountain for a little while to cool off, have a drink and relax. I have always loved this area, but just don’t get much time to hang out here. All I can say is WOW! I LOVE this Fountain! This little video doesn’t do it justice! It’s just perfect beside the patio/deck up there. Great sound and the lighting effects are top notch! I think a fountain like this should be by every deck &/or patio everywhere! What a difference it would make for peoples enjoyment and relaxation.
My little contribution to Monday morning!
A little bit of Zen for ya’…

Last night the winds changed to blow from a Northerly direction which really cooled it down nice. It’s been SO Hot! The water in the pool has been so warm! Almost to warm… Much warmer than the North wind! Getting out of the pool was a chilly experience 😊 This morning it was in the mid 60’s and felt like heaven! Walking around in the Garden was so nice. All the blooming perennials and flowers seem to like it too. Pure Paradise! Such simple blessings are fuel for the soul! I’m a thankful man!
“The many great gardens of the world, of literature and poetry, of painting and music, of religion and architecture, all make the point as clear as possible: The soul cannot thrive in the absence of a garden. If you don’t want paradise, you are not human; and if you are not human, you don’t have a soul.”
