Carter's Water Garden

Tradition Lives On!* (see social distancing guidelines)…

As Per Tradition”, we, the “Distinguished Few” will meet at the “Big Pond”, at the Nursery & Take our Annual ‘Chilly Willy Plunge” exactly at sunrise, which is 6:41am. In the morning! Always a fun event! But, tomorrow mornings ‘CWP’ will be taken at a crisp, 37 degrees Fahrenhight! Can you say shrinkage 🥶 We are also enforcing “Social Distancing” practices on all attendees. Masks  🎭 & Rubber gloves 🧤 are required for all who attend. #BYORG&M…

Get here early! Sunrise is 6:41am! You will need time to park and walk to the ponds edge. As you know, only about 15 people at a time have room to get in the pond comfortably. This year we will go in 3 at a time to allow the proper 6’ distancing for safety. Our 1st group in will be “first come, first served”! So I would get here early if you want to be in the official photo, that will be on the cover of Our annual book.

I will open the gates as early as possible so everyone can get a number and get in position. I recommend that you come dressed in your chosen ‘Plunge attire’, wearing a robe or heavy coat & water shoes or flip flops. Some have even worn Cover All’s that they unzip and step right out of. And don’t forget your mask 😷 & gloves 🧤!

This year, because of health concerns we are requiring everyone to pre-register for the Chilly Willy Plunge. We have set up a Hot-Line for your convenience. Simply dial 1-800-chilly Willy, follow the prompts & get your plunge attire ready! 💥

REMEMBER – Bring your own towels! 2 or 3 of them! And, bring your own hand sanitizer & wipes as well as gloves, masks, & Lysol brand disinfect spray.

– Hot coco will be available and will be dispensed in throw away cups.

Man, am I ready for this! 🌞 Viva La’ ‘Tradicion’!

He Haw y’all! See ya’ in the AM!

Sunday Reflections…

Bad storm last night! Tornado sirens, heavy winds, hail, lightning, thunder, etc, etc… Scary!
But this morning – Beautiful sunrise! Calm winds, the birds 🐦 are singing! Gorgeous!

Up with the sun! It’s time to get outside & see what’s happening in the garden. Spring is Here! The whole world is coming to life!

I guess my point on this beautiful Sunday morning is – When this storm ⛈ (Coronavirus) gets past us, we are in for something nice! We just have to ride it out… The Calm after the storm …

I’m approaching everyday one step at a time! Today’s plan –

  •  Breakfast 🥞
  • Work on my Container Garden
  • Shower
  • Nap!
  • Fire up Grill
  • Eat
  •  Guitar 🎸
  • Early to Bed!

“I am tired, I am worn
For this is the calm after the storm
Heart beat ceases to race
Everything seems to fall into place
Take comfort in cycles and patterns,
Separate the insignificant from what matters
History repeats itself they say,
The universe works in funny ways
So push thoughts of growing older,
Of growing colder, of forgetting to be bolder
To the back of my mind
Shelved away somewhere difficult to find
And think instead of stories that turn out okay
Think of the sound of waves and rainy days
For I am slowly breathing
Almost sleeping
Nearly dreaming
Simply being.“

Ghost Town…

Social Distancing is apparently working now. I went to pick up a couple of things for family (curbside and click list only)… WOW! It’s like a ghost town out there.

This is a Saturday at 11am! About 8 cars in this 200 acre parking lot! WOW!

Almost no cars on the road, except for big trucks! I guess the silver lining is that the stores will be able to get restocked now…

Almost NO traffic! There are a few out on bikes or walking. Social Distancing is being taken seriously…

Please pray for the country! For all the folks that can’t work! And especially for all the people who have fallen ill to this terrible virus!

We will get through this! Lets stay vigilant through this fight for our families and for each other!

God Bless America!

Throwback Thursday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

A Facebook friend posted the link below today (Thanks Conrad 😉) 👇🏻

Yes, the main body of the migration is upon us! I have had 2 Hummers here at the nursery since around the 4th or 5th of the month! Earliest ever for me! I am putting out more feeders today 🌞 I looked back at past blogs to track their arrival over the past years and 10 years ago, almost to the day, I posted about having our first at the feeders. I took a screenshot of the 2010 blog 😊 👇🏻

10 years ago almost to the day! I love the timing of nature!

Once they get here, it’s officially Spring!

Hummingbird plants along with your feeders really draw them in. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Here’s the nectar recipe again

Hummingbird Nectar recipe

4 parts Water
1 part Granulated Sugar

Mix/stir together in a pot. You can use Hot tap water to dissolve the sugar in the mix. Let it cool and pour it in your feeders. Boom 💥

PS: DON’T add red food dye. It’s bad for them…

Get those feeders out now! The Hummingbirds are back! ❤️

Yes! We have Hope!

Just a quick piece of advice from my viewpoint. Stop watching the news! The 24 hour news cycle will drag you down and steal your hope!

Instead, do something you don’t normally get to do while at home.. Do a puzzle! Play a board game ♟ Read a book 📚 Draw or paint 🎨 or go outside on the porch and listen to the birds sing 🐦

The birds are out in force feasting on seeds, berries & worms 🐛 It’s Springtime in Tennessee!

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –

And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.

 ~ Emily Dickinson

Stay positive and keep your hope. This will be over sooner than later ❤️

Staycations
stay·ca·tion • /ˌstāˈkāSHn/ • noun  INFORMAL
noun: staycation; plural noun: staycations; noun: stay-cation; plural noun: stay-cations
– A vacation spent in ones home rather than abroad.

A “Stay at home Vacation”? Sound familiar?
Well, you can’t go to Disney World right now, or out to eat or even to a movie! So, the way you look at it is ALL up to you… Lockdown or time off. Shelter at home, or a “Staycation”!

If you could take the family to Disney for the week, do you know what the average cost would be? Depending on how much discounting and coupons and deals you work out, expect to spend as much as $10,000.00! You keep the memories and the pictures of course.

– That my friends is another reason more and more people are Staycationing! They are putting in Water Gardens, swimming pools, patios, grilling stations, fire pits 🔥and creating Outdoor Living Space right in the comfort of their own backyard! And why not!? You can access and enjoy these areas day and night! They add to your daily enjoyment AND to your property value!

My personal Outdoor Living Area at night. The Pond is the centerpiece, surrounded by gardens both edible and ornamental with sitting and lounging areas, a Grilling station and a nice fire pit. I’m down for a “Staycation”! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Check out my new Video 👇🏻Please subscribe

I am doing remote designs during this critical period of social distancing. We can discuss ideas on the phone or through email. You can send me pictures of your backyard areas and I can develop ideas and work up sketch’s that you can ‘Ponder’ 😊 For the future. Hopefully the not to distant future 😎

Thanks for reading and watching! Stay safe! And enjoy your Staycation.

Adventures in Cooking 🍳

Most people are at home right now. Some by choice, but many more by order or strong suggestion… So, there’s a LOT of really clean houses 🙂 and LOTS of shrubs have been trimmed and lawns raked and made ready for the season. And everyone has started fixing their own meals… Cooking is back in style!
I LOVE to cook! I do most of the cooking for our family, so its nothing new to me… Whats new is the availability of things to cook… Have you been to the grocery store lately?! It’s an adventure! People bundled up, gloves and masks, not making eye contact… And almost nothing you wanted! Forget the list! Its get what you can when you find it.

What can I whip up for dinner with this? Hmmm!

OR maybe…

Tarantula Pâté anyone?

But seriously, you have to pretty much eat what’s in your fridge or cabinet. Being inventive can help put a meal together!

I came up with maybe my favorite omelet combo ever this morning! I used what I had in the fridge and it was honestly good!

I took pictures, like I do often 😊 Turns out this combo is AWESOME! Nashville Hot Chicken and Jalapeno Pimento Cheese! Boom 💥

The next week or two will give us all some time to have some “Adventures In Cooking”!

Check out some of my dishes on my Pinterest page –

Sunday Reflections…

Beautiful morning! 🌞 We all got up together this morning and watched Sunday Morning together & I fixed breakfast. Nothing new, I always fix breakfast on Sunday Morning 😊 But this morning I took separate orders… Be careful what you ask for 😂

Homemade blueberry syrup and whipped cream for one (who couldn’t wait for the picture😃). #2 Eggs over easy on the side with a short stack – butter and real maple syrup. And finally, cheese grits with 2 egss over medium… That was me 😎

As you see, everyone ordered something different… No problem! It’s just nice to be able to fix what the ones you love really want!

”Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.

   ~ Marcel Proust

Have a great Sunday Morning!

Peace 🌱
