I have been asked a few times on the radio lately about composting, so I went back in the archives and pulled this up. This was 1st published over 10 years ago!
A big blowing storm just came through and left plenty of leaves đ to get us all started…
âFall is one of my Favorite seasons! Cooler weather, fall planting and gardening and all the great family gatherings and food are wonderful. Fall is also a GREAT time to start a Compost Pile. All those leaves, plants and grasses that you have to cut back and all of the upcoming holiday food scraps add up too a great supply of usable components in a compost pile!
Starting a Compost pile is quick , easy and wonât cost you anything to get started! Compost is one of natureâs best mulches and soil amendments and you can use it instead of chemical fertilizers. Compost improves soil structure, texture and increases the soilâs water-holding capacity. Compost loosens clay soils and helps sandy soils to retain water. The organic matter in compost provides food for microorganisms, which in turn keeps the soil in a healthy, balanced condition. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus are produced naturally by the feeding of microorganisms, so few if any soil amendments will need to be added.

Itâs easy to get started .
-Bag your grass clippings or mulch up all those leaves for the compost pile!
-Save those kitchen scraps and add them to the compost pile. Kitchen scraps are typically high in nitrogen, which helps heat up the compost pile and speed up the composting process. Egg shells, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels and scraps are good candidates for the compost pie. But DONâT add meat, grease or other animal products!
â With a compost pile, bigger is often better. Heat builds up with a bigger pile, but you donât want to get much bigger than about 3 feet by 3 feet, if itâs too big it can be hard to work around. Multiple piles may be in order .
â Aerate your compost! If you are composting with a pile, or in a static (non-tumbling) compost bin, be sure to mix up the contents so that the pile gets oxygen and can break down effectively. Turn it with a pitch fork from time to time .
â Donât let the compost completely dry out. A compost pile needs moisture to keep the composting process active , BUT , donât keep it too wet.
â Too much of any one material will slow down the composting process. If you have all leaves, all grass clippings or an overload of any other single type of material, it can throw off the balance of the pile. Itâs best to keep a balanced mix of green (nitrogen) and brown (carbon) materials.
When ready, this compost will be wonderful for the whole garden!
Good Luck and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!â

We have topped the peak of Fall Color and are flying down the slope over the hill… Leaves are comjng down now in earnest. I know I know, Ive said it before and Im not trying to be a bother, but a Leaf Net sure would save you a LOT of work!

Keeping the leaves and other fall debris out of your Pond is a good thing! Leaf debris is unsightly, it also quickly starts to decompose releasing many compounds that are bad for your fish. In turn algae is fed by the decomposing leaf matter and oxygen is depleted. ALL of these things combined can be catastrophic for the health of your finned friends, in heavy leaf fall areas, it can even kill them.
ALSO â in the Fall and Winter most of the aquatic plants are asleep, leaving very little cover for your Koi⊠Pond Predators, like Blue Herons strike most often in the Fall and Winter⊠BUT, Blue Herons canât get your treasured Koi through the Pond Netting! So thatâs another big plus for having a Pond Net!

Pond Tip Tuesday is all about helping YOU with your Pond Maintenance. Once you get a handle on it, you will enjoy your Pond and Waterfalls so much more!
Have a great day!

This has been a beautiful Fall day… It started with a cold heavy fog đ« needing a long sleeved shirt and coat & ended with a light sunburn in short sleeves đ A wonderful Autumn Day đ

So Beautiful â€ïž

It looks like a beautiful week ahead. I hope you can get out and enjoy this little âIndian Summerâ we are about to experience this week. Sunny đ with highs in the mid and upper 70âs.
âThere’s a crispness in the air that greets the morning sun, a feeling of anticipation, a new day has begun.
Harvest days are ending, winter is drawing near, yet in between is surely the most special time of year.
They call it Indian Summer, and it seems to fit the bill, for it’s as if the Lord took a feathered brush and painted all the hills.
Now as I sit contented, atop of one of these, a book in hand to pass the time, the sound of a gentle breeze,
I can almost imagine an Indian child upon this mountaintop, looking down at the land of her forefathers, lost within her thoughts
For in every persons lifetime some heartache may occur, but on these hills in quiet solitude, God helps us to endure.
So I say that the eyes are a window, beauty is found within the soul, and upon the hills of Autumn, that are strewn with red and gold.â

Here we are, Fall is in Peak Color in TN! Frost has become the norm over the last few days and Tonight, we set our clocks back! đł

Heres a little copy/paste from the interweb…
âWhen did Daylight Saving Time begin? Daylight Saving Time started on Sunday, March 14, 2021 and will end on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021 â a run of 238 days. It has begin the second Sunday in March and lasts until the first Sunday in November since 2007.â
A few other interesting facts…
- Many still love the practice because of longer Spring and Summer evenings!
- They say it does make driving safer
- And some say it saves a small amount of energy? Thats debatable…
- But, it also causes some people problems…
- Many loose sleep and find the change unhealthy. Physically and Mentally (depression from shorter evening hours)…
But, no matter how we feel about it, DST ends tomorrow! Be ready or, be the only one at church âȘïž đđđ»
Enjoy this last evening of 6pm sunsets đ ! Tomorrow it will be Dark by 5pm…. đŹ
Enjoy the weekend!

The Fall color show is really starting to unfold đđđ I LOVE the Fall Landscape… The color and texture of the sumac always gets it started. Then slowly but surely all the other native trees follow suit! My favorites are always the Dogwoods and Red maples, along with the sassafras, Black Gum, Hickory and Sugar Maples… Its just so beautiful đ€© But the color fades, the leaves fall and many will find their way into your Pond.

There are several types of nets as you know â Leaf nets, Koi Nets, Skimmer Nets, etc⊠But a general purpose Pond âDipâ Net is what Iâm talking about! They are perfect for fishing those 2 or 3 leaves off the bottom of the pond. Or if you drop something in the pond and need to get it out â youâll need a dip net to grab it. They are perfect for getting a piece of gravel out of the bottom of the skimmer too!

Inexpensive and invaluable! Add one to your Pond Tools. You wonât be sorry đ
Have a great âPond Tip Tuesdayâ!

What a beautiful morning! A quick, early walk this morning was perfect! Leaves are really showing color now đ and many are falling in good number… Its about time for a good early Fall clean-up and burn đ„ It really helps clear the way for later in the season.
Then its back in the house for breakfast đ„ đł No brunch today! Too much to do and see outside on this gorgeous Fall Day! đđđ

Only 1 week from today is Halloween đ… Get out and look around before the show is over!
âOctober is the month for painted leaves. Their rich glow now flashes round the world. As fruits and leaves and the day itself acquire a bright tint just before they fall so the year near its setting. October is its sunset sky; November the later twilight.â
