Hump Day Koi Story | Could My Koi Be Lonesome? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Hump Day Koi Story | Could My Koi Be Lonesome? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I was thinking about a lady who came in a few weeks ago to look at some Koi. She has been here several times over the years and has became a regular customer during the season. She told us that over the winter she was visited by a Blue Heron… And you guessed it, it ate all her Koi – all but One! Her lone Koi has started to eat again now, but not like he used to… She described him as lethargic & almost disinterested in eating or swimming around and exploring. She said she was thinking about getting him some friends because she thinks he is lonely 😞 Then she asked me, “Can Koi get lonesome”?

Koi are definitely social creatures in my opinion. They seem to get along well and I’m almost certain they benefit from the company of other fish | Hump Day Koi Story | Could My Koi Be Lonesome? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson,
Tennessee

I really enjoyed talking with her about this as we picked out 5 additional Koi to introduce to her Water Garden.

The rest of the story! – We spoke a few days later when she stopped by to grab a couple of bags of Koi Food. Her report was Awesome! The new fish acclimated well and started eating immediately! Her original Koi had warmed right up to the new guys and started eating like he was hungry again! To me that’s proof enough that Koi benefit from  companionship. So do we 😊 Now she too, has several more new friends ❤️ Koi = Love!

Happy Pondering 🤔

Your “Hump Day” Koi Fix – WHAT Does A Koi Pond Symbolize ? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I ❤️ Koi! And of course I ❤️ Koi Ponds too 😊

Lately I’ve been studying Kanji & symbolism in Japan. Last Wednesday I wrote about how the Kanji for Koi & Love are 1 in the same… 😊 I LOVE that! Koi also symbolize several other things in Japanese culture that are worthy of note!

Swimming koi represent advancement and determination. Fish symbolize wealth & surplus!

In the Koi Pond, the synergy of the Koi & the Pond & the Waterfalls come together & Love & Friendship are manifested.

This is the Kanji for Koi as well as the Kanji for Love.

This Kanji means Friendship.

Tomorrow is Valentines Day, a day made for Love & Friendship! We could start a new tradition – Take that special someone to the Koi Pond on Valentines Day 😊 I better not get too carried away, but I thought it was a great Segway between the two…

I really enjoy learning more about the Japanese culture! And I always Love learning more about Koi & Koi Ponds 😊 I have forged many friendships around Koi Ponds! So cool! I truly ❤️ My Job!

Have a great day & enjoy your Koi!

PS: Happy Valentines Day Eve…

Happy Pondering 🤔

If You Don’t Like The Weather, Just Wait a Few Minutes…

It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring- And that old tune is right on the money today! WOW what a storm! 40+ mile an hour winds too… But the kicker comes tonight!

This is so true! The weather is changing today! Thunder storms and high winds with temps in the upper 50’s will change over the next several hours to an ice and snow mix with temps in the LOW 20’s! 😲

I think one of the most important things to remember is our pets. The temps are gonna go LOW & will stay that way for several nights – and they will need a little shelter.

We’re gonna be cold for the next couple weeks. Don’t forget – If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.

Stay warm folks! And have a Great Weekend!

Winter Temps Are Re-Tweeting – Be ready | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

It happens every year – The weather moderates and we all feel like it’s almost Spring – Then, out of nowhere an arctic blast comes blowing in… and Its so easy to be caught off guard. I’m sending this little reminder to hopefully, help you be ready 😊

To Do –

  •  Winterize garden hoses, again…
  • Get your pets taken care of! They depend on us to take care of them & keep them warm 😊

It’s fixing to get COLD! Take care of your pets! If it’s too cold for you – it’s too cold for them…

We’re gonna be cold off and on for the next couple weeks. Don’t forget – If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.

Pond Owners Survival Kit –

– Have a dry hose available “just in case”! And I always have an adapter for my sink faucet. It helps to really be prepared for a BAD cold spell!
– Have a 5 gallon bucket set aside just for your pond. That bucket can really come in handy if you just need a little water or need a trash pail to clean up some leaves damming up the stream or waterfall!

FAQ #1 – What do I do if my Pond freezes?

ICE SAFETY: #1 NEVER, NEVER, NEVER break the ice by banging on it! It can cause your fish to go into shock! To allow the escape of gas & exchange oxagen, keep a hole open in front of the skimmer or on the ponds surface if you don’t have a skimmer. This is IMPORTANT!!! It will keep the gases from building up under the ice and suffocating your fish. This will also allow the pump to get water if surface is frozen. You can also keep a hole open by use of a floating De-Icer or by adding warm water from a water hose, bucket or pan of water. (If you use your water hose be sure to drain it when finished-to keep it from freezing and bursting, or keep it in your garage)

If you turn your pond off in a bad freeze, use a floating heater/de-icer to maintain a hole in the ice to exchange gases/oxygen for your fish’s health and well being. You can purchase a floating pond heater at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio.

Also, there is Good Stuff Too 😊

WINTER BEAUTY: Leaving your waterfall running all season in our part of the country is not a bad thing. As matter of fact, it will give you some beautiful photo ops. During the fall & winter birds love to come to your pond to drink fresh water, and in winter months, the running water will make some breath taking natural ice formations/sculptures. So keep your camera handy. And get some close ups. BUT – be sure to watch out for ice dams! These can cause your pond to lose some excessive amounts of water. If this happens add water back in to your pond with that dry hose we talked about earlier to bring your water levels back up.

Snowy, icy weather brings the birds to your Pond & to your feeders! They come all day to get a drink and even bathe. I LOVE to photograph birds in our landscape and at our feeders! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Birds come all day long to get a drink and even bathe. Try setting up some feeders in your viewing area and watch them flock to food & the WATER!

I hope this helps! If your prepared, a winter ❄️ storm ian enjoyable, beautiful event.

Happy Pondering!

Winter Temps Are Coming! Be ready 😊 | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

It happens every year – That first freeze comes in, and Its so easy to be caught off guard. I’m sending this little reminder to hopefully, help you finish getting ready 😊

To Do –

  •  Get in/put up tender plants.
  • Winterize garden hoses.
  • Winterize Sprinkler Systems.
  • Cut back aquatic plants.
  • Install Leaf Net on Pond!
  • Get your pets household in order! They depend on us to take care of them & keep them warm 😊

LOW TEMP. WATER TREATMENTS & LOW TEMP BACTERIA treatments should be used until the water temp. reaches 32 degrees. This will keep the bacteria active in your pond and promote healthier water for your fish during a longer period of time. In Spring, as water temps return to 40 degrees you may start the bacteria again. However this will not mean you no-longer need to clean your pond in the Spring because you will still have fish waste and plant debris in your pond that needs to be removed.

Come by Carters Nursery Pond & Patio and get your cold temp. pond products, like – cool temp. bacteria, cool temp. fish food, pond thermometers, floating pond heaters, seasonal decoys, dipping nets and more!

I really hope this helps you to get ready! I have learned to enjoy every season with my Water Features and my best advice to you is : Be Ready! Winter is Coming!
