Carter's Water Garden

Pond Tip Tuesday | It’s October🍁Time For Our Annual Fall Pond Checklist | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Fall is in full season! Each year I try to post some seasonal Pond Tips. So here we go…

Fall will bring many changes to our Gardens and Ponds, its important to stay ahead of the game!

I always try to post proactive things you can do to keep your Water Garden clean and your Koi healthy over the Fall & Winter.
Things like –

  • Cutting your aquatic plants back
  • Installing pond netting
  • Keeping your skimmer clear
  • Using Cold Water Bacteria
  • Feeding Cool Temp Koi Food, etc.
We stock a complete line of Water Treatment Products and supplies for your Pond and Water Garden. Including Cold Temp Beneficial Bacteria, Leaf Nets and Cool Season Fish Food | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

We stock bulk Leaf Netting at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio in Jackson, TN | It will keep debris out of your pond & help protect your fish from predators during the cold, bare months.

Pond Netting is a great tool to help keep the maintenance of your Water Garden or Koi Pond down to a minimum over the fall and winter. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Switch to Cold Water Bacteria NOW! –

Our Cold Water Beneficial Bacteria works and keeps on working when the plants and fish aren’t active and really helps the quality of your Pond Water! It is extremely effective at reducing sludge, dead and decaying leaves and plants, built up fish waste & excess nutrients like ammonia, nitrates & phosphates. These things make for poor water quality, reduced water clarity and can have catastrophic effects on your fishes health.

REMEMBER! Keep an 👁 on Your Skimmer!

Your Pond skimmer is a workhorse this time of year! Its catching and capturing all that debris that would otherwise end up on the bottom of your Pond! BUT, you have to empty it often in the Fall

Or, you end up with this

* Every Pond should have a floating Pond thermometer! Our finned friends are cold blooded & water temperature is very important when it comes to seasonal feeding times. Pick one up at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio.

This is standard equipment in every Koi Pond and Water Garden. Grab a Floating Pond Thermometer at Carters Nursery Pond & Patio today.

My final Pond Tip for today,

  • Switch to Cool Season Koi Food NOW…
When the water temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit you should switch to a Lower Protein, Cool Season Koi Food. We like to call it the ‘Rule Of 60’… | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Well, there you have it, a little reminder to help keep the Maintenance to a minimum and to maximize the enjoyment of our wonderful hobby!

🍁 Viva La’ Fall 🍁

Happy Pondering!

Sunday Reflections…

I’ve been looking at pictures from my recent trip and thinking about how Awesome it is that plants and animals know when we are going to have a big cold snap in Winter, or a hot dry Summer… Old school prognosticators have read plant and animal signs forever to forecast the coming of Winter, and it is very accurate!

Reading the orange band on the Woolley Bear will tell how severe and snowy the winter will be.

I wonder if people down in Florida use the Manatee as a source? If not, I think they might be missing something… Florida just experienced a record setting cold snap including freeze and frost warnings all the way down to Miami 😳 BUT, somehow the Manatee’s knew it was coming…

Those are Manatees that made the trip to Blue Spring in Florida to weather the Cold 🥶 Its a thermal spring that stays around 72 degrees F. There were over 650 of them here when i took this picture! A HUGE record #! Somehow they knew.

We don’t have survival instincts like that… We have to learn how to live and survive in a changing world… Pretty cool 😊

What I do know is that Spring follows Winter! Spring is Coming! I have been consumed with thoughts and planning for the coming season. I don’t know about you, but I am so ready to get my hands back in the dirt!

It was 17 degrees this morning… But by mid week we will be close to 70!!! Boom 💥 Bring it!

“He knows no winter, he who loves the soil,
For, stormy days, when he is free from toil,
He plans his summer crops, selects his seeds
From bright-paged catalogues for garden needs.
When looking out upon frost-silvered fields,
He visualizes autumn’s golden yields;
He sees in snow and sleet and icy rain
Precious moisture for his early grain;
He hears spring-heralds in the storm’s ‘ turmoil
He knows no winter, he who loves the soil.”

~ Sudie Stuart Hager

Have a great Sunday 🙏🏻

We May ALL Get Frosted on 4/20 💨

Hot, then cold, then windy then SNOW ❄️ Then FROST… WHAT? Yes, you heard me right! Gardeners prepare! Your about to get FROSTED on 4/20!

Break out the sheets and burlap! 4/20 is here and its bringing a CLOUD of COLD weather!

Things we can do –

  •  Bring in potted plants
  • Cover tender plants with sheets and/or plastic!
  • Cover veggies 🍅 🌶  🌽
  • IF you have an irrigation system, time it to come on before sunrise and run till after. The thermal properties of water are amazing.
  • We can’t change the weather, but we can be prepared!

We have to move all tender plants back in the cold frames and cover all sorts of things… I even cover my Japanese Maples!  Lots to do, but it’s worth the effort! This has been an eventful weather year, but fret not! We will get past this & see smooth sailing soon 🌞

Even if 4/20 is a holiday for you, you need to be ready! Cold temps, snow and possible frost are in your forecast, starting tonight😳

It always pays to be ready when you live in West Tennessee! Crazy weather… But hey, it’s Springtime in Tennessee! So we got that goin for us!

Have a great day & be ready! You have been warned…

Our Annual April 1st. ‘Chilly Willy’ Plunge is ON!!!

“As Per Tradition”, we, the “Distinguished Few” will meet at the “Big Pond”, at the Nursery to Take our Annual ‘Chilly Willy Plunge” exactly at sunrise, which is 6:41am in the morning! I am, SO! excited! 💥 Last years plunge was canceled by the “Pandemic”… But this year, IT… IS… ON!!! Tomorrow morning is the 1st day of the END of our ‘Mask Mandate as well! So feel free to come on out topless! You are still welcome to wear a mask of course, and we will make our respective plunges this year in smaller than normal groups as well. So Come on! Always a fun event! But, tomorrow mornings ‘CWP’ will be taken at a crisp, 27 degrees (+\-) Fahrenheit… A record low temperature! Can you say shrinkage 🥶

Get here early! Sunrise is 6:41am! You will need time to park and walk to the ponds edge. As you know, only about 15 people at a time have room to get in the pond comfortably. This year to make people more at ease in our “Social Distance’ world, we will limit it at 8 people per group plunge. The 1st group as always will be “first come, first in”! So I would get here early if you want to be in the official photo, that will probably be on the cover of the soon to be published Photo Book about unique activities in our area! 💥🍾

I will open the gates as early as possible so everyone can get a number and get in position. I recommend that you come dressed in your chosen ‘Plunge attire’, wearing a robe or heavy coat & water shoes or flip flops. Some have even worn Cover All’s that they unzip and step right out of. Remember, it’s gonna be COLD 🥶

REMEMBER – please RSVP so I will know how much coco and mimosas to have ready 👍🏻

  • Bring your own towels! 2 or 3 of them!

– Hot coco will be available.
PS: There’s a rumor that a ‘certain someone’, will be serving Mimosas for an epic Sunrise 🌅

Man, am I ready for this! 🌞 Viva La’ ‘Tradicion’!

Hee Haw y’all! See ya’ in the AM!

Mark C.

Are You Ready For Frost & Freezing Cold Thursday, Friday & Saturday Morning?

This is just a friendly warning to be ready… We have 2 nights of below freezing temperatures coming and 3 mornings of probable frost! Be prepared!

Bring houseplants back inside. Cover tender plants with row covers, sheets or whatever you have available to protect them. Unhook and drain your hoses… It’s a lot of work, but worth it in my opinion.

Many peoples ornamental trees have started to emerge (Japanese Maples) as well as perennials and have even set out peppers and tender annual crops…

Things we can do –

  •  Bring in potted plants
  • Cover tender plants with sheets and/or plastic!
  • Cover veggies 🍅 🌶  🌽
  • IF you have an irrigation system, time it to come on before sunrise and run till after. Waters thermal properties are amazing.
  • We can’t change the weather, but we can be prepared!

I even cover my Japanese Maples!  Lots to do, but it’s worth the effort! This has been an eventful weather year, but fret not! We will get past this soon. Don’t you just LOVE Tennessee Weather 😊

Have a great day & be ready! You have been warned…
