Throwback Thursday at Carters Nursery, Pond and Patio

I LOVE #throwbackthursday! It’s a wonderful opportunity for meaningful memories. Like this one today.

My dad brought this Saucer Magnolia home many many years ago. It wound up in a special place in our Garden.

My dads friend George grew all kinds of trees up in McMinnville, TN. When dad saw these blooming, he knew he wanted one. He brought one home from a visit years ago for me to plant. We waited until the proper time and my Uncle Doug and me planted it here. It’s always a dependable bloomer and a harbinger of Spring.
This throwback is also special because we just recently lost Uncle Doug to Covid. Seeing this picture today, really gave me a special memory. Thanks Shannon 😊

Have a great #throwbackthursday ❤️

Sunday Reflections…

The daffodils 🌼 are blooming! The daffodils are blooming!

Nothing says Spring more than blooming Daffodils 🌼

Everywhere I look I’m seeing Spring! 🌼 I feel a fog lifting off my brain this time of year. I guess it’s the seasonal depression of winter leaving 🥶 But no matter what it is, I Love it! I watched the sun come up this morning and the birds love it as well! 😊 So much activity!
Well, it’s time for breakfast 🥞 Then, I’m out for the day! Enjoy the coming Spring!

“I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.”
~ William Wordsworth

Hello March! Hello Spring 💐 | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Tennessee

Yes! March is the 1st Month of Spring 💐 It’s also the month we “Spring Forward”, which I actually love ❤️ because I like to stay outside in the evenings after work… I know there are no more hours or time in the day, BUT, it’s always so nice to have the evenings back! March 1st is the 60th day of the year… And now is when the Magic starts to happen! The Daffodils and many other early Spring bulbs start blooming, along with other harbingers of the season like the ‘Yellow Bell’ Forsythia, Quince, Oriental Magnolias and so many other native trees and shrubs… We are entering the most exciting time of the year!

Nothing says Spring more than blooming Daffodils 🌼
There is something about seeing the Yellow Bells’ blooming that brings SPRING into sharp focus! Get ready, it’s Happening!
A Redbud (Cercis canadensis) in full Spring bloom. One of my favorite early Spring blooming trees | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN
Saucer’ Magnolia – (Magnolia × soulangeana). A harbinger of Spring! This one has been growing in my garden for decades! Sooo beautiful 🙂 | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

There’s only one thing that Spring brings that I don’t like…

Oh well… Ya’ gotta take the good with the bad sometimes! 😊

Have a good one!

Monday Morning Moment of Zen | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

This past couple of weeks tested us all a bit. Winter in all its glory… But now Spring is in our sights! And believe it or not, it’s coming quickly! So this morning I wanted to try to reassure you a bit with a video from early Spring last year. We are only a few weeks away from when this video was taken 😊

I can’t wait till I get to feed my babies again! And I can only imagine what they are thinking right about now…

Enjoy this little moment of zen! And just know that – Spring is Coming!

Pond Tips | Pond Tip Tuesday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

The days are getting longer! Spring approachith… Soon it will be time to start our pond maintenance crews to doing the yearly work of cleaning Ponds & Water Gardens for the season. People are already calling in to get their names on our maintenance list to insure they get their Ponds Serviced for the season! Its always exciting to get ready for another great year with our Koi Ponds and Water Gardens, and a proper Late Winter/Early Spring Pond Cleaning is the key to success!

if you want clean, clear water and healthy Koi, a good Spring Cleaning is paramount! Spring is coming quick!

To clean your Water Feature correctly, First pump clean water from your Pond into appropriate holding tanks, then capture & place your fish in the tanks. Then,  trim plants & clean debris, straiten & touch up rocks & gravel, break down and thoroughly clean all filters & flush and thoroughly wash the pond down well before refilling. Don’t forget to dose the new water with Pond detox! Very important!

Always, always, always detoxify your pond after a clean-out! We carry this product in stock at the Pond Shop at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio. Get a bottle BEFORE your cleanout 😊

After the Water Feature is thoroughly cleaned, re-filled, detoxed and running, carefully place the fish back in the pond & start adding fresh Cold Temperature Bacteria to the Pond to get the system up and running correctly.

After a clean-out , we recommend you start adding Beneficial Cold Water Bacteria right away. Add by label instructions and after you have used the full bottle of Cold Water Formula, it will probably be time to switch over to regular Beneficial Bacteria. Get all your Water Feature Treatments at Carters Nursery.

We clean a LOT of Water Features for our Clients. But many do their own clean out.

For the all the DIY’s out there, here’s a little checklist to help you be ready. My experience has taught me that projects of any type benefit from advanced planning. Having all the necessary supplies on hand before you get started always makes it go faster and easier.

HELPFUL TIP: it’s good planning to get your Aquatic Plant fertilizer tabs now, BEFORE draining your pond and then realizing you should have got them when you bought your low temp bacteria and dechlorinator. This keeps you from running to the store in the middle of your clean-out (which can mean a whole day of work instead of a half day) and it allows you to fertilize your plants while the pond is drained instead of later when the pond is full again.

Planning ahead a little just means you can spend less time working on your pond and more time ENJOYING it!

1. Fish Nets – Before you drain your pond for the spring clean-out, you’ll need to catch and relocate your fish. Purchasing a good quality net means doing this without injuring your fish during the catch and release.

2. Planting Pots – Spring clean-out is a great time to thin and divide plants that have grown out of bounds or crowded a pot. Make sure you have some aquatic plant pots & aquatic plant soil handy so you can re-pot and share your new plants with other water gardeners.

3. Extra Gravel – After the freeze and thaw of winter, you’ll inevitably find rocks and gravel that have shifted, exposing bare liner. With an extra bag or two of gravel, you can cover exposed liner in a jiffy.

4. Aquatic Plant Fertilizer – Take advantage of the water-free accessibility of water lilies, lotus, and other plants that may need to be fertilized, by having a container of aquatic plant fertilizer tabs on hand when you’re doing your pond clean-out.

5. Container for Plant Debris – Grab an old plastic plant pot or bucket so you can easily dispose of any debris that you gather from the pond bottom or from dead plant matter.

6. Rubber Gloves and Boots – Spring clean-outs can be cold, wet, and messy. Arming yourself with boots and gloves will go a long way toward making this chore much less unpleasant.

7. Fish Container – A large tub or tank will be needed so you can have a roomy place to keep your fish during the clean-out. Use water from the pond to fill the tank and use a small fountain pump to re-circulate the water.

8. Net to Cover the Fish Container – Fish, especially large Koi, jump, and they may very well jump right out of the container that you have set up for them. Be sure to cover it with a net that is pulled tight across the container to prevent them from jumping.

9. Pump and Discharge Pipe – To drain the water out of the pond, you will need a pump and some discharge pipe. It’s OK to use your pond pump, but even better if you have an extra pump to lessen the wear and tare on your pond pump. About 2,000 GPH, depending on the size of your pond, will do the trick.

10. High Pressure Nozzle – Use a pressure nozzle on your garden hose to dislodge debris and algae from the rocks.

11. Pond Detox – Always detox the newly filled pond before you put the fish back in.

12. Expanding Foam – Expanding foam may need a bit of a touch up in some areas. Be prepared with a can of it just in case.

13. New Filter Mats – Filter mats should be replaced approximately every 3 years. If you think it might be time, be prepared by purchasing replacements prior to your clean-out.

14. Pruners – Part of a spring clean-out is pruning back dead plant material from the previous season. Make sure you have a good pair of pruners and/or scissors to get the job done.

15. Plastic Rake – You can rake the leaves right out of your pond with a small plastic (child’s) rake. The plastic lessens the chance of damaging the liner and the small size makes it easier to maneuver in tight spots than an adult size rake.

With a little work you will be ready for a Great outdoor season.

It won’t be long now! Spring is Coming!

Have a great day!

Groundhog Day! | Shadow or No – Spring IS Coming!

What a beautiful, sunny morning! 🌞 It’s Groundhog Day! Guess what… I saw my shadow! You know what that means, yep, I need to loose a few pounds…

You think that groundhog is chunky… Beware of your own shadow…

Old Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning as well… What does that mean? Well, if you trust the worlds most famous rodent prognosticator, it means 6 more weeks of Winter 🥶

If ground-hog day was bright and fair, The beast came forth, but not to stay; His shadow turned him to his lair, Where six weeks more, he dormant lay Secure in subterranean hold— So wondrous weatherwise was he— Against six weeks of ice and cold, Which, very certain, there would be… ~H.L. Fisher, “Popular Superstitions,”

Folks, no matter what the weather rat 🐀 says, Spring is still March 20th. this year no matter what! And that’s good with me! That means I still have time to get all the February chores done. Still time to enjoy a fire or three with my family. Still time to enjoy the pre-Spring landscape – Before Spring really hits! To me this is a reminder – Spring is Coming! Rejoice & Be Happy! 😉

Sunday Reflections…

This year already seems to be in high gear 🏎 tomorrow is February 1st! Wow 😳 That means Tuesday is Groundhog Day… The halfway point till official Spring ☘️ I don’t know if it was the restrictions of last year, but I already have the worst case of “Spring Fever” that I remember!

Spring is Coming!
I can’t wait to plant my garden this year!!!

”It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want—oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!

~ Mark Twain

Have a great Sunday!

Sunday Reflections…

I’ve been trying to get my house and garden in order for the upcoming Spring season. Many think there isn’t much to do outside this time of year, but for a professional gardener, the chores are never done… In my reality, there are only a few football 🏈 games left before the Spring season really gets started!

Emerging flowers whisperer Spring is Coming 🌼

“The shortest day has passed, and whatever nastiness of weather we may look forward to in January and February, at least we notice that the days are getting longer.  Minute by minute they lengthen out.  It takes some weeks before we become aware of the change.  It is imperceptible even as the growth of a child, as you watch it day by day, until the moment comes when with a start of delighted surprise we realize that we can stay out of doors in a
twilight lasting for another quarter of a precious hour.”

~ Vita Sackville-West

Enjoy your day!

PS: Go Packers! 🏈

Sunday Reflections…

Just a couple more weekends of football will take us into February, then we will start to notice the signs… swelling buds, emerging tips of spring foliage & the crappie will be biting in earnest! I don’t know about you, but I’m already ready for Spring!

My saucer Magnolia – Magnolia X soulangeana is dying to burst open! Many years, it blooms too early and gets bitten by late frost. Hopefully not this year 🤞🏻

Shoots are thrusting through the cold earth, ‘Tho the wind is in the north;Look! The snowdrop, crocus, scilla Struggle, bravely, to come forth!
Soon each fragile, gentle, blossom Will appear, to cheer each way,Hearts will gladden at their promise,Of clear, fresh, sunlit, springtime days!
       ~ Greta M. Sears

Have a great Sunday!

PS: It’s a Beautiful day! 🌞
