Hump Day Koi Story – It’s 10 Degrees Outside! Will My Koi Survive? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Man it’s COLD! WOW! I walked out to check on my Water Garden a few minutes ago ❄️ Folks, it’s Cold out there! I was at a full trot by the time I made it back to the door 😳 My dogs were even ready to come back in!

Scout and Ranger were both fully dressed, so I don’t think they got as cold as I did 😇 LOL!

Good News! My Water Garden is doing fine! My Koi have assumed the position “Hovering at the bottom” as usual this time of year… So, alls well with the Pond 😊They are just like me, waiting for Spring!

But, I still get a few calls every year when it gets ‘Really Cold’ outside, especially when you see some icing, and it’s almost always the same few questions, with #1 lately (today) being, “Will my Koi be ok in Cold like this’? First, let me say – What a considerate question! People LOVE their pets 😊 So, let me give you the good news… Yes! Your Koi will survive this cold snap and will be just fine!

Koi are cold blooded (Poikilothermic) fish, In the wintertime, their metabolism slows to a crawl. They can usually be found at the bottom of the pond, hovering, ie: treading water. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson,
Tennessee

There are a few things that you can do to help them through a cold snap! # 1 is – IF your Pond tries to freeze – Keep a hole open in the ice! This should be a preventative measure and hopefully not a reactionary one…

If you turn your ponds pump off in a bad freeze, use a floating heater/de-icer to maintain a hole in the ice to exchange gases/oxygen for your fish’s health and well being. You can purchase a floating pond heater at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio.

There are a LOT of articles on this BLOG that will help you with your Water Garden & Koi! But, to cover today’s question/concerns, Your Koi will be OK 👌🏻

Stay warm! Remember- Spring is Coming!

Cool Season Beneficial Bacteria | Carter’s Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

These last few weeks I have been blogging about proactive things you can do to keep your Water Garden clean and your Koi healthy over the Fall & Winter. Things like – Cutting your aquatic plants back, pond netting, watching your skimmer more closely, feeding Cool Temp Koi Food, etc. – There’s another very important thing you can do to really keep your ecosystem active and working well – Switch to Cool Season Beneficial Bacteria!

Change to Cool Season Beneficisl Bacteria now and it will help to keep your your pond clean f& you’re Koi healthy. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Our Cool Season Pond Bacteria works in cold water. It keeps on working when the plants and fish aren’t active and it really helps the quality of your Pond Water! It is extremely effective at reducing sludge, dead and decaying leaves and plants, built up fish waste & excess nutrients like ammonia, nitrates & phosphates. These things make for poor water quality and reduced water clarity and can have catastrophic effects on your fishes health. Stay ahead of the game and use Cool Temp Beneficial Bacteria! You can thank me later 😊

Happy Pondering!

Already missing the snow…

The snow has completely melted now… Up until late last night there was still a little bit and I thought it might be “waiting around on some more” 🙂 But, no such luck… I love Spring & Summer! But I also LOVE the beauty of Winter & the snow! I also LOVE the anticipation of Spring that the melting of the snow brings 🙂

Here is my beautiful, blooming Water Garden in Summer. Your welcome to come by and see it during business hours at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Here is the same Water Garden in Winter. No blooms, but still BEAUTIFUL! |Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I Do a Spring/Summer & Fall Water Garden/Pond tour every year. I’ve always wanted to do a Winter Pond/Garden tour too… BUT, I don’t know if it’s possible? To many risk factors perhaps. In any case, I hope you enjoy these pictures and this short video of the Pond.

Happy Pondering!

Summer & Winter from a view.

I’ve thought a lot about how I enjoy my Water Features throughout the seasons lately. I have finally come to the conclusion that I enjoy them all equally, for different reasons… Spring and Summer are a no-brainer. There is so much to do outside! It feels so good outside! The birds are singing and the sun is shining! etc. etc…

The Spring and Summer Water Garden draw you outside to enjoy!

But, as I reflect on my gardens and my water features – that’s true of Fall & Winter too! It’s 9 degrees outside right now, and guess what – The sun is shining brilliantly & the birds are out in force trying to get a drink… My view point is sometimes through the window, but all the life that WATER draws to it, never stops coming! The birds and squirrels are still thirsty and even want to bathe. AWESOME!

Birds come all day long to get a drink and even bathe. Try setting up some feeders in your viewing area and watch them flock to the WATER!

So get out if you can, if not open up the blinds and see what nature is serving up today – It’s Amazing!
