Good Morning! This morning is the last morning of late Summer… tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox, ie; The 1st day of Fall đ
Fall will bring many changes to our Gardens and Ponds, its important to stay ahead of the game!
I always try to post proactive things you can do to keep your Water Garden clean and your Koi healthy over the Fall & Winter. Things like â Cutting your aquatic plants back, using pond netting, watching your skimmer more closely, feeding Cool Temp Koi Food, etc. â Thereâs another very important thing you can do to really keep your ecosystem active and working wellÂ
â Switch to Cool Season Beneficial Bacteria!
We stock a complete line of Water Treatment Products for your Pond and Water Garden. Including Cold Temp Beneficial Bacteria | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN
Our Cold Water Beneficial Bacteria works and keeps on working when the plants and fish arenât active and really helps the quality of your Pond Water! It is extremely effective at reducing sludge, dead and decaying leaves and plants, built up fish waste & excess nutrients like ammonia, nitrates & phosphates. These things make for poor water quality, reduced water clarity and can have catastrophic effects on your fishes health.
The next piece of âLow Hanging Fruitâ im going to serve up is this : Every Pond should have a floating Pond thermometer đĄ Our finned friends are cold blooded & water temperature is very important when it comes to seasonal feeding times. Pick one up at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio today.
This should be standard equipment in every Koi Pond and Water Garden. Grab one at Carters Nursery today…
The last Pond Tip for today is this – âOur Koi have eaten well this year & have put on a good bit of fat to get them through the Cool Season ahead. Now is the time that many of my clients and fellow Koi enthusiasts start asking a very important questionâŚ
â When do I stop feeding regular food and start feeding Cool Season Koi Food?
When the water temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit you should switch to a Lower Protein, Cool Season Koi Food. We like to call it the âRule Of 60â⌠| Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN
Switching to a Cool Temperature Koi Food is very important for the health of your Koi!
Well thats enough for today đ I just want you all to be ready with the tools and things you need to easily succeed during the changing of the seasons.
Tomorrow is the start of a new Season! Are You ready for some Fall? đ đĽ đ
Thats a VERY important question! I mean, literally half of every day is either going into or coming out of darkness… The vast majority of us work during âbusiness hoursâ, which means most of our free time is in the evening or at night! đ So, let me ask you again, Do you enjoy your Garden at Night?!
Wow right! imagine something like this beautiful Waterfall being the âfocal pointâ of your Garden… I bet you would spend a lot more time outside away from the TV đ

Good Morning đ Itâs always nice to start the week off on a positive note and there is none any better to me than watching the Koi swim and eat đ And listening to the Waterfalls, Their happiness is mine as well⌠Itâs easy to relax and find that moment of ZenâŚ
I love my Pond! And I love interacting with it! The fish, the frogs, dragonflies, plants, etc.. All of it! Heck, I even love tending to my Water Garden đ This time of the season, I usually cut things back a bit, fertilize my Waterlilies and Lotus plants and do a good physical removal of excess string algae in and around the Waterfalls. Believe it or not, I get great joy from it⌠And when I sit down and look at the freshness of the newly cleaned, âMid season Pondâ I get that feeling of satisfaction⌠A very Zen feeling. Check out my little video of me cleaning the excess string algae off the Waterfall. Maybe you will see what I mean đ
I always tell people that when you get your own Pond & Waterfall, that you really get 2 Ponds. You get the daytime feature with flowers and crystal clear water, glinting and reflecting the sun đ So beautiful! But you also get the Nighttime Pond! And man oh man! đ Hereâs a quick video of my âNighttime Pondâ… It will be featured in our upcoming Moonlight Pond Tour đ in September. I hope to see you there!
This is such a beautiful evening! Iâm going to sit out here for a while and just breathe…
Water features are popping up everywhere and it seems everyone wants a backyard Pond or Water Feature.
Water features come in many forms… Bubbling Fountains, Pondless Waterfalls, Ornamental Koi Ponds and so much more! My single biggest request is to design and install Custom Residential Watergardens and Ponds! Everyone wants their own personal Oasis! And Why Not? They add so much to your life. But remember, If itâs worth doing , itâs worth doing right.
Like any project you undertake , you should first do some research and gather info .
â First , look around at some local Water Features and talk to some people who have one in their life. Identify some interesting design elements that you like and may want to incorporate into yours. Streams, bridges, lighting, fish caves, waterfalls, jets, etc, etc…
â Go on a Pond Tour! Thereâs no better way to see some awesome Watergardens and talk to actual Pond owners than on a Pond Tour ! I have been on dozens of Pond Tours all over this country and thereâs no better way to learn about what its like to have a Waterfall in your own backyard than on a good Pond Tour! In fact, we have our Annual âMoonlight Pond Tourâ coming up on Saturday, September 18th.! See some gorgeous Ponds and Waterfalls with extensive night lighting. You will find Inspiration and ideas galore! đĽ
â If and when you need some help with your design, call a professional Pond Designer! When I need help outside of my Specialty, and I want something done right the first time, thatâs what I do. AND – Be choosy! Make sure your dealing with a qualified Waterfeature Specialist ( like a C.A.C. â Certified Aquascape Contractor ), PS: itâs probably NOT the guy mowing your grass… Check references! Look at Their work (older and more recent)! And Always get a written contract! I have successfully installed thousands of Water Features over the last 32 years and would be more than happy to help you in your quest for the perfect Backyard Water Feature!
Getting a Backyard Pond is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do for yourself!
I try to pass along helpful advice to help with your Ponds… Here is a blog post from a year ago that covers where we are in the season right now. I hope you like it đ
 Summer Pond Maintenance
My pond has been exceptionally beautiful this season! LOTS of lily blooms, the lotus have been showing out & there is so much lush foliage.
My Water Garden plants have been so beautiful this year! But to keep them looking great they need a little TLC | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee
One of the #1 things to do right now is keep your lilies & lotus fed (fertilized) to keep them performing into late summer and fall. Itâs very simple to do! Come by and grab a container of Aquatic Plant Fertilizer Tabs. One of us will show you how to poke emâ down into the root zone of the plant â Done!
AND #2 is to keep your aquatic plant growth in check! All this Hot weather has them growing like weeds đ
selectively trim marginal aquatics to keep in check and to promote strong compact growth.
remove yellowed unattractive Lilly pads & spent blooms to Promote new growth and bloom.
Keep Waterfalls & streams free and clear of excessive plant growth and debris! A plant dam will cause a leak every time!
Koi Love to be hand fed! If yours arenât eating from your hand yet, try feeding at the same time daily and have patience, it takes a little while to win them over, but once you do, it will be worth the effort đ Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee
â Enjoy your Koi! Feed them quality Koi food, but donât over feed! Over feeding can cause water quality issuesâŚ
A little touch up now will pay dividends for the rest of the season! Get out there and enjoy đ
When you walk up to a Koi pond you are immediately greeted by the Koi that live there. Who are you? What yaâ got for me đ Koi are very friendly. Jo took this short video of these Koi swimming through the lilies saying hi. Koi live in a perpetual state of Zen!
10 degree windchill this morning đĽśÂ Brrr! Ice Ice Baby! But, donât worry, it will be ok… Just donât break the ice!
Donât break the ice! It will harm your Koi! The powerful shock waves created by a blow to the ice can break their bones and rupture organs!
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER break the ice by banging on it! It can cause your fish great harm â it can even KILL them! To allow the escape/exchange of gasses in a frozen over pond, keep a hole open in the ice. This is IMPORTANT!!! It will keep the gases from building up under the ice and allow for oxygen exchange and keep your fish from suffocating. This will also allow the pump to get water if the surface is frozen. If you have a skimmer, this will be MUCH easier on you! The water movement will help keep the ice from forming. You may need to keep the hole open by adding water from a water hose, bucket or pan of water. (This is why I always say âkeep a dry hoseâ or a 5 gallon bucket for this purpose! If & when you use your water hose be sure to drain it when finished-to keep it from freezing and bursting, or just keep it in your garage). You can also use a floating pond heater or a small pump in a shallow area to âflash upâ and break the water surface. Just do it! đ
Itâs cold for a few days, but it will warm soon. Lets take care of our finned friends â¤ď¸
This time of year I get to really missing feeding time! The weather has been warm & the Koi very active, but itâs just not time… So I thought I would post a nice little video of the Koi swimming and the aquatic plants flourishing as a memory/dream of the coming season đ
Hump Day Dreaming đ
I LOVE feeding time as much as they do! And I canât wait until itâs time again! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee
