Throwback Thursday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Throwback Thursday is always fun! It seems like most of my Throwbacks have lots of meaning and importance to me… I guess that’s what makes them worth the time 😊 This one for sure! My son actually tee’d this one up for me today ❤️ He made a post on Facebook today that I’m using my for this Thursday’s Throwback, check it out 👇🏻

Jacobs post – “I’m part of an amazing Tribe! The word got out we were looking for some help on a Pond Squad build and 22 Certified Aquascape Contractors showed up on their own! We are shooting in Alabama and people came from Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and one couple drove all the way down from New Hampshire! I love what I do and the people I do it with! “ #pondsquad

This project was 5 years ago in Gulf Shores, Alabama and was hosted by Gulf Shores Aquascape (shout out to Motel and Buford!) Jacob was 13 years old at the time & was over the top Thrilled to able to go with his dad! But the BIG thrill was the fact that we would be working on the ‘New’ Gulf Coast Zoo project! 💥 A little backstory here – he has grown up loving the Gulf Coast Zoo! Nicknamed “The little Zoo That Could” after surviving Hurricane Ivan in 2005! The little zoo won worldwide love and acclaim and the donations started rolling in. The writing was on the wall. The Zoo must grow and must never face another disaster like Ivan again! Which meant, Relocation! Cut to 2015 and the 1st Water Feature was being installed in the New Zoo – “The Little Zoo That Grew” in its New Location! The Waterfalls and Landscape on ‘Spider Monkey Island’ was the first BIG Water Feature for the Zoo, and it was being installed by Professional Waterfall Builders (CAC’s) on a TV 📺 Show to boot! Jacob was strait up thrilled!

Spider Monkey Island turned out fantastic! Tens of thousands of people a season will enjoy this one for years to come 😊 Jacob has a lifetime pass to the Zoo, given to him by Joey, the owner for his help and dedication to the Zoo! 💥 So he’s got that going for him 😂

Here’s a picture from many years ago at the Little Zoo with Sita, a white tiger cub. He’s gotten to have many animal encounters over the years, but he really loves those Tigers!

Here he is at a much younger age, playing with a young Tiger Cub named Sita’. Jacobs love of the Gulf Coast Zoo runs deep 😊

After we finished the Zoo, we did the residential project pictured above with the group that worked on both. Here’s a cleaned up picture with the landscaping and mulching complete and ready for the “reveal” on TV.

Jacob, Shane and I got up early early the next morning, bought 50 bags of mulch and went back over to this one and did all the mulching and touch ups to be ready for the cameras. Things like this were great teachable moments for him! Attention to details and the last touch ups are the difference between a good job and a Great one!

Here he is learning a bit about how to operate a track hoe, at 13 years old! Yes, he’s experienced for a young un’!

Yep, he’s good sized for a 13 year old! You should see him now 👀 6’3” 225!

I hope I didn’t get too carried away 😊 It’s just, good memories are worth gold. Especially on #Throwbackthursday!

Have a great night!

Throwback Thursday | #throwbackthursday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Its “Throwback Thursday” again and I have a good one for ya… Here’s our team of CAC’s (Certified Aquascape Contractors) that went down to Epcot and built this totally Custom Water Feature for the International Flower & Garden Festival. We were there to show the world what was possible with Water Features in your own backyard. We did this several years in a row & I think it went a long way in educating the public on what was possible and that there are Trained, Certified Professionals that can help!

We all worked through the night for several nights to build this “One of a kind” Water Feature in Epcot. Over 1 million people saw this feature.

When you work in Disney parks, you work at night! Midnight to 8am to be exact. It’s a shock to the system, but totally worth it!

Here it is after clean up and landscaping. Quite the showstopper!

The reactions of the people who view Waterfalls are amazing! People laugh, hug, stare, cry & more. Waterfalls are unique and very special…

The International Flower 🌸 & Garden Festival is Awesome! It was an honor to go down and build Water Features with my fellow Pond Builders for so many seasons! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio

This is my offering for #throwbackthursday!

Waterfall Wednesday | Carter’s Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I posted about this Water Feature when it was newly built several years ago. This Large Pondless Waterfall was built by our CAC group (Certified Aquascape Contractors) at our annual Training Event in Illinois (Carter’s Nursery, Pond & Patio are Master CAC’s). This morning my son and I had breakfast by this Water Feature & I took this picture from my seat 😊 My contribution to #waterfallwednesday !

The Landscape has really filled in nicely. This feature looks and feels so Natural! | Carter’s Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Training and keeping up with new technology and techniques is all important if your to stay at the top of the game! That’s why we work at constant improvement! This year I took a very important person to this wonderful training event so he could grow and get better too.

My son Jacob is working in the business now! He grew up in and around the nursery & our family business, and is learning more and more every day 😊

Even Greater things are yet to come 🙏🏻

Have a Great Day! More updates coming soon…

Peers, Colleagues & Old Friends | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I had a Friend from the other side of the country stop in to say hi yesterday. Paul has been described as a “real Arizona cowboy” & I concur 😊 It was a very pleasant surprise indeed! We started out as colleagues/peers in the same business many years ago but became fast friends that have stayed in touch now for 20 years! We are both professional “Water Shapers”, ie: we both design and build  Water Features- Koi Ponds, Water Gardens, Streams & Waterfalls, etc… Over the years we became friends as did our wives & we watched each other’s kids grow up through pictures on Facebook and such… Pretty cool huh 😊

Here’s a great comparison shot from many, many years ago on the bottom when we built a Water Garden In Little Rock Arkansas for P. Allen Smith to the top picture from last night. 😊 Can you pick us both out in the bottom photo?

All these years and yesterday was the first time he had been to my place in Tennessee 😳 We went to dinner 🥘 and he said “take me somewhere local” – So we went to Brooksies Barn and had catfish, pulled pork, ribs & more. We walked in, but we ate so much that we limped out 😂

Brooksies is a one of a kind local joint with great food! Fried catfish, pulled pork bbq & frog legs are just a few of their specialties.

Visiting with old friends is a special thing! Especially when the friendship developed from professional respect for a colleague.

Aristotle said there were 3 types of friendships-

1- friendships of utility (useful to one another)

2- friendships of pleasure (you have fun and enjoy each other’s company)

3- friendships of the good (these are based on mutual respect and admiration. These friendships take longer to build than the other two kinds–but they’re also more powerful and enduring).

Paul, ours is definitely a type 3 😊 Friendship of the Good! But, we have had fun together & have worked together and been useful to one another too… Boom! Trifecta! Hat trick!

Great to see and catch up with an Old Friend!

Have a great day – and here’s to Good Friends!

Beautiful Pondless Waterfall | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

This Pondless Waterfall is located at an Event Center in the Chicagoland area. It was built a little over 2 years ago as a training event for Professional “Certified” Pond Builders, aka: CAC’s (Certified Aquascape Contractors) to learn more about Large scale water features. I am back in town for a yearly conference with my fellow CAC’s, (I am a Master CAC) and just had dinner out here by this feature and wanted to share it with all of you. The plants have all been updated and had time to fill in nicely. It turned out Beautifully! Check it out…

Will My Koi Get Trapped In My Skimmer? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee | Madison County TN

I had a customer come in to the Pond Shop yesterday needing help. He has had a Pond for several years now and is ready to make it lower in maintenance. He wants to put a skimmer on his Pond! He is a DIY guy and wants to install it himself and he wants to do it right. BUT, he has fish… Several are pretty good sized Koi and he is worried that the Pond Skimmer could be a problem… His #1 question was – “Will my Koi get trapped in my Skimmer Filter”?

One of the first things you need to do when choosing a Skimmer Filter for your Pond is to find out what size Skimmer you need.

The first thing I told him while answering his question was NOT to worry about the fish. It’s overwhelmingly NOT a problem. I showed him around the Ponds here at the Nursery & once he saw the simple operation of the system and how healthy & happy my Koi are he was a believer.

Then I asked him a few questions to figure out what type and size Skimmer would be best for his application.

  • I found out that he has a fairly large Pond/Water Garden, 3′ deep, with quite a few fish.
  • He has over 2,500 gallons of water in his system.
  • He has a fairly powerful pump – around 7,000 GPH (gallons per hour). The water from that pump splits and goes to 2 different Waterfalls.
  • His Pond has No bottom aeration.
  • We sketched out the pond from a couple of photos that he had on his phone and were able to quickly figure out what he needed.

He installed this Pond himself. It’s basically round in shape with 2 different Waterfalls. The pond is 3′ in depth & the upper shelf is approximately 1 to 1 1/2′ in depth. There is no stone in the pond and no gravel on the bottom… Which after he saw how we do it is about to change 😎 Seeing is Believing!

Not only did he need a Skimmer Filter, he needed a Plumbing upgrade! He had a mis-mash of plumbing pieces going to 2 waterfalls from a submerged pump in the bottom of the pond. So we specified 2″ flex PVC Plumbing AND we added a Check valve in there to make it easy for future maintenance. We also decided to install a 2 stone aeration system.

So easy to install! A simple Aeration System will make your pond healthier, your fish happier & will help with much needed dissolved oxygen for your finned pets.

And we specified a Top of the line Skimmer, with an adjustable faceplate,  a rigid debris basket and a removable weir (just in case his fish need some time to adjust to the new Skimmer).

This is the Cadillac of Pond Skimmers! With an adjustable faceplate, removable weir & rigid debris basket, the Signature Series 1000 Pond Skimmer by Aquascape Inc. has got you covered! | We are Master Certified Aquascape Contractors! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee.

Here’s a side view of his new Skimmer! When this is properly installed it will be virtually invisible & do most of the work throughout the year!

The Skimmer we chose has LOTS of room inside the basket, an adjustable faceplate, a removable weir and is a great choice if you have Koi. |  Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee.

He left ‘Carter Country’ a Happy Customer!😊 He purchased the Skimmer, plumbing, fittings & Aeration System plus 10 bags of gravel and set off to install his new Skimmer 🙂 He has promised to send me an after picture and a report on his installation. I will share it with y’all too. It makes me smile when I talk to a fellow Pond Enthusiast that is excited about the hobby and his Pond!

PS: IF you ever have a problem with Koi getting trapped in the skimmer (its only happened a few times in 30 years) – give me a call and I will help walk you through the “training process”. It’s really as simple as checking daily and shooing them out, they will get the point. It’s also a great idea to remove the weir flap from the skimmer faceplate until the new wears off for the fish IF your having issues.

Happy Pondering!

Friday Radio Report – Memorial Friday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

What a Great Show today! The vibe was cool and the callers were many! LOTS of questions today!

  • How to handle nut-grass in your lawn – Spray with selective herbicide like Manage or Image (these may be restricted use chemicals? So ask for something at your local garden center that is consumer friendly and labeled for Nutsedge ie; Nutgrass.
  • Is fish safe liner any different than normal EPDM? YES! Regular EPDM rubber is treated with chemicals that deter insects, etc. and is TOXIC to your fish! ALWAYS make sure to get “Fish Safe” liner for your Water Gardens to insure your fish’s health.
  • How to control Poison Ivy? I use Roundup! Make sure it has surfactant in it. It will really knock it down. BUT, you will probably have to spray it a few times over several weeks to insure a good kill.
  • How to get a Zoysia lawn without spending a fortune? Plugging is a cost effective way. Make sure to keep your plugs watered daily until really “nailed down” well! Then water weekly as needed for the first season. After the first year fertilize and spray well as you Zoysia spreads across your lawn.
  • Is it warm enough to spray MSMA now? Yes! AND discontinue 2-4D (it’s WAY to HOT)!
  • When is the Pond Tour? Saturday, June 23rd.!
  • When do I prune my Azaleas??? Now! Selectively Prune and fertilize! I use milorganite and Ironite and they look great!

We also talked a lot about the Memorial Day weekend. This is always the official weekend that kicks off the Summer Season! Camping, Hiking, Cookouts, Vacations, Boating, etc…! But lets remember that all this happiness and freedom that we look so forward to comes from the blood and sacrifice of soldiers who fought and died for all our freedoms! Don’t forget to thank God for their sacrifice and don’t forget to talk to our kids and teach them that ALL this freedom wasn’t free! It was purchased with the blood of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could live like this in happiness and freedom.

Remember
Someone’s child, left long ago,
A strange land,
Someone’s foe.
An unmarked grave, fields of green,
Resting quiet,
Just eighteen.
Winds of freedom, wash us now,
Remember him,
This I vow
~Victor C. Kleinschmit
