Winter Temps Are Coming! Be ready 😊 | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

It happens every year – That first freeze comes in, and Its so easy to be caught off guard. I’m sending this little reminder to hopefully, help you finish getting ready 😊

To Do –

  •  Get in/put up tender plants.
  • Winterize garden hoses.
  • Winterize Sprinkler Systems.
  • Cut back aquatic plants.
  • Install Leaf Net on Pond!
  • Get your pets household in order! They depend on us to take care of them & keep them warm 😊

We’re gonna be cold for the next couple weeks. Don’t forget – If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.

Pond Owners Survival Kit –

  •  Have a dry hose available “just in case”! And an adapter for your sink faucet if you really want to be prepared for a BAD cold spell!
  • Have a 5 gallon bucket set aside just for your pond. That bucket can really come in handy if you just need a little water or need a trash pail to clean up some leaves damming up the stream or waterfall!

FAQ #1 – What do I do if my Pond freezes?

ICE SAFETY: #1 NEVER, NEVER, NEVER break the ice by banging on it! It can cause your fish to go into shock! To allow the escape of gas & exchange oxagen, keep a hole open in front of the skimmer or on the ponds surface if you don’t have a skimmer. This is IMPORTANT!!! It will keep the gases from building up under the ice and suffocating your fish. This will also allow the pump to get water if surface is frozen. You can also keep a hole open by use of a floating De-Icer or by adding warm water from a water hose, bucket or pan of water. (If you use your water hose be sure to drain it when finished-to keep it from freezing and bursting, or keep it in your garage)

If you turn your pond off in a bad freeze, use a floating heater/de-icer to maintain a hole in the ice to exchange gases/oxygen for your fish’s health and well being. You can purchase a floating pond heater at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio.

Also, there is nothing like –

  •  WINTER BEAUTY: Leaving your waterfall running all season in our part of the country is not a bad thing. As matter of fact, it will give you some beautiful photo ops. During the fall & winter birds love to come to your pond to drink fresh water, and in winter months, the running water will make some breath taking natural ice formations/sculptures. So keep your camera handy. And get some close ups. BUT – be sure to watch out for ice dams! These can cause your pond to lose some excessive amounts of water. If this happens add water back in to your pond with that dry hose we talked about earlier to bring your water levels back up.

Birds come all day long to get a drink and even bathe. Try setting up some feeders in your viewing area and watch them flock to the WATER!

LOW TEMP. WATER TREATMENTS & LOW TEMP BACTERIA treatments should be used until the water temp. reaches 32 degrees. This will keep the bacteria active in your pond and promote healthier water for your fish during a longer period of time. In Spring, as water temps return to 40 degrees you may start the bacteria again. However this will not mean you no-longer need to clean your pond in the Spring because you will still have fish waste and plant debris in your pond that needs to be removed.

Come by Carters Nursery Pond & Patio and get your cold temp. pond products, like – cool temp. bacteria, cool temp. fish food, pond thermometers, floating pond heaters, seasonal decoys, dipping nets and more!

I really hope this helps you to get ready! I have learned to enjoy every season with my Water Features and my best advice to you is : Be Ready! Winter is Coming!

Happy Pondering!

Lost and Found!

We seem to find our share of animals in need 😇 And sometimes in the darndest places!

We don’t know how this little guy found his way into our boat… But he was definitely lost!

When I first saw him hiding in my boat I actually thought it was a baby opossum 😮But instead it was a cute baby kitten that was very scared & very hungry!

He wouldn’t eat solid food, but lapped up some half&half 😊

After getting something in its belly he became a little socialite, visiting each one of us and being so sweet. We decided we had to find someone who wanted this little baby!

Almost immediately we had someone say they would love to take her. BUT, she had to talk to her grandkids and their parents…

This lovely lady called her kids about adopting this little kitten for her grandkids! GREAT NEWS! – They worked it out and took this little baby into their family 😊

I LOVE it when things work out with abandoned animals! This little baby kitten found a forever home! That’s a success story in my book! What was lost is found and all’s good in a little part of the world 😊

Have a Great Day!

Sunday Reflections…

I Love Sunday mornings! No better time to count your blessings and reflect on the miracles all around us…

“As for me, I know nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,
Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of the water,
Or stand under the trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with any one I love,
Or sleep in bed at night with any one I love,
Or watch honey bees busy around the hive of a summer forenoon…
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown,
Or of stars shining so quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new moon in spring…
What stranger miracles are there?”
–  Walt Whitman

Have a Blessed day!

If you know me or my family, you know we LOVE animals. We have always kept pets and fostered animals in need . Through our business we have raised money for our local Humane society for 20+ years too. All this love has really shaped my son Jacob. He is always ready to help an animal in need and does it on his own. Yesterday he and his mom saw this beautiful puppy running through traffic at rush hour. She was scared to death and confused, literally trying to get people to stop their cars to help her. Well, Jo & Jacob did just that!

Jo & my son Jacob saved this beautiful puppy from being ran over in the street. With the help of the Jackson Animal Care Center, an anonymous angel, Facebook & a local Vet we were able to find her owner & get her safely back home to her family.

With the help of some great local resources (Jackson Animal Care Center, a Local Vet & Facebook) we were able to find her family and reunite them in just over 1 day! WOW! We found out that Paloma is her name, she is just over a year old and is a big old sweetheart 🙂 Sometimes things work out right! Thank Goodness!

Like I said, “What a Lucky Dog”!

Have a GREAT Weekend!

My crazy dogs LOVE to dress for cold weather
January 6, 2018, 3:16 pm
Filed under: Outdoor Lifestyles | Tags: , ,

I’ve been doing a lot of Landscape photography over the last few days. All the freezing ponds and waterfalls have made for some great shots! My dogs are like our children & LOVE to go with me. My wife was so worried about them getting too cold outside in this freezing weather so she got sweaters for both of them… At first I thought how ridiculous, but they loved their new cold weather gear and it is COLD! My youngest pup really got his sweater nasty first thing and it had to be taken off & washed. In the meantime another walk was about to happen. I don’t know about your dogs, but mine are SO jealous of each other and everything! So much so that Rangers not having a sweater was causing a huge fight! I mean a HUGE fight! So my wife grabbed a scarf and tied it around Rangers neck to hopefully calm him down – It Worked!

Ranger LOVES his scarf!

He LOVES this scarf! He pranced around like he was the king of the world 🙂 They went out with me and had a great time after they both had something to wear. Crazy how thing’s work 🙂

With Scout and Ranger both fully dressed, the walk was back on! LOL!

I don’t know if there is a moral to this story, but it sure was cute!

After being out in the cold for a while following me around, they piled up for a nap. Our pets are our family in so many ways 🙂

Happy Pondering! and Happy New Year!
