Keepin’ It Real – Top 5 Koi Myths Made Right! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

It’s Wednesday, aka “Hump Day” and as usual the subject is Koi 😊 We were discussing erroneous information & myths about Koi keeping that are out there, so I thought why not make a blog post about it… Here’s a quick “Top 5”…

#1 – You Can’t Be A Koi Keeper & A Water Gardener.

Not true! You can raise healthy koi In your beautiful water garden! The koi can grow up to be just as beautiful and healthy as they are in traditional koi ponds. Proper design is key! You will LOVE how they compliment each other 😊 I have installed Hundreds of beautiful Water Gardens with healthy happy Koi.

Koi and Water Gardens go together like peas and carrots 😊 | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

#2 – Predators Will Eat All Your Fish.

Again, Proper Design is key! Raccoons generally won’t swim. That’s not to say they never swim, or couldn’t stand on the side of your pond and take a paw swipe or two at your fish… Fortunately, most fish will swim to a deeper, more protected part of the pond when a predator is threatening them. The one predator with legitimate credentials is the blue heron. Plenty of lily pads give them some protection and will work to minimize attracting a heron in the first place. Other protection measures include a motion activated water sprayer called a “Scarecrow” or even better a “Koi-cave” structure that can be built in during the pond’s construction. IF you already have a pond, they can be added with minimum remodeling during a clean out service.

A Blue Heron is a major Predator of our Koi and pond fish! BUT, we can stop them from harming our ‘finned friends’! Tools like a “Scarecrow”, or a fish cave really help! In the Fall a leaf net helps with more than 1 task 😊

#3 – Your Pond Must Be (3) Three Feet Deep to Keep Koi.

There are literally tens of thousands of two-foot deep ponds all around this country, full of happy and healthy koi. The water in a two-foot deep pond will generally only freeze eight inches down in the coldest of climates, because of the insulating qualities of the earth that surrounds the pond – Here in West Tennessee usually not at all. Another Plus – a properly designed 2’ deep pond is easy to get in and out of 😉

#4 – Koi Can’t Be Kept With Plants.

In a naturally balanced ecosystem, koi and plants complement and need one another. In nature, fish feed on plants. As a result, the fish produce waste, which is broken down by aerobic bacteria on the bottom of your pond, which, in turn, is used as fertilizer by the plants to grow and produce more natural fish food. One tip I have learned from experience- start with small Koi, they will grow up with the plants and won’t bother them at all – like in nature.

This is one of my Display Water Gardens at Carters Nursery Pond & Patio – The Aquatic Plants & Koi have been doing great here for almost 30 years!

#5 – If You Forget To Feed Your Koi They Will All Die.

Totally False! In a properly designed & stocked pond, the ecological balance will amaze you! Crystal clear water, thriving aquatic plants & a healthy eco-system are your reward! We all Love to feed our babies, but if you miss a few days they will get busy doing some “pond keeping” of their own! 😊 They will ‘Thrive’, not simply survive! The key is  to “Stay in Balance”!

Happy Pondering! & Merry Christmas 🎄 🎅🏻

The Growing Popularity of Outdoor Living! Revisited! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I penned this one several years ago but it still gets read and brought up to me. This one was published in Tennessee Gardener & I have had many Master Gardeners bring the article to shows and events over the years. It’s still very relevant today so I wanted to re-blog it 😊 I don’t have all the original pictures that were published with the story anymore. Let me know what you think. It’s all about Ourdoor Living!

Outdoor Lifestyle Areas allow you to really enjoy the backyard. A Pond, Patio, grill and garden area to get comfy is the Ultimate! This is one of my Outdoor Room displays at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tn. 38305

Living The Life Abundant

I see more and more people staying home these days… myself included. Instead of taking that trip to Spain, France or even Disney World, more and more of us are staying local and putting our time and money into our Homes & BACKYARDS! This is a huge trend across the country and it has been growing by leaps and bounds since 9/11. The trend has a name too, they call it “Cocooning ”.

It makes good sense to me! Instead of spending your vacation running around the country, spending all the money you saved, just to get back home more exhausted than before you left; Why not put your time and money into your home and backyard and enjoy it year round with your family and friends… Watergarden’s, Koi Ponds, Swimming Pools, Backyard Patios and Decks, Outdoor Kitchens with Herb Gardens and Pottery overflowing with Vegetables and Flowers 🤗 Sound good? That sounds like the ‘Life Abundant’ to me !

Lakeside Living at its Best

One of my clients recently decided to sell his beautiful home and build a new home in a local, private lakeside development. After I saw the lot I was as excited as he and his wife were! Living on the water is a wonderful thing! I was asked to work up a ‘simple’ backyard plan that would include a swimming pool with natural stone waterfalls, a watergarden with aquatic plants and fish, a stone patio with lots of space and a fishing area down by the lake. In other words, a resort right there in their own backyard. “Cocooning 101 ”!

We went to work right away and developed a ‘Concept Design’ for the back yard. With only a few minor changes we were ready to get started creating their new ‘Back yard Resort’. It was a fairly large scale job and the actual work took approximately 1 month to complete. We used specimen quality stone and nice mature plant material on this project so the first full season for this landscape looked like it had been there for quite awhile. Let me tell you folks… It changed their lives for the good!

This is a Google Earth image of the project that this story was written about over 10 years ago. Complete with a huge stone patio, large Koi Pond bordering/between the upper patio & the Pool deck/patio. An in-ground pool with a beautiful waterfall and jump rock & gorgeous landscaping right on the side of the lake. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Just Do It

Whether you live on a lake or on any average city street, you too can create a Backyard Haven that you will love coming home to each and every day. It all starts with a basic Landscape Plan; Sit down with pen and paper and do a basic sketch, OR call me, I can help!  Include a place to sit within the garden, a deck or patio, be sure to include a Fountain or Watergarden, definitely  some beautiful Shrubs and Flowers, maybe some basic Vegetables and Herbs in the Landscape or in a container like Tomato’s or Basil and Cilantro. Before you know it, you will be eating dinner out there every night. Your Lifestyle will change for the better – and you my friends will be living the ‘Life Abundant’ !

Thanks & Merry Christmas! 🎄🎅🏻❤️

Why is my Pond Water Green? What can I do? HELP! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

There is nothing worse than spending your time and money on a Pond/Water Garden just to end up with a high maintenance, green water monster… I get calls on this very subject every week. The good news – I can help!

A green water, high maintenance pond can be turned around with the proper filtration, plants & fish load. This is a before/after of a pond that was brought into balance. WOW!

Green pond water is a symptom of a larger underlying problem caused by an imbalance in your ponds ecosystem. It is one of the most common problems that people face and can sometimes be very difficult to control. Most of the time it’s due to improper design, lack of filtration, lack of proper aquatic plant load & many times an over stocking of fish. BALANCE is the name of the game when talking about a Pond/Water Garden ecosystem!

When a Water Garden is properly designed with biological filtration, pump flow, aquatic plants, stone & gravel, proper depth and proper fish stocking rates, the result is a clear, beautiful Pond! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

OK, now that you know why your pond water is green – Imbalance and/or lack of filtration, How can you fix YOUR pond?

  • First you need to get your pond analyzed by a Professional Water Garden Designer. If your in West Tn. feel free to give me a call – I can help! My # is 731-424-2206. If your not, look for a qualified contractor in your area. I am a CAC (Certified Aquascape Contractor) & there is a good chance there is a CAC near you. There are over 300 of us in the US! Follow this link and find a CAC near you – https://www.aquascapeinc.com/find-aquascape-certified-contractors
  • If you are a DIY person and want to do it yourself, that’s great too. You can use this same locator tool above to find supplies and such – Aquatic Plants, good filters, ecofriendly water treatments, healthy fish, etc…
  • The key is to create an ecofriendly system that will do the heavy lifting for you! A biological filter to clean the water, aquatic plants to consume the nitrates & phosphates that are feeding the algae, a skimmer to capture the debris that is settling to the pond bottom & feeding the green water, etc…
  • Once your pond is properly designed and working properly it will only take you a few minutes each week to keep your Water Feature working properly & clear.

I hope this short post helps you. I am here to answer any question you may have! Feel free to give me a call – If I’m not here, I WILL call you back 🙂 I want you to succeeded with your Water Feature! Because I know you will LOVE life with a Low Maintenance Pond.

Happy Pondering!
