It’s a ’Regional’ Southern Thang! | Do YOU Drink ’Boiled Custard’

I’ve been doing a Friday ’Call In’ Radio show for 20 years now. It’s a lot of fun and I’m lucky enough to be able do it with local friends who are the best in the business! The call in questions change with the seasons, which is Awesome! It’s totally caller driven, so we never know what we will be talking about 😊 Doesn’t that sound fun? Well, it is… 😎

Yesterday a caller brought up Boiled Custard, which is a holiday drink around these parts. Several people had never even heard of it… (West TN transplants 😎). So I proceeded to wax poetic on how good it is and how I grew up having it every year around the Christmas season. My ‘MiMi’ stood at the stove stirring and stirring the cook pot to make the homemade treat every year and as a boy I would wait and watch her with great anticipation…

Its a regional thing only available bottled around West TN, North Mississippi and Parts of Southern Kentucky.

When I met the girl who later became my wife, her family also enjoyed Boiled Custard – I knew it was written in the stars for us after that ❤️
So, Heres a Boiled Custard Christmas 🎄 story for all of ya’s – My mother in law moved down to Florida for work soon after Jo and I were married, at Christmas time, she couldn’t find Boiled Custard anywhere down there 😳 Oh NO!! She called everywhere, even called the Dairy Companies in the region… No dice! She Talked about it so much that all her friends wanted to try it too! So, Jo and I pack several coolers full of bottled Boiled Custard and drove all the way down to Pensacola NAS and took part in an Epic Christmas Party that Spotlighted the West TN, ‘Drive or Die’ treat – Boiled Custard! Boom 💥 It was a hit and every drop was drank! Almost everyone there wanted the recipe to be able to enjoy it again…

Now if you’ve never tried it and don’t live close, you can forget about running to the store and buying a few bottles… So I am gonna share my Grandmothers ’secret’ family recipe with you! Just remember, stir, stir, stir! DON’T let it stick to the bottom or its all for naught…

Era Carter (MiMi’’s) Homemade Boiled Custard

Ingredients –

  • 1 Gallon Whole Milk
  • 1 dozen eggs 🥚 (separate yolks&whites)
  • 2 Cups White Granulated Sugar
  • 4 heaping Tbsp corn starch
  • Cap of Vanilla Extract

In a large stockpot mix sugar, cornstarch and a little milk to get started. Then add beaten egg yolks and stir/blend well until smooth. Stir constantly over medium heat and slowly add the rest of the milk. Simmer and stir until thickened (You don’t actually boil it!). Once thickened remove from heat and allow to cool. Beat your dozen egg whites, adding a little sugar until you have stiff peaks, then fold into cooled custard mix. Immediately refrigerate and serve when fully chilled.

There is nothing like a cold glass of boiled custard with a piece of Pecan Pie ❤️ Takes me right back to my MiMis kitchen…

Many people add a little TN whiskey 🥃 to their Boiled Custard for taste & that is completely up to the individual. As for me, I drink mine strait up 😊

Merry Christmas

Christmas 2023! Back in the 1980s my mom used to buy it at Kroger in Louisville, KY in cartons. I never saw it again until last year at Publix. Now in 2023 Publix has a regular & an amaretto flavored varieties. I can’t get enough of it & I need to stop!! I buy the regular flavor & add either amaretto or brandy to it. I took it to a Christmas party last weekend & it was a big hit. It ran out even before the hostess’s egg nog😊 Today at my suggestion, a friend took it to his churchs Xmas Eve service. No one had ever heard of it. Again it was such a hit, they sent him out to find as many cartons as he could find lol. Last I heard, he was at his 2nd Publix stop🤣

Thx for the story & Merry Christmas🎄

Susan
