My Pond Pump Is Out! What do I do? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Having a Waterfall right outside your back door is a magical thing indeed! 😊 Ahhh the southing sights & sounds… BUT, when it quits running, it’s NEVER at an opportune moment! No indeed! Your either out of town, or it’s scorching HOT 🥵 and your fish are gasping for air, or it’s winter and your pond freezes solid… Your Pond Pump Never goes out at an opportune moment!

Your Waterfall serves many purposes. It’s the central focal point of the Feature, but it also aerates the pond and circulates the water, VERY important for your aquatic life. If your Pond Pump is out, ALL of this stops…

Your Pump is the heart of your Pond! When it stops running, it’s important to have a backup plan! Many people keep a small pump that can be placed in shallow water to “flash the surface” , this will help to keep oxygen in the water while you get a replacement Pond Pump to power your Waterfall.

Pond Pumps come in different shapes and sizes! It’s a great idea to have a backup pump in case of an outage! It could save your sanity and you’re Koi’s life. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Many of my clients also have an aeration system in their Pond. This helps to oxygenate the water and it’s unlikely that the pump and the aeration system will fail at the same time. I recommend powering them on separate circuits in case of GFCI interruptions.

Having an Aeration System on your Pond is a great way to maintain oxygen levels for your finned friends. Plug your system into a different outlet & circuit than your pump for even more assurance.

– Many of my clients take care of their own pumps and maintenance, which is Great! But even more simply call me to take care of their problems. I have a 24/7 maintenance service available to help you and your Pond. Simply call 731-424-2206 for assistance. We stock most pumps and aeration systems and get you fixed up in a jiffy!

I hope this little bit of info on pumps and ponds was helpful!

Happy Pondering! 🤔

Hump Day Koi Story – It’s 10 Degrees Outside! Will My Koi Survive? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Man it’s COLD! WOW! I walked out to check on my Water Garden a few minutes ago ❄️ Folks, it’s Cold out there! I was at a full trot by the time I made it back to the door 😳 My dogs were even ready to come back in!

Scout and Ranger were both fully dressed, so I don’t think they got as cold as I did 😇 LOL!

Good News! My Water Garden is doing fine! My Koi have assumed the position “Hovering at the bottom” as usual this time of year… So, alls well with the Pond 😊They are just like me, waiting for Spring!

But, I still get a few calls every year when it gets ‘Really Cold’ outside, especially when you see some icing, and it’s almost always the same few questions, with #1 lately (today) being, “Will my Koi be ok in Cold like this’? First, let me say – What a considerate question! People LOVE their pets 😊 So, let me give you the good news… Yes! Your Koi will survive this cold snap and will be just fine!

Koi are cold blooded (Poikilothermic) fish, In the wintertime, their metabolism slows to a crawl. They can usually be found at the bottom of the pond, hovering, ie: treading water. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson,
Tennessee

There are a few things that you can do to help them through a cold snap! # 1 is – IF your Pond tries to freeze – Keep a hole open in the ice! This should be a preventative measure and hopefully not a reactionary one…

If you turn your ponds pump off in a bad freeze, use a floating heater/de-icer to maintain a hole in the ice to exchange gases/oxygen for your fish’s health and well being. You can purchase a floating pond heater at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio.

There are a LOT of articles on this BLOG that will help you with your Water Garden & Koi! But, to cover today’s question/concerns, Your Koi will be OK 👌🏻

Stay warm! Remember- Spring is Coming!

Naturalistic Waterfalls | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio| Jackson, TN

Let’s try this again 😊 Yesterday I had someone tell me that a video I posted had gone bad. So I checked it and they were right, I don’t know what happened, but you can’t see it & I couldn’t fix it by editing… So, I figured I would repost it.

I really love this feature! BIG flow, naturalistic waterfalls and creek flowing into a lake. We tried to make this one look as natural as possible! Big boulders, moss, driftwood and natural stumps that look like they were put there by storms and heavy water flows, etc.. We hope you like them too 😊
