Carter's Water Garden

Waterfall Wednesday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I thought this was a great picture to post on this steamy, HOT 🥵 day! Hottest of 2020 yet! Having a shady spot to cool off is so nice! Add the cooling effect of moving water & you’ve got your own little piece of heaven.

I love this shady babbling stream! On a day like today, it’s like sitting down by a natural air conditioner! At least 20-25 degrees cooler than anywhere else in the entire Landscape. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Folks, it’s #waterfallwednesday! Proceed accordingly 😉

Stay cool… It’s gonna be a scorcher all week!

Respectably Lazy…

Ok, I’ll admit it, I enjoy a good nap! Especially on a HOT Summer afternoon 😎 My wife asked me – What is the perfect nap 😴? Well, if I had to describe it… The perfect nap… “A Shady spot, laying in a nice hammock with the sound of a waterfall in the background and a light breeze blowing! Shang-ra-la!

Enjoying a good nap on a day off doesn’t make you lazy! I’d like to think it shows that you know how to truly enjoy the finer things! The little things that make life good 😊 Stop and smell those roses 🌹 And then, string up your Hammock & take a ‘Respectable nap’! You deserve it.

Have a great weekend!

Can I have a Koi Pond in a shady yard? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Question : Can I have a Koi Pond in a shady yard?

I know you have read in many places that you just can’t have a Pond in a shady yard with trees. Plants won’t do well and it will be full of leafs… BUT – good news! You CAN!

Imagine a lazy Summer day,’kicked back in the cool shade by your waterfall, feeding your Koi, the grill smoking on the patio… Sound good? It’s a daily reality for many lucky Pond lovers!

This Pond is in Full shade! So many beautiful plants are in this picture with this Waterfall. Many people don’t know that Impatients are also an aquatic plant. These pictures are all in the water and as you see are Beautiful!!

To have success there are a few things to know!

– First, shade trees drop leaves – so you MUST have a skimmer. If you design your Pond right, the skimmer will do 90% of the work all season! A leaf net for a few weeks in the fall will do the rest!

– Secondly, lacking full sun you will have to choose shade loving plants. You can definitely have some color and bloom, but you will also need to depend on plants with good foliage color and texture. Water lilies will not be your friend in a shady pond, but lots of other great plants will! Here’s a list of a few Shade Loving Aquatic Plants –

  •  Water Lettuce
  • Parrots Feather
  • Frog Bit
  • Aquatic 4-leaf Clover
  • Marsh Marigolds
  • Creeping Jenny
  • Varigatef Water Celery
  • Aquatic Forget Me Not
  • Taro (several varieties)
  • Impatients (annuals – AWESOME color!)
  • Lizards Tail
  • Aquatic Iris

I hope this puts your mind at ease. With a properly designed Pond, you can enjoy a Low Maintenance Pond of your dreams 😊

Happy Pondering!
