6 Things Koi Keepers Always Do In Their Ponds | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN
1- Koi Keepers always keep a Debris Net handy! Murphy’s Law applies to your Pond! IF it can get in your Pond, it eventually will… So having a sturdy Debris Net handy, is a must!

2- Koi Keepers always add Beneficial Bacteria to their Ponds. It does a great job of helping you keep the water clean and healthy with minimal effort.

3- Koi Keepers always keep an eye on Aquatic Plant growth. They have learned that spending just a few minutes a week touching up their plants, makes them perform beautifully throughout the season!
4- Koi Keepers feed their “Finned Friends” top quality Koi Food! They make sure that their Koi Food is high quality and doesn’t have corn 🌽 in the top 3 ingredients.

5- Koi Keepers keep their Ponds clean! Spring and Fall Pond Maintenance is a MUST! They always start the Spring season with a comprehensive Pond Cleaning. Then they follow up with partial water changes as needed and Fall Pond Netting.
6- Koi Keepers spend quality time out by their Ponds with friends, family and of course, their Koi! They have learned that the Greatest Thing About Having A Pond, is spending time around it. They have learned that ‘A Pond will change your life!’

Thanks! Have a wonderful day 😊

As a ‘Pond Enthusiast’ I am always looking for ideas & tips to keep my Water Garden cleaner and ways to have less maintenance. Then I like to share them with you 😊 One of the biggies is Proper Filtration! Keeping the water clean & clear! And also, keeping the algae and sludge to a minimum… That brings me to today’s Pond Tip : 👇🏻
– Algae Eating Japanese Trapdoor Snails (Viviparis malleatus). 💥
These snails are highly sought after by Pond Keepers. They are non-invasive, hardy & will help to keep algae under control in your Water Garden! Japanese Trapdoor Snails will work around your entire Pond consuming decaying organic matter like algae, leaves, excess fish food, and fish waste.

Japanese Trapdoor Snails are hardy and can live up to 5 years! They really help to keep your pond clean. Here’s one we just pulled out of a pond at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio during a clean out demonstration | Jackson, TN
Japanese Trapdoor Snails are “Live-Bearing” and only breed a couple of times per year – So they won’t take over your pond! Unlike other snails that can breed out of control.

Japanese trapdoor Snails do a great job helping with Pond Maintenance and they only cost around $5 each.
I try to always have some available for purchase. You need to have around 10 Japanese Trapdoor Snails per 50 sq. ft. of surface area of pond and they really make a difference!
There you have it… Pond Tip Tuesday lives on…

A great client that has become a good friend recently asked me to help him pick out a few Koi for his new Water Garden. I helped him Design his Pond and Waterfalls last year and we built it in the Fall. Long story short – He LOVES it! He’s spent every spare, dry, bearable moment messing around out there this Winter and can’t wait until Spring when he can really set up housekeeping for the Spring/Summer/Fall season! 🙂 Now. it’s time to get some fish for his new Pond and he’s excited! We looked at quite a few Koi, & We asked each other all kinds of questions as you might imagine, the one he asked me that really touched me was “What happens to my Koi if they outlive me”?…
He read one of my blogs, in where I mentioned the “Famous Japanese Koi”, ‘Hanako’ that lived to be over 225 years old! He realized they can be long living pets and just wanted to hear what might happen to them. 😊 Pretty neat to think about that. In Japan Koi are prized and in some cases passed down, even willed to family upon the owners death. It’s an honor.
I have been in business long enough that I have actually dealt with this situation more than once. Most of the time the Koi stay with the Pond & the spouse and/or family carries on. But I have seen people move the fish to other Ponds, and even sell or give the fish to other people with Ponds of their own. I myself have taken many Koi in and fostered them until they could be placed in a new home.
Then I reminded him, Koi means Love! And Love will always find a way! 😊 I told told him – “Enjoy your Pond, & enjoy your Koi! They will bring you many years of Interest & enjoyment”. Words to live by…

Spring is here! The Aquatic Plants are flushing out as the water warms up & our finned friends are hungry! Feeding your Koi quality food is a key to good health.

The water temperature is above 55 degrees now in most places – ie; Time to start feeding our Koi! Do it right! Confirm YOUR water temp. & start them with Low Temperature Fish Food for the first couple of weeks. Work in some fresh veggies to help get their digestive system off to a good start.
I like to start in Spring with a cool temp food with some fruits and veggies thrown in too – oranges, grapefruit, lettuce, spinach, sweet peas, softened Carrots, etc.. As the water warms up, slowly transition to a quality Koi food for growth (high protein). Then I alternate every two weeks or so from Growth to Color Enhancing Koi food & I feed veggies & fruit as special snacks. In Summer they LOVE watermelon 😊

Do your Koi like watermelon? Cut a melon in round pieces and enjoy the heart for yourself 🙂 Then float a couple of pieces in the pond, the fish will eat from below. As they learn to LOVE it, transition to feeding by hand.

This is a top quality Koi Food that comes in Cool Temp, Growth Formula & Color Enhancing pellets. Quality Koi Food is ALWAYS in stock at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN
Another important thing to do for the health of your Pond Fish is to start the season with a CLEAN Pond!
- Trim Plants
- Clean and dispose of leafs & debris.
- Clean and service all filters.
- Inspect your Pond Pump, Check Valve & connections.
- Do water changes &/or a complete clean-out asap.
- Start dosing beneficial bacteria to build up you’re freshly cleaned bio-filter.
Capture & place the fish in tanks and then thoroughly clean debris, straiten up rocks & gravel and wash the pond down before refilling. And don’t forget to dose the new water with Pond detox.
Doing these few basic things will keep your Water Garden clean and your Koi HEALTHY, and it will set you up for a great season. It’s time!
Happy Pondering!
