Many of my clients have an aeration system in their Pond as well as a pump and Waterfall. Why? The Aeration System helps to oxygenate and circulate the water! And its cheap insurance! As itās very unlikely that the pump and the aeration system would fail at the same time leaving your pond and your Fish with no circulation!

Whether you take care of your own Pond Maintenance or one of our Maintenance Technicians takes care of your Pond for you, itās important to have a plan and to be ready āJust in caseā⦠I have a complete maintenance service available to help you with your Pond and we stock pumps and aeration systems at our Nursery and Garden Center. Itās August… Already! Wow! Top it off with another āPond Tip Tuesdayā šĀ
I usually give tips for your Koi Pond, Water Garden, Garden Pond, etc… But, today I wanted to talk about Larger bodies of water! Farm Ponds, Lakes, Retention Ponds and the like. Did you know that we carry a full line of Water Treatments, Aquatic Weed Control & Aeration Systems for Ponds and Lakes? Including Floating Fountains and Night Lighting Systems š„
Check it out šš»
We have many customers who have a Farm Pond, Lake or Retention Pond as well as a backyard Water Garden. I have been limited on the products that we carry to help with larger bodies of water like Lakes or Farm/Retention Ponds until now. By popular demand from our customers we are now carrying a complete line of Lake and Pond management Water Treatments & Sub-surface Aeration systems! These treatments are easy to apply and work great and the Aeration systems are high quality and install so easily.
Why Proactive care is the new standard in pond management
The old wayā¦
For years, the accepted method of pond management was to wait for a problem, like an algae bloom or excessive aquatic weed growth and then āreact to itā with a chemical application. Although this is effective at providing a quick fix, it does not address the actual problem. In many cases, this reactive approach is catching up with pond owners. Those that have been practicing this form of management are finding it more and more difficult to control unwanted weeds and algae. Chemicals are a great tool but not the complete toolbox.
Why is the old way outdated?
Over the years, each time you applied chemicals; weeds and algae were killed off and left to rot on the pondās bottom. This is equivalent to adding fertilizer to your pond. When weeds and algae die, they immediately start to biodegrade. During this process, the dead organic matter is converted into rich organic muck. Although this would be great for a garden, it has a very negative effect on a pond. The nutrients found in this muck greatly contribute to future weed and algae problems.
The NEW wayā¦
Thereās a better way to prevent these nutrient buildups from occurring in your pond. We call it PROACTIVE Care involving these tools:
Sub-surface aeration: By aerating your pond from the bottom up, using AirmaxĀ® Aeration Systems, youāll circulate incredible amounts of water, drastically increasing the dissolved oxygen levels in your water column, which in turn will allow for increased levels of beneficial bacteria to accumulate in your pond.
Bacteria augmentation: Naturally occurring beneficial bacteria begin to colonize in most natural ponds when water temperatures reach approximately 50 degrees Fahrenheit. During early stages of a pondās life cycle this may be enough to maintain a healthy ecosystem although as a pond gets older, especially when chemical applications are needed, it is necessary to start thinking proactively to subsidize Mother Natureās efforts.
The PROACTIVE Care solution? Add Pond LogicĀ® PondClear⢠and MuckAway⢠natural bacteria to radically increase your bacteria count. The billions of PondClear⢠specialized microbes will compete for the nutrients in your water column while the MuckAway⢠sinking pellets send billions of microbes to the bottom of your pond, working quickly to eliminate up to 5ā of muck each season, as well as prevent future build up.
Pond Shading: Excessive sunlight can have a negative effect on water quality. Adding one of the Pond LogicĀ® Pond Dyes will beautify your pond and provide a natural shade while improving water quality.
By exercising PROACTIVE Care (Sub-surface Aeration, Bacteria Augmentation and Pond Shading), youāll be aggressively addressing the root of the problem ā excess nutrients and sunlight. Give PROACTIVE Care a try⦠you have nothing to lose ā other than nutrients and muck! We GURANTEE you will be happier with the results!
Natural Bacteria Treatments
With the use of Natural Bacteria and/or Pond Dyes, you can get to the source of common pond problems; excessive nutrients in the water column and the muck at the bottom of the pond. By being proactive and providing microbial competition for the nutrients, you can make maintain a healthy pond for all, including the fish, to enjoy.
Chemical Treatments
Chemical Treatments are sometimes necessary as a management tool. The more mature a pond is, the more you have to deal with aquatic weeds and algae. They not only can be annoying, but they can choke the life out of any delicate ecosystem if proper action isnāt taken.
Aquatic Weed Control
Successful aquatic weed control starts with proper identification. The more mature a pond is, the more you have to deal with aquatic weeds and algae. They not only can be annoying, but they can choke the life out of any delicate ecosystem if proper action isnāt taken.
ā Identify
Identification is the absolute key to success in controlling aquatic weeds and algae. Weāve had many cases when Chara, which is a form of algae, was mistaken for a pond weed. Many people confuse duckweed and watermeal with floating algae. Both look like floating mats on the pondās surface, but they are treated very differently. If you are ever in doubt about the type(s) of aquatic weeds or algae you have present in your pond, donāt hesitate to pick up the phone and call us at 731-424-2206. We are here for your support, and will help you to identify your weeds and give you a solution.
ā Eradicate
Once weāve identified the aquatic weed(s) or algae itās time to find a solution to get rid of the problem. Carters Nursery carries a wide array of chemicals for controlling your aquatic nuisance species.
ā Enjoy
A pond that is clean, clear, and healthy is an excellent place to relax by, swim in, and fish. The whole family can get involved in learning about aquatic ecosystems in this great outdoor classroom. All it takes is to Identify, Eradicate & Enjoy.
Sub-surface Aeration
We have professional quality aeration systems specifically designed for ALL Lakes & Ponds! From shallow water ponds to larger, deeper water lakes we got you covered. Our powerful aeration systems are the quietest, most efficient & easiest to install available on the market period! You will notice the improvement in water quality almost immediately.
Water Garden Water Treatments
We still have the largest selection of Koi Pond & Water Garden Supplies available in the area. We proudly stock the best of the best in water treatments featuring a full line of Aquascape products!

Itās getting HOT folks! Saturday was a scorcher – 102 F. Heat factor… Whew š Can you say āDog Daysā are coming… What do you do when itās too Hot to breathe? A/C!!!Ā
A better question: What can you do in the Hot months to help your Koi survive & thrive?Ā

As the temperatures rise, the Dissolved Oxygen in the water goes Down… How can you increase the D.O. In the warmer months? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee
Waterfalls and streams help to increase the Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.) in your Pond.
In the Spring, Fall & Winter D.O. Is usually ample when you have a waterfall and aquatic plants, But, as the water temperature increases in the late Spring and as we enter Summer, the D.O. goes way down! That can cause serious problems for your Koi! Even death š! What can you do to fix this?Ā

Many of my clients have an aeration system in their Pond. This helps to increase the D.O. (Dissolved Oxygen) In the water! Itās also a great safety for your fish as well, itās very unlikely that the waterfall pump and the aeration system would fail at the same time, leaving your finned friends vulnerable. I recommend powering your aerator on a separate circuit as well, in case of GFCI interruptions. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee
A good aeration system really increases the Dissolved Oxygen in your pond water! This means a healthy pond, clean water & healthy vigorous Koi!Ā
A good aeration system is fairly inexpensive & simple to install as well.Ā
This is my Pond Tip for the week and I hope it helps š
Happy Pondering!Ā

Check out more on whatās happening in our great little town at the web site –Ā https://jacksontn.com/tourism/
Lot of enthusiasm for the return of Spring & LOTS of gardening questions –
- Ā Can I plant trees and shrubs now? Yes!
- Can I start a compost now? Yes! Use all those excessive leafs and landscape debris along with kitchen scraps like vegetable peaking, egg shells, coffee grounds, etc.
- What can I do to keep my pond from freezing? Several things can help you. First a floating pond heater is a great tool! It only kicks on when temps fall below freezing and it will keep a hole open in the ice! Also – an aeration unit wil bubble up and keep the surface moving. OR you can use a small pump close to the surface to flash up and keep a hole open.
- When is a good time to amend the soil in my garden? Any time now if the ground is workable.
- Do I have blueberries in stock? YES! 25% off!
- When can I start feeding my Koi again? Itās all about water temperature! Above 50 degrees is the magic #!
Sonic Blast of the Past question – Who played Ā Louie Depalma in the TV series Taxi??? The winner gets a $10 gift card! John L. Called in almost immediately with the answer! Interesting fact – Danny Devito is 4ā 10ā tall…

I had a customer come in to the Pond Shop yesterday needing help. He has had a Pond for several years now and is ready to make it lower in maintenance. He wants to put a skimmer on his Pond! He is a DIY guy and wants to install it himself and he wants to do it right. BUT, he has fish… Several are pretty good sized Koi and he is worried that the Pond Skimmer could be a problem… His #1 question was – “Will my Koi get trapped in my Skimmer Filter”?

One of the first things you need to do when choosing a Skimmer Filter for your Pond is to find out what size Skimmer you need.
The first thing I told him while answering his question was NOT to worry about the fish. It’s overwhelmingly NOT a problem. I showed him around the Ponds here at the Nursery & once he saw the simple operation of the system and how healthy & happy my Koi are he was a believer.
Then I asked him a few questions to figure out what type and size Skimmer would be best for his application.
- I found out that he has a fairly large Pond/Water Garden, 3′ deep, with quite a few fish.
- He has over 2,500 gallons of water in his system.
- He has a fairly powerful pump – around 7,000 GPH (gallons per hour). The water from that pump splits and goes to 2 different Waterfalls.
- His Pond has No bottom aeration.
- We sketched out the pond from a couple of photos that he had on his phone and were able to quickly figure out what he needed.
He installed this Pond himself. It’s basically round in shape with 2 different Waterfalls. The pond is 3′ in depth & the upper shelf is approximately 1 to 1 1/2′ in depth. There is no stone in the pond and no gravel on the bottom… Which after he saw how we do it is about to change š Seeing is Believing!
Not only did he need a Skimmer Filter, he needed a Plumbing upgrade! He had a mis-mash of plumbing pieces going to 2 waterfalls from a submerged pump in the bottom of the pond. So we specified 2″ flex PVC Plumbing AND we added a Check valve in there to make it easy for future maintenance. We also decided to install a 2 stone aeration system.

So easy to install! A simple Aeration System will make your pond healthier, your fish happier & will help with much needed dissolved oxygen for your finned pets.
And we specified a Top of the line Skimmer, with an adjustable faceplate, Ā a rigid debris basket and a removable weirĀ (just in case his fish need some time to adjust to the new Skimmer).

This is the Cadillac of Pond Skimmers! With an adjustable faceplate, removable weir & rigid debris basket, the Signature Series 1000 Pond Skimmer by Aquascape Inc. has got you covered! | We are Master Certified Aquascape Contractors! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee.

Here’s a side view of his new Skimmer! When this is properly installed it will be virtually invisible & do most of the work throughout the year!

The Skimmer we chose has LOTS of room inside the basket, an adjustable faceplate, a removable weir and is a great choice if you have Koi. |Ā Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee.
He left āCarter Countryā a Happy Customer!š He purchased the Skimmer, plumbing, fittings & Aeration System plus 10 bags of gravel and set off to install his new Skimmer š He has promised to send me an after picture and a report on his installation. I will share it with y’all too. It makes me smile when I talk to a fellow Pond Enthusiast that is excited about the hobby and his Pond!
PS: IF you ever have a problem with Koi getting trapped in the skimmer (its only happened a few times in 30 years) – give me a call and I will help walk you through the “training process”. It’s really as simple as checking daily and shooing them out, they will get the point. It’s also a great idea to remove the weir flap from the skimmer faceplate until the new wears off for the fish IF your having issues.
Happy Pondering!
