Q: Do You Want Your Landscape & Garden Plants to Keep Performing into Late Summer & Fall?

We are past the 4th of July now and its getting HOT! Your plants and flowers have been doing great, but now they are looking a bit overgrown, and… Tired? I want my Flowering Plants and my veggies to keep on keeping on till frost! A question we get a lot at Carters Nursery is – What do I need to do to keep my Plants Performing through the dog days and into Fall? That is a great question to ask! I’ll show you what I use.

Do You Want Your Landscape & Garden Plants to Keep Performing into Late Summer & Fall? Try This! | Organic Potting Soil & Organic Fertilizers | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I use a lot of Fox Farm products in my Landscape and in my edible garden. In my opinion, Happy Frog Potting Soil is a must! It very balanced and has all the things you need – It is amended with soil microbes that help improve root efficiency and encourage nutrient uptake, as well as earthworm castings, bat guano, and aged forest products. I use it as a top dressing that i work into my garden soil, a potting medium and as a mulch in some annual beds. | Organic Potting Soil & Organic Fertilizers | Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

This pushes HUGE blooms! It really works!

We also carry a GREAT line of Liquid Fertilizers, as well as bagged Granular Fertilizers.

We even carry Soil Acidifiers, Garden Lime and Organic Pest Control products.

Come on out and get what your Garden and your Landscape needs to Thrive through the seasons!

Sunday Reflections…

Does the changing of the seasons change your entire world? If it does, you may be in a seasonal business… Or, you may just be a gardener 🪴

Between watering plants, designing water features and landscapes and running a business, it’s sometimes hard to find the time to attend to your own garden. Sunday’s in the garden are my therapy…

What a beautiful Sunday morning! A dense fog burned off into a gorgeous Sunny day! I for one won’t be wasting time inside watching TV 📺

My “Seasonal Sunday Office” is feeling pretty good 😌

If your wondering what my beautiful photographer is looking at…. 👇🏻
One of our greenhouse frogs 🐸 send me an idea for a great greenhouse frog name 💥 I’ll post it in your honor 😉

“An altered look about the hills;
A Tyrian light the village fills;
A wider sunrise in the dawn;
A deeper twilight on the lawn;
A print of a vermilion foot;
A purple finger on the slope;
A flippant fly upon the pane;
A spider at his trade again;
An added strut in chanticleer;
A flower expected everywhere …”

Have a happy day!

Is It May 1st. Already? Happy May Day! AND – TGIF! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Saying goodbye to April is sad, BUT – Hello May! Here’s a reprint from May Day’s past…

In the old days as April rolled to an end, people would begin gathering flowers and candies and other goodies to put in May baskets to hang on the doors of friends, neighbors and loved ones on May 1, aka; May Day.

“May Day” can mean a few things – Like – Mayday, Mayday! ie; Help!!!

May-day – noun – 1. an international radio distress signal used by ships and aircraft.

OR it could be an age old celebration of Spring moving into Summer – May Day dates way back to ancient times and is traditionally celebrated with dancing and singing and feasting and the like 🙂

Kids dancing around the ‘Maypole’.

In Hawaii May 1st. is called Lei Day 🌺 They eat traditional foods and celebrate Island culture. And yes, every one gets Lei’d! 🙂 Let’s go to Hawaii! 😊

But for me, May 1st. is the date that I use as my planting guide! It’s the date that I start planting in earnest. Annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, melons, etc.!!! It’s on!

May 1st. is a GREAT date to start planting Annuals, Perennials, Vegetables, Herbs, Aquatic Plants, Roses, etc. We are LOADED with Plants for you at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

We had a long Winter & a cool wet Spring so far, but fear not! May is where it all changes! 🙂 Happy “May Day” & a Happy Gardening Season!

I ❤️ Blueberries | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I ❤️ blueberries! I eat them most everyday! They are great in oatmeal, cereal, salads, smoothies, pies, Ad infinitum… Blueberries rock!!! They are also a native fruit that grows well in many areas.

Blueberries are a very rewarding plant. Beautiful, hardy & the fruit is so good! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Here in the South with our long growing season & plentiful rainfall, growing blueberries is a ‘no-brainer’… Sure, I plant them in the field or around the orchard, but I also LOVE to use them as ornamental Landscape plantings! They make great fill in plants along a sunny foundation or a backdrop for a bird feeding area or even as a screening hedge! Blueberries are Very versatile 😊

Tips for Growing –

– One of the most important things to remember when growing blueberries is that they demand a very low PH (acidic 4.5 – 5.5 or so) to grow well & thrive. So yearly you have to check PH and add an acidifier like Sulfur, Aluminum Sulfate, Ammonium Sulfate, etc… I usually opt for the organic sulfur because I am eating these 🙂 AND, I think it gives a better, sweeter taste.

I recommend using an Organic Acidifier (Sulfur) to keep the PH low. This will make for healthy, vigorous Blueberries, that just taste great! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

– If your planting Blueberries in our area, initial soil prep is key! Build up beds a little to aid in drainage. Till in some sand, peat and organic compost. Apply sulfur as needed based on PH test.

– Planting the right variety is huge!
Always choose Southern Rabbit eye varieties for success in W. TN. A few of my favorites are – Premier, Tifblue, Powder Blue & Climax. Fertilize with an organic fertilizer for fruit in late Winter/early Spring. Then I feed several times throughout the season with an organic compost tea and side dress mid season with a little composted manure. Mulching is very important too! Try crushed pine bark or pine needles. Both are acidic and work well.

– Click on this link below to learn about how to trim/prune your blueberries for better form & function! 👇🏻

https://savvygardening.com/pruning-blueberries/

PS: This is a great time to set out some blueberries! And, a great time to prune & apply compost & sulphur for PH to your existing bushes.

Good Luck! & Happy Gardening!
