Memory Plants | Throwback Thursday | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Throwback Thursday is always a great day! Especially when the throwback memory is Flowers 🌺 I’m always talking or writing about something I planted with my Grandparents, here’s another group of perennial flowers that are really showing out right now…

Those white spikes blooming are an old fashioned Perez flower called Gooseneck Loosestrife. My grandmother got these many years ago up in the mountains and we planted them in this spot way back then. They bring up a wonderful memory each year as they bloom.
As you see, they spread 😊 If you look closely to the left, you can see a goose looking at you from within the flowers.

That’s my #throwbackthursday for the week. I hope you are having a good one!

Here’s to great Memories and to great Memory Plants.

The Sound of The Season | Carters Nursery, Pond and Patio | Jackson, TN

There’s nothing like the first evening in late Winter or Early Spring when you hear the peepers waking up. Their sound fills the air and you know Spring is almost here. Once “Spring has Sprung” that nighttime sound only gets deeper and more intense… Especially when you have a Pond in your Landscape. I literally fell asleep last night sitting by my Pond 😴
So I made a short video recording of the “Sound of the Season” in my yard. Take a listen 🎧

I sure do enjoy the “Nightlife” 😊

Have a good day and even better night!

Sunday Reflections…

As the seasons change so do the flowers 💐 So does the feelings and emotions of the changes we are forced to deal with. It’s always tough for me. Especially giving up Summer… But, ya gotta go with the flow and be happy where your at 😊 So I sat down for a few minutes to look at the Summer plants and flowers that I am about to uproot and dispose of. They have really brought me a lot of happiness this Summer. Lots of color and shade and privacy as well. Especially my hanging basket wall. I can see out well, but you can’t see in very well😊 Privacy 💥 I call it the “Hanging Gardens of Babaloo” 😂

This is from where I sit. The foliage is thinner back here on purpose- More room for me, with privacy.

The view from outside is a little different…

From outside looking in is a different story. Lush foliage and color to provide the privacy screen that I desired. Can you see Jo sitting there? I’m gonna hate to see it go 😢 But, it’s Fall 🍁 Time for a different look and feeling…

“But now in September the garden has cooled, and with it my possessiveness.  The sun warms my back instead of beating on my head … The harvest has dwindled, and I have grown apart from the intense midsummer relationship that brought it on.”
   ~ Robert Finch

I will send pictures of the pansies, corn stalks, pumpkins 🎃 & scarecrows as they go up…

Ive been writing ✍️ “Fall is Coming” for quite a while now…

Fall is Here! I gotta get busy…

Have a great Sunday!

Pond TALE Tuesday… | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I LOVE designing and building Custom Water Features! Many of my designs start with a story… Or a ‘Tale’ if you will. Like this one Today for instance…

The Tale is, on my beautiful brides and my Honeymoon, we drove to the Mountains of East Tennessee. We had a big old time too! ❤️ One day in particular, we decided to get out and ride around and see where the road would lead us. Long story short, we took a picnic 🧺 lunch and headed down a trail into the woods … We ended up stopping by a beautiful stone creek with Several little Waterfalls and a perfect spot to sit down and eat. My wife Jo Was so struck by the spot that I sketched the little stream and waterfalls out on a napkin and promised to build her a spot “just like it” at home when we got back 😊

This is what I came up with based on my sketch and memory from that little spot in the woods outside Gatlinburg. Complete with Natural Tennessee Stone, driftwood and washed out stumps.

I have added a stone patio, a fire 🔥 pit, a grilling area and more, but the original Tale lives on 😊 We just celebrated our 27th Anniversary. This little Waterfall and Pond has brought us much joy ❤️ Heck, I’m still writing stories about it all these years later.

Here’s a picture of the Waterfalls and Pond from opposing angles.

So there’s a sappy Tuesday Tale about Peace ✌🏻 Love ❤️ & Waterfalls 😊 Have a great day!

Beautiful Hummingbird, No, Wait… It’s a Moth?!

I love watering my plants and flowers 🌺 As I water each one carefully, I pinch off bad leaves and dead flowers & really just enjoy the beauty. I also get buzzed by all the hummingbirds going back and forth between feeders and flowers, which is Awesome! And now that we’re into mid/late Summer the little tiny Hummingbirds are back in big #’s… Yep, I’m talking about the Hummingbird Moth! aka: Sphinx Moth, aka: Clearwing Moth, aka: Hawk Moth.

I just LOVE when these little guys start buzzing around the garden. So hypnotizing to watch. So Beautiful ❤️

These little guys hover in and out of my flowers and literally put on a show. They LOVE all the same flowers as the Hummingbirds too – Lantana, Salvia, Million Bells, Pentas, Trumpet Vine, Honeysuckle, Mandavilla, etc etc…

Here’s an excerpt from a good article –

“The Clearwing Hummingbird Moths are classified in the Sphinx Moth family. The female moths lays her eggs on larval host plants such as Honeysuckle (Lonicera), Snowberry (Symphoricarpos), Hawthorns (Crataegus), Cherries and Plums (Prunus).“

If you look at some of these mentioned host plants now, you can find clusters of their eggs 🥚 The are little bitty round, green balls on the bottom of the leaves. Then in short time, you will see the small caterpillars 🐛 Green in color with a distinctive horn at the back (kinda like a tomato hornworm).

Here is a link to an info page on them that will give you lots of good specific information 👇🏻

Have a great day and get out there and enjoy your gardens in this marvelous weather we’ve been having. Don’t ever waste a Saturday in the Summer 😊
