Hump Day Koi Fix | What IS The Rule of 50 | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I’ve been hawking my Pond Thermometer these last few weeks! The temperature of the water has been steadily rising as the days get longer and we approach Spring. As usual, I will start the season with Cool Temp Koi Food when the water temp has stabilized over 50 + degrees. The “rule of 50” I like to call it 😉

It’s about time to start feeding our Koi “Cool Temp. Fish Food” & even some fresh fruits and veggies like peas, oranges, grapefruit & softened carrots again! YES!!! I ❤️ Spring! Just remember to read the thermometer 🌡 & follow the “Rule of 50”! Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

This is my favorite season of the year! Everything is waking up! Including my KOI! They have been VERY active lately! And literally begging for food 😊 It’s so hard to wait… But, it’s part of the process & it’s so important for our finned friends health and well being.

Keep your Koi happy and healthy as we transition into Spring. Use quality Cool Temperature Koi Food from Carters Nursery Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee | I ❤️ Koi!

So, to wrap it up…

The Rule of 50 = Let the water temp stabilize for at least a week at 50+ degrees Fahrenheit before you start to feed your koi in the Spring. AND, when you do start back to feeding, use a quality, Cool Season Koi Food! And don’t over feed! Happier days are here again 😊

Your “Hump Day” Koi Fix – WHAT Does A Koi Pond Symbolize ? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

I ❤️ Koi! And of course I ❤️ Koi Ponds too 😊

Lately I’ve been studying Kanji & symbolism in Japan. Last Wednesday I wrote about how the Kanji for Koi & Love are 1 in the same… 😊 I LOVE that! Koi also symbolize several other things in Japanese culture that are worthy of note!

Swimming koi represent advancement and determination. Fish symbolize wealth & surplus!

In the Koi Pond, the synergy of the Koi & the Pond & the Waterfalls come together & Love & Friendship are manifested.

This is the Kanji for Koi as well as the Kanji for Love.

This Kanji means Friendship.

Tomorrow is Valentines Day, a day made for Love & Friendship! We could start a new tradition – Take that special someone to the Koi Pond on Valentines Day 😊 I better not get too carried away, but I thought it was a great Segway between the two…

I really enjoy learning more about the Japanese culture! And I always Love learning more about Koi & Koi Ponds 😊 I have forged many friendships around Koi Ponds! So cool! I truly ❤️ My Job!

Have a great day & enjoy your Koi!

PS: Happy Valentines Day Eve…

Hump Day Koi Story – It’s 10 Degrees Outside! Will My Koi Survive? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Man it’s COLD! WOW! I walked out to check on my Water Garden a few minutes ago ❄️ Folks, it’s Cold out there! I was at a full trot by the time I made it back to the door 😳 My dogs were even ready to come back in!

Scout and Ranger were both fully dressed, so I don’t think they got as cold as I did 😇 LOL!

Good News! My Water Garden is doing fine! My Koi have assumed the position “Hovering at the bottom” as usual this time of year… So, alls well with the Pond 😊They are just like me, waiting for Spring!

But, I still get a few calls every year when it gets ‘Really Cold’ outside, especially when you see some icing, and it’s almost always the same few questions, with #1 lately (today) being, “Will my Koi be ok in Cold like this’? First, let me say – What a considerate question! People LOVE their pets 😊 So, let me give you the good news… Yes! Your Koi will survive this cold snap and will be just fine!

Koi are cold blooded (Poikilothermic) fish, In the wintertime, their metabolism slows to a crawl. They can usually be found at the bottom of the pond, hovering, ie: treading water. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson,
Tennessee

There are a few things that you can do to help them through a cold snap! # 1 is – IF your Pond tries to freeze – Keep a hole open in the ice! This should be a preventative measure and hopefully not a reactionary one…

If you turn your ponds pump off in a bad freeze, use a floating heater/de-icer to maintain a hole in the ice to exchange gases/oxygen for your fish’s health and well being. You can purchase a floating pond heater at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio.

There are a LOT of articles on this BLOG that will help you with your Water Garden & Koi! But, to cover today’s question/concerns, Your Koi will be OK 👌🏻

Stay warm! Remember- Spring is Coming!

Hump Day Koi Story – Do you get “Seasonal Koi Seperation Anxiety”? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Question – Do you get “Seasonal Koi Seperation Anxiety”? I do… All Winter without feeding my babies is a test! I still get out to my pond daily mind you! But, no hand feeding, no aquatic plants, no turtles 🐢… It gets… Tough!

Seasonal Koi Seperation Anxiety is real! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Dreams of Late Winter/Early Spring keep me going… That’s when everything starts happening again. The plants are emerging, the water is warming & the Koi’s metabolism is waking up! Early season feeding starts Soon! In the mean time, a little hard work and cleaning are in order to prepare for the coming season! Will you be ready?

This is a true statement!😊 I love my Koi & I’m counting the days till it’s feeding time again!

Here’s to the coming season!
