It’s Christmas Eve 🎄🎅🏼❄️

I’m up early, getting ready for our annual family Christmas Eve Dinner 🥘 In just a few hours we will have about 20 house guests including at least 4 dogs 🐕 🤩 Christmas music, movies, pie 🥧… It’s always nice to spend time with your family ❤️

There is a little Magic on Christmas Eve

A Visit from St. Nicholas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap, 
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow 
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, 
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”

Sunday Reflection’s…

Aren’t internal clocks great 😊 I was up very late last night/this morning (1:30am), visiting, talking and picking up from our annual Moonlight Pond Tour. And even though I had planned to ‘sleep in’ my eyes 👀 popped open like clockwork at 5am and I was wide awake… My internal clock must be a Timex 😊

It was a perfect night for a Garden Tour! Thanks 🙏🏻 to everyone that came out and made this a success! ❤️

And by all other accounts, it was a great week!

  • I got to catch up with friends on the river
  • Successful Pond Tour fundraiser
  • The weather was great!
  • A great friend turned 50!

But the 1st thing I thought about when my eyes opened this morning was what happened on this day in 2001… 9/11

A Heavy blow was struck against all Americans that day.

• 2,977 Americans were Murdered!

• 343 Firefighters died saving others! Many that survived are dying from cancer now at an alarming rate! Thank a Firefighter today…

But – We survived! We united! We rebuilt! 🇺🇸

All these other good things that happened for me this week, and every week before, and every day after today has been possible because of the sacrifices of past generations of Americans! We stand up! We fight for the freedom of others! We rebuild when things get torn down! God Bless America 🇺🇸

Sunday Reflections…

I got up with the sun, fixed coffee, put on my garden shoes on the porch and haven’t been back inside yet… Again, short handed at the nursery and so many chores to do… even on the sabbath 🙏🏻 But I feel good with it, (see Luke 14), when Jesus demonstrates to the Pharisees that some emergencies must be dealt with immediately, even if it means breaking the sabbath to do so… Ox in the ditch… Or in our case, watering to keep plant stock alive… And to beautify the landscape❤️

At least I got my ”better half” helping! She’s the hardest working gal in show business! “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” ~ Proverbs 31:10

Even tho we are working 7 days a week right now, I know at the end of the day that I’m a very lucky and a very blessed man! 🙏🏻

Sunday Reflections…

Late nights slow down an early morning 😊 but this morning was perfect! A slow easy rain 🌧 was falling until around 8:30 and now it’s clear and cool. Perfect for the last big dust up of Summer ⛅️ Every year we talk about doing something different for Labor Day Weekend , but we always end up at the river 🚤

It all starts with a good breakfast 🍳

Sunday Reflections…

Last night was Cold 🥶 42 degrees with a brisk northerly wind 🌬 It sure didn’t feel like the official entry to Summer… But, this morning, the brilliant Sunrise helped mediate that feeling. Tomorrow is Memorial Day, a day to honor and remember all the men and women who gave all for this country. Maybe this unusual cold is a reminder of that? We were all huddled by the fire 🔥 last night. How many soldiers huddled by fires, dreaming of home, family and cool Summer nights that never returned… I can stand a cool night by a fire just fine when I think about that… God Bless America 🇺🇸

Sunrise is always a welcome thing 🌞

A soldier rides patrol,
Knowing not what may unfold.

He keeps watch as he rides

My parents taught us from childhood to pray for our family, our neighbors, and to pray for our country and it’s leaders. We all should! So I thought I would post this quote of a prayer by our 1st President, George Washington. This prayer is still read aloud at Mount Vernon. It was sent out to all the Governors of the new States. It’s still a relevant prayer today.

“I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have the United States in his holy protection, that he would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field, and finally, that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all, to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristicks of the Devine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation.  Amen

Veterans Day 🇺🇸 Thank You For Your Service!

Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, because November 11th. was the day they signed the Armistice that put an end to WWI. Back then it only honored those who died in war. But in 1954 the day became known as Veterans Day & now honors all who have served our country. So let’s all thank a veteran today! Without all their hard work & sacrifice, we wouldn’t have the privileges & freedoms that we enjoy today.

Will You Vote Tomorrow?

One of the biggest voices we have is our vote! I’ve voted 🗳 in every possible election over the years. I do think it’s important to exercise that personal right. Every time voting day rolls around I always think about a special place from Jackson’s past. A place that really helped me grow up… Buddies Place! Locals will know of what I speak. Cecil Maxwell was a big influence on me as a boy. And gave me one of my first jobs working at the Pool 🎱 Room as a teenager. Anyone who went up there back in tha day, remembers the stairs! And they probably remember the sign as you got to the top. It had a political statement that still rings true. It said “Your vote gives you the right to bitch! IF you don’t vote, don’t be bitching”! I still feel the same way 😎

One of the last of the old school Pool Rooms 🎱 The political discussions were awesome and very educational for a young man like myself. I learned a lot about living in that old Pool Hall…

No matter your political leanings, it’s very important to get out and exercise your right to Vote! And remember, if you don’t … Keep your opinions to yourself! You didn’t earn the right to bitch about the outcome 😎

I don’t know about you, but I’m voting to bring Buddies Place Back! Who’s with me?!
