Friday Radio Report – Freeze Frame! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Another GREAT show today with Dan & Sea Bass – The 180 Crew!

I’m on with the 180 Crew _ Dan Reaves & Sea Bass- every Friday from 10-11am with ALL your gardening and Outdoor Lifestyle questions – 731-423-8101. You can TEXT in too – 731-277-5155. Listen LIVE at 101.5 WNWS – FM.

Finally! We are into APRIL! The Azaleas and Dogwoods are ALL in bloom! SPRING TIME BABY!

Guess what the #1 topic of today’s show was? The DEEP FREEZE! That’s right folks, the weather is throwing us a curve ball! Tonight into the morning the tempurture will drop – 35-40 degrees and rain will turn to snow & sleet… WHAT! Sooooo, I have about 2,000 plants to move under plastic and LOTS of Landscape plants to cover and protect 🙂 That is my #1 message to you today as well. Get ready for the coming FREEZE!

  • Cover tender plants that have emerged with sheets, row covers, burlap, plastic, etc…
  • Bring those potted plants back in!
  • Water everything well too. It helps!
  • Unhook your water-hoses and Low-Volume Sprinklers!

Other than dealing with the freeze, we had some other questions –

  • What can I spray to kill clover and other weeds? I suggested a post-emergent like Round-Up or the like ( glyphosate).
  • What are good soil amendments to till into my new garden beds? Organics like, Chicken Poop, Mushroom Compost & Worm Castings are all good. I sometimes till in some course sand to aid in drainage too.
  • Can I still trim my Crape Myrtles? It’s getting late to trim them, so I recommend not to. BUT, If you just need to, they will probably come out, but no guarantees.
  • Oh, and the Masters is on ALL weekend! 🙂 YES!

Thanks for the calls and texts! Y’all ROCK!

Have a great weekend and stay warm out there,

Saturday Chore List… | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

What a BEAUTIFUL sunrise this morning! It rained a little last night but it was over before dawn and it feels GREAT outside 🙂

Up with the sun! It’s time to get out in the garden & embrace the Spring! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

If you haven’t already started on your chore list, Saturday is a great day to get started! Here’s a chore list pre-made –

  • Trim the shrubs & ornamental trees – holly’s, boxwoods, barberries, crepe myrtles, etc. (NOT azaleas yet)
  • Weeding! Flower beds, along edges, etc…
  • Clean-up! Rake and get up left over leaves, weeds etc…
  • Fertilize your shrubs – I use milorganite & espoma organic.
  • Fruit trees haven’t bloomed yet… Apply Dormant oil now if you haven’t already.
  • If you have a vegetable garden its a great time to till in some compost and manure to make ready!
  • Freshen up the look with mulch!
  • If you have a fescue lawn its time to aerate & overseed.
  • If you have a Water Garden – it’s time for a Spring clean-out!
  • It’s also a great time to power-wash sidewalks, driveways & patios.
  • Is your mower ready? Oil change? Sharpen blades? String trimmer ready to go?

In my experience, it’s good to be proactive when it comes to the Garden! You can fall behind so fast… Then it’s almost too much to handle! So I hope this very basic list of things to-do helps you get started for Spring 🙂

We have a full line of Garden Supplies, including Heirloom Seeds, Organic Fertilizers, Insect control, Dormant oil & more. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

At the end of a day working in the garden, I fire up the grill and ice down some drinks 🙂 Life is Good!

Have a GREAT weekend! & Happy Pondering!
