Keepin’ It Real – Top 5 Koi Myths Made Right! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

It’s Wednesday, aka “Hump Day” and as usual the subject is Koi 😊 We were discussing erroneous information & myths about Koi keeping that are out there, so I thought why not make a blog post about it… Here’s a quick “Top 5”…

#1 – You Can’t Be A Koi Keeper & A Water Gardener.

Not true! You can raise healthy koi In your beautiful water garden! The koi can grow up to be just as beautiful and healthy as they are in traditional koi ponds. Proper design is key! You will LOVE how they compliment each other 😊 I have installed Hundreds of beautiful Water Gardens with healthy happy Koi.

Koi and Water Gardens go together like peas and carrots 😊 | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

#2 – Predators Will Eat All Your Fish.

Again, Proper Design is key! Raccoons generally won’t swim. That’s not to say they never swim, or couldn’t stand on the side of your pond and take a paw swipe or two at your fish… Fortunately, most fish will swim to a deeper, more protected part of the pond when a predator is threatening them. The one predator with legitimate credentials is the blue heron. Plenty of lily pads give them some protection and will work to minimize attracting a heron in the first place. Other protection measures include a motion activated water sprayer called a “Scarecrow” or even better a “Koi-cave” structure that can be built in during the pond’s construction. IF you already have a pond, they can be added with minimum remodeling during a clean out service.

A Blue Heron is a major Predator of our Koi and pond fish! BUT, we can stop them from harming our ‘finned friends’! Tools like a “Scarecrow”, or a fish cave really help! In the Fall a leaf net helps with more than 1 task 😊

#3 – Your Pond Must Be (3) Three Feet Deep to Keep Koi.

There are literally tens of thousands of two-foot deep ponds all around this country, full of happy and healthy koi. The water in a two-foot deep pond will generally only freeze eight inches down in the coldest of climates, because of the insulating qualities of the earth that surrounds the pond – Here in West Tennessee usually not at all. Another Plus – a properly designed 2’ deep pond is easy to get in and out of 😉

#4 – Koi Can’t Be Kept With Plants.

In a naturally balanced ecosystem, koi and plants complement and need one another. In nature, fish feed on plants. As a result, the fish produce waste, which is broken down by aerobic bacteria on the bottom of your pond, which, in turn, is used as fertilizer by the plants to grow and produce more natural fish food. One tip I have learned from experience- start with small Koi, they will grow up with the plants and won’t bother them at all – like in nature.

This is one of my Display Water Gardens at Carters Nursery Pond & Patio – The Aquatic Plants & Koi have been doing great here for almost 30 years!

#5 – If You Forget To Feed Your Koi They Will All Die.

Totally False! In a properly designed & stocked pond, the ecological balance will amaze you! Crystal clear water, thriving aquatic plants & a healthy eco-system are your reward! We all Love to feed our babies, but if you miss a few days they will get busy doing some “pond keeping” of their own! 😊 They will ‘Thrive’, not simply survive! The key is  to “Stay in Balance”!

Happy Pondering! & Merry Christmas 🎄 🎅🏻

The Growing Popularity of Outdoor Living! Revisited! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I penned this one several years ago but it still gets read and brought up to me. This one was published in Tennessee Gardener & I have had many Master Gardeners bring the article to shows and events over the years. It’s still very relevant today so I wanted to re-blog it 😊 I don’t have all the original pictures that were published with the story anymore. Let me know what you think. It’s all about Ourdoor Living!

Outdoor Lifestyle Areas allow you to really enjoy the backyard. A Pond, Patio, grill and garden area to get comfy is the Ultimate! This is one of my Outdoor Room displays at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tn. 38305

Living The Life Abundant

I see more and more people staying home these days… myself included. Instead of taking that trip to Spain, France or even Disney World, more and more of us are staying local and putting our time and money into our Homes & BACKYARDS! This is a huge trend across the country and it has been growing by leaps and bounds since 9/11. The trend has a name too, they call it “Cocooning ”.

It makes good sense to me! Instead of spending your vacation running around the country, spending all the money you saved, just to get back home more exhausted than before you left; Why not put your time and money into your home and backyard and enjoy it year round with your family and friends… Watergarden’s, Koi Ponds, Swimming Pools, Backyard Patios and Decks, Outdoor Kitchens with Herb Gardens and Pottery overflowing with Vegetables and Flowers 🤗 Sound good? That sounds like the ‘Life Abundant’ to me !

Lakeside Living at its Best

One of my clients recently decided to sell his beautiful home and build a new home in a local, private lakeside development. After I saw the lot I was as excited as he and his wife were! Living on the water is a wonderful thing! I was asked to work up a ‘simple’ backyard plan that would include a swimming pool with natural stone waterfalls, a watergarden with aquatic plants and fish, a stone patio with lots of space and a fishing area down by the lake. In other words, a resort right there in their own backyard. “Cocooning 101 ”!

We went to work right away and developed a ‘Concept Design’ for the back yard. With only a few minor changes we were ready to get started creating their new ‘Back yard Resort’. It was a fairly large scale job and the actual work took approximately 1 month to complete. We used specimen quality stone and nice mature plant material on this project so the first full season for this landscape looked like it had been there for quite awhile. Let me tell you folks… It changed their lives for the good!

This is a Google Earth image of the project that this story was written about over 10 years ago. Complete with a huge stone patio, large Koi Pond bordering/between the upper patio & the Pool deck/patio. An in-ground pool with a beautiful waterfall and jump rock & gorgeous landscaping right on the side of the lake. | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, Tennessee

Just Do It

Whether you live on a lake or on any average city street, you too can create a Backyard Haven that you will love coming home to each and every day. It all starts with a basic Landscape Plan; Sit down with pen and paper and do a basic sketch, OR call me, I can help!  Include a place to sit within the garden, a deck or patio, be sure to include a Fountain or Watergarden, definitely  some beautiful Shrubs and Flowers, maybe some basic Vegetables and Herbs in the Landscape or in a container like Tomato’s or Basil and Cilantro. Before you know it, you will be eating dinner out there every night. Your Lifestyle will change for the better – and you my friends will be living the ‘Life Abundant’ !

Thanks & Merry Christmas! 🎄🎅🏻❤️

Good Morning! We are mere days from Christmas 🎄 🎅🏻 and I wanted to share something with you. I have been talking about the “Ultimate Christmas Gift” being a Custom Waterfall built for you at your home. Believe me, it’s a life changer! You literally start living out there! Cooking & eating, setting up furniture & music, etc., etc… Imagine a Zen fix everyday! It will change your life!

Working and spending time in my garden is my enjoyment, my Zen…

Here is the same Water Garden in Winter. No blooms, but still BEAUTIFUL! AND I still get my daily Zen and then some😊 |Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Check out this quick video I shot one night of my pond and outdoor kitchen area, you’ll see what I mean.

Sunday Reflections…

All these dark, wet days really limit what we can do outside. Add in the the fact that the days are steadily getting shorter and shorter & it kinda gets … depressing.

The Winter Solstice (December 21st) marks the shortest day of the year. Good News is – the day after, the days start getting LONGER again! THIS Friday is the Day! YES!

BUT, this morning was so beautiful! Beautiful sunrise & decent temps makes for a nice Sunday morning! I walked around the garden a bit and suddenly had so many ideas flowing through my mind! Changes & new things get me excited! These ideas and plans help get me through to Spring 😊 Now I’m sitting on the swing typing out this mornings BLOG post.

Take it from me – Beat the Winter blues! Get outside every chance you get… It’s the best medicine 😊

”From December to March, there are for many of us three gardens –                            The garden outdoors,                                       The garden of pots and bowls in the house,    And the garden of the mind’s eye.”

A few of my Favorite Christmas Songs

Music is a HUGE part of Christmas for me and my family! During the holidays there is almost always music playing around the house and around the office too😊

So my son and I started making our “Top 5 Favorite Christmas Music List” – NOT of all time – a current list of songs based off our own playlists… HaHa 😆- Here’s mine… Jacob, it’s your turn 🎅🏻

Jimmy B. is ALWAYS on my Christmas mix!

Everyone that loves Christmas music plays this one on the holidays, and EVERYONE has done this classic! This is my favorite artists version from way back!

Old Friends and Christmas Songs –

Yesterday would have been my friend Bill Ways 75th. birthday. We were both Sagittarians (Birthdays between – Nov. 22nd – Dec. 21st.) and I learned over time that we had much in common – Love of animals, the TN. River, old cars, and music were just a few! Bill was a ‘Music Aficionado” & could blow your mind with his vast knowledge of the music world! He not only knew obscure songs and artists, he knew about the history of the song in question, even down to who played the instruments on the studio tracks! He WOWED many a listener, ME included! This time of year he was heavily into playing Christmas songs, many that you never heard of… So, I want to play a Christmas song in Bills memory. This was one of his favorites and is now one of mine.

PS: Grab a tissue first, you might need it!

Merry Christmas Y’all! 🎅🏻

Hump Day Koi Story – “Koi No Taki-Nobori” | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Many people will tell you that most everything that’s worth anything, starts with a good story! I have found this to be very true across the board. A story that hooked me many years ago is an ancient one, but still packs a wallop today! It’s the story of the Dragon Koi’!

In this story the Koi is so strong and spirited that it can swim & fight its way up through the rapids & waterfalls to become the Dragon. The Koi is a symbol of power and success!

In this ancient story a large school of golden Koi are swimming upstream in the Yellow River in China. They make it all the way to the  raging waterfalls at the top, but all the fish but one is washed back down the flow. But, the one Koi is determined to make it! He spends 100 years trying & trying to make it up the waterfalls, until one day he finally does it. The gods recognized the Koi’s perseverance & determination and as a reward turned him into a Gold Dragon, the very image of strength & power!

“Koi no taki-nobori” means “Carps Climbing the Waterfalls”. Koi have been a revered animal in China and Japan for many, many years and today are here as well.
I hope you enjoyed this little ode to the Koi today 😊 Think of the Koi as a symbol of energy, power & courage. These traits help us to overcome difficulties in life. Just sitting by the pond and feeding your Koi can bring peace and happiness into your day.
Happy Pondering! Enjoy your Koi 😊
