Sunday Reflections…

Sundays are for family! So we were sitting around sipping coffee, talking favorite Sunday songs (non religious)… I’m sure everyone has one or two they can think of 😊 We always pick 1 each when we are talking movies or music and we came up with these 3. I bet you can guess which one was mine 😊

Have a great Sunday with friends and family!

This one is just plain silly :0 But kinda funny too… Guess who picked this one… 😜

A “New Guy” at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio is going to be a game changer! | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

This year has opened up several new doors for me. I have started Blogging daily, and this has been LOTS of fun AND LOTS of work too! But daily blogging has been a blessing for me & I really love it 🙂

PLUS, I have started playing with the idea of doing a video blog ie; a VLOG (Video Blog or Video Log). This has been a challenge! Even more time is involved in doing a quality Vlog! You have to research, write, shoot & edit, which adds up to = LOTS of work!

BUT, LUCKILY, I recently met a guy who makes this Vlogging thing look easy! He’s an expert with video! He’s a great writer and editor & he LOVES the Ponds and Water Features that I design and build! Sooo, I have decided to take him on as a “Consultant” for Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio.

His name is Carter Rockwell. Carter is from the UK, so it may take a little getting use to his accent, but I love it 🙂 Carter is going to help me get a handle on this Vlogging thing and do some underwater videos for me! Did I mention he’s also a professional diver and underwater videographer? WOW! In fact we have already put together a short video that I was really impressed with! So, without further ado, here’s Carter –

Hump Day Koi Fix | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

I LOVE KOI! I LOVE learning more about their colors and patterns and their Japanese names too. Over the last couple of months I have put several different types/varieties of Koi on this blog and explained the basics of their color combinations and classifications, etc. Today I thought I would spotlight a very special and beautiful variety of Koi called the ‘Kin Kikokuryu’.

The Kin Kikokuryu combnes orange (Orenji) or yellow(Ki) with the black and white patterns of the Kikokuryu, to become the NEWEST variety of Koi in the Koi Industry!

What a BEAUTIFUL Koi! These were developed from the Karasugoi. It took many years of selective breeding to develop these Koi. Through the process, several varieties were used – Magoi, Karasugoi, Hajiro, Doitsu, Kumonryu & Kikokuryu were all selectively breed to finally develop the ‘Kin Kikokuryu’! LOTS of time, know how and hard work has gone into this skilled husbandry/breeding practice!

Kikokuryu literally means “Shining black dragon”. Kin means Gold (metallic) – So Kin Kikokuryu means “Gold Metallic Shining Black Dragon”… Pretty cool!

There are actually 6 different sub groups of the Kin Kikokuryu, way to much info for me to try to cover in this short blog, but enough to let you know that Koi Breeding is a serious, very technical business! Hats off to the breeder who created the Kin Kikokuryu –  Mr. Seiki Igarashi!

I hope this “Koi Fix” hit the spot! 🙂 Have a GREAT Hump Day!

… & Happy Pondering!

Can a Water Garden Change Your Life? | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

Can a Water Garden Change Your Life?

Simple answer – YES!

I always start the day with a cup of tea & the news out by my Pond. Not the newspaper of course – my news apps on my iPhone or iPad.. Not so “Old School” but very cool 😊What was the first thing I saw this morning? A GREAT reminder of how Ponds do change peoples lives!

We did a special project for a local school many years ago – we built them a “Teaching Pond” through a program called “Ponds for Kids”. I took this picture of an entire science class that came to my Nursery to Tour the Ponds and Water Features. These kids are nature lovers & Pond Lovers!

Over the years it has been great to watch all the different kids that grew up with this living classroom. I think every kid in this country would benefit from a chance to have an education like this! They learn about ecology & Biology up close and personal! On a scale that is interesting and engaging. I’m still excitied about this project and what it has done to help a younger generation appreciate and learn more about science and nature.

Cyprinus rubofscous – (The fish the modern day Koi was bred from).
These kids have learned about Pond Fish, frogs, turtles, tadpoles, dragonflies, Aquatic Plants & so much more.

So again, I say Yes, something as simple as a beautiful Water Garden in your backyard can change your life for the better. A teaching Pond in your kids school can change a whole generations view of the world too…

Come by the nursery Thursday evening at 6:30 & I will open your eyes to the possibilities. 😊

We always have FUN at our ‘Evenings by the Pond’ events! Come see what Outdoor living is all about. This Thursday evening at Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio. Call for more information 731-424-2206

Happy Pondering!

Monday Morning Moment of Zen | Carters Nursery, Pond & Patio | Jackson, TN

This is a beautiful waterfall & Pond. I shot this from an upper terrace across the pond focusing on the furthest waterfalls. Then it brings you back across the water and up a flowing stream to the stream head. I hope it gives you a feeling of Zen on this beautiful Monday Morning. 😊
